(14)

Sermon shared by Herman Abrahams

November 2009
Summary: Format for doing a funeral service. A sample Service Programme is provided together with suggested scripture readings, sayings and the committal at the cemetery or for cremation.
Denomination: Charismatic
Audience: General adults
Let us join together in saying the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory
for ever and ever. Amen.

5. AT THE GRAVESIDE
------------------------

The minister and undertaker lead the procession from the hearse to the grave.

Hymn: The minister may decide on singing a full hymn or selected verses. .

THE COMMITTAL

In the midst of life we are in death;
of whom may we seek for succor,
but of thee, O Lord.
Who for our sins art justly displeased?

Yet, O Lord God most holy, O Lord most mighty,
O holy and most merciful Savior,
deliver us not into the bitter pains of eternal death.

Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts;
shut not thy merciful ears to our prayer;
but spare us, Lord most holy, O God most mighty,
O holy and merciful Savior,
thou most worthy Judge eternal.
Suffer us not, at our last hour,
through any pains of death, to fall from thee.

OR THIS ...

All that the Father giveth me shall come to me;
and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

He that raised up Jesus from the dead
will also give life to our mortal bodies,
by his Spirit that dwelleth in us.

Wherefore my heart is glad, and my spirit rejoiceth;
my flesh also shall rest in hope.

Thou shalt show me the path of life;
in thy presence is the fullness of joy,
and at thy right hand there is pleasure for evermore.

THEN, WHILE THE EARTH IS CAST UPON THE COFFIN (OR LEAVE THE CHURCH TO BE
------------------------------------------------------------------------
CREMATED), the Minister says these words:
-----------------------------------------------
“Forasmuch as it has pleased our Heavenly Father, of His great Mercy, to take unto Himself our beloved brother / sister “(................................................)”, we therefore commit his/her body to be buried (cremated), earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust, in sure and certain hope of the Resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, Who shall change our servile body that it may be like unto His glorious Body, according to His mighty working, whereby He is able to subdue all things unto Himself.”

“I heard a voice from heaven, saying unto me, write, from henceforth blessed are the dead which die in the Lord: even so says the Spirit, for they rest from their labours.” [Rev 14:13].

The following verse may also be quoted:
---------------------------------------------
Heb 13:20-21 20 May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, 21 equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
