any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth”.
Deuteronomy 6:4 says “Hear O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord”.
Ahab disregarded the Word of the Lord and caused Israel to disobey God and pervert themselves and worship Baal. He is the worst king to ever rule Israel.
THE WORSHIP OF BAAL: - was very perverted. The worship ceremonies consisted of orgies and human sacrifices. Often times in these groves the trees had carving in them of so-called gods (totems). The people would have these orgies as a form of worship. Also because of these orgies that happened as a part of their perverted worship there would be a lot of unwanted pregnancies. These children that were born from these worship practices were offered up as human sacrifices to Baal. This is totally against God in a number of ways.
Also understand and this is VERY IMPORTANT:- that Baal was believed to be the sun god and he controlled the weather as well as the god of fertility. So they people believed that when they heard thunder that Baal was speaking to them and letting them know that he was going to bless them. The rain that fell was believed to be the blessing that Baal was sending on them, this rain was the blessing of fertility so many orgies and sexual escapades were done in the rain. So remember the rain was considered the blessings form Baal.
WATCH THIS:- God needs to get the attention of the people to get them to stop worshipping idols and turn to Him. So he going to start at the head and challenge the theory of Baal.
So He chooses a man by the name of Elijah from the town of Tishbi in Gilead.
The name Elijah is a very unique name. El = God, Jah = from the name God is called in covenant Jehovah. The letter I is in the middle indicating that I am wrapped up in God. His name begins with God and ends with God. God said I am the first and the last, the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega.
Elijah means = Jehovah is my salvation.
The name Tishbi or Tishbite means = stranger. You and I are strangers passing through this barren land.
Elijah is God’s mouthpiece; he is God’s spokesman for such a time as this. God sends him to Ahab the King of Israel.
Here is Elijah a nobody at this time. He wasn’t known for the miracle God did through him. He was a stranger to Ahab, but God was about to use him because he had a relationship with God. God sends Elijah to Ahab to set forth the challenge between God and Baal.
Verse #1 Elijah comes to Ahab and says “[As] the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word’. That is a powerful statement because the people believed the rain was a blessing from Baal, God said through Elijah I’m gonna stop what you thought was a blessing from some idol and show you just who I Am, so you can realize just where your blessings come from.
Verse #2 After Elijah proclaims that it will not rain again until he gives the word from God the Bible says “And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that [is] before Jordan”. This is Elijah’s instructions.
Ω - Understand that Elijah was a stranger and all of the sudden he was placed in front of the king, made a proclamation
