Jesus Christ our Passover Lamb

Introduction: The descendents of Jacob came to Egypt and settled in Goshen. The new king put them into slavery and now they were persecuted and troubled. They were in great difficulty. Exodus 1:11-14 11 So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites 13 and worked them ruthlessly. 14 They made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their hard labor the Egyptians used them ruthlessly. God heard their cry. Exodus 3:7 7 The LORD said, "I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. God said he is going to make a distinction between the Egyptians and the children of Israel. Our God is a God who makes distinction. He makes a distinction between His people and the people of the world. In the Bible we find God making distinction between the children of Israel and the Egyptians. Exodus 11:7 7 But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any man or animal.’ Then you will know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.

God designed the Passover for this distinction.

Passover (Exodus 12:1-30)

The word Passover means to spread wings over, to spare, to preserve, to protect etc. Read Exodus 12:1-30

God spared the blood on the first Passover day.

The result of the first Passover.

1. The Egyptians beg the Israelites to leave. Exodus 12:33

2. The Israelites leave Egypt plundered. Exodus 12:35-36

Now, Jesus Christ is referred as our Passover lamb. 1 Corinthians 5:7. There is a great similarity between the first Passover lamb and the death Jesus Christ on the cross for us. Let us see the similarities.

Christ our Passover

1. Lamb must be a male in the prime of his life. Exodus 12:5.

When Jesus began his ministry he was in the prime of His life. Luke 3:23.

2. The lamb had to be without blemish. Exodus 12:5

Jesus Christ is portrayed as the perfect Lamb of God. 1 Peter 1:18-19. Look at the testimony of God the father for the baptism of Jesus. Luke 3:21-22.

3. The lamb must be kept under scrutiny. Exodus 12:6

Jesus Christ was scrutinized for 3-1/2 years by the scribes, satan, Pharisees, people, and the Roman government.

4. The Lamb must be slain. Exodus 12:6

Jesus Christ was crucified for the sins of the mankind.

Conclusion: Jesus Christ is our Passover lamb. Jesus stood at the place of every sinner. Thousands of lambs were slain in the first Passover night but it is interesting that throughout Exodus 12 singular is used for referring to the lamb. There was only one lamb in the mind of God that night, the Lamb of God at Calvary, Jesus Christ. Amen!
