Text: Matthew 13:45-46 (King James Version)

"Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: (v. 46) who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it."

Topic: Pearl Of Great Price!

Jesus, the Christ, taught about a pearl - a pearl that any reasonable person would do right and well to take - to sell everything that he or she had to buy - a pearl of surpassing value! People cannot eat pearls, therefore the "Pearl of Great Price" had to be more vital than food since Jesus, the Christ, depicted it as more important than life itself!

Each and every one of us - for the most part - look for the easy way of doing almost everything; however, unless our sense of values is awry, we are not crazy enough to believe that there is any easy way to get something of such value as a pearl! Our sense of values, however, are - in point of fact - awry! That is why we who expect to pay well for expensive clothing - for fine homes - for luxury cars - or, even, in some cases, for personal planes - somehow or other expect Heaven to be thrust upon us; and, virtue to come easily to us! But, my brothers and sisters, Jesus, the Christ, proclaimed the high cost involved in the possession of the Kingdom of Heaven - which is the pearl!

If we wish to be with Him, we must leave our mothers and fathers; and, if need be, to turn our backs on our families and homes in order to follow Him! Those seem like strange Words; however, they must be taken in the context of One who loved us even unto death - One who left Heaven itself to prove His Love! Thus, His Words are unreasonable only to those who do not understand that if we must leave our fathers and mothers; and, cleave to our spouses for earthly happiness, we must be able to leave all - even ourselves - and, cleave to Jesus, the Christ, for the unsurpassable happiness of Heaven!

Tell me, "Does this seem cruel? Is it too much to ask?" Perhaps so; but, it is the only way a person can develop a true sense of values! And, my brothers and sisters, it is only when we have this kind of attitude, that we can be of real value to those that we love! Know that when we are in Christ Jesus; and, He is in us, nothing can compel us to do anything which is not for our greatest good - for we would rather die than to hurt or harm anyone!

Since the "pearl" is to be valued or preferred before all else in life; and, even life itself, we each must die alone and individually make an accounting before Almighty God of our lives - how we lived them - and, what we did with His only begotten Son, Jesus, the Christ! Know that nobody can do this for us - nobody can stand in for us - not our parents - not our siblings - not our pastors - not our friends! In order to have Eternal Life, we must lose our lives - however, if the "here and now" means everything to us,
