Intentional Leadership

DAVID

Four objectives are:

1. That we would each grow closer to God.

2. That we would grow closer in our marriages.

3. Get to know each other in a closer way, so we can encourage, bless, minister and challenge each other.

4. That we would all take at least the first step in being an intentional leader.

Let take time to set one goal for each of the four. (See goal setting)

PHYLLIS

Introduction

(Take a piece a string Lead or push)

We all lead someone.

Our children, someone at work, our pets

Tell story of Kayla and Hayley.

We also lead by example

Whether we like it or not we lead by example especially your own children. We are having fun with Garrett right now. He does what ever we do, it’s so cool... And sometimes not so cool!

It should teach us something.

I want to let you know people and someone is watching you at home at work at play etc. and more so if you have any kind of title of leadership. (Show pictures of Larry boy)((We have found that you will be surprised at who is watching you. Also if you are a leader of God’s choice even if you do not know it or are not leading other people notice it and follow you.)

We all have had heroes

We need them.

You are a hero right now to some one.

Our country is failing because we have not a passion for good

Character of life. But on getting more or doing more.

(We end up people pleasers instead of God pleasers)

People will follow no matter what. People are generally followers.

The bible says without a vision or without leadership the people perish.

Do you remember this Dennis Rodman the basketball star Do you want Dennis Rodman as the hero for your children? Just look at the average teen-ager’s bedroom - who are their heroes?

This should give you a passion for leadership.

The challenge is, will you stand up and be that hero?

You too can be superman - well at least super mom or super dad. Or a super example to others.

DAVID

The main goal of leadership is to help people grow close to GOD!!

Who would not want it?

And you have that privilege. I want you to have it. I see so much potential in each of you. Leaders, not just of your family or a little church, but strong leaders - movers and shakers in our city, in our province, our country ---- who knows where it could go?

Eg. David’s adoptive daughter and the honey tree tying bee honey jars to a tree.

The good news is that you can be intentional about your leadership

Leadership is not so much a commitment, not just doing things – but an understanding -- a revelation --- just being that leader the understanding that yours and my leadership needs to be intentional.

We need to pray God will give us a passion for leadership.

We need to change the way we think - get a leaders mentality.

Do you know?

- you can do all things through CHRIST who strengths you

- That you are fearfully and wonderfully made

- If the words of your mouth and the meditations of your heart are they pleasing unto God.

- If you think on the good things.

Look what you are doing now:

- Will it build character in you?

- Will it inspire others?

Who are you when no one is watching?

Leadership model:

1. You do it

2. You do it with someone watching

3. You watch they do it

4. Let them do it

5. Send them out to do it

Then it starts all over again.

That’s what Phyllis and I been doing. Now it’s time for most of you to be to be at the 4 stage - doing it.

PHYLLIS

Leadership is lifelong you will learn and go on. Remember it’s a call.

L.e.a.d.e.r. - let’s spell it

Lead using the 5 fold model

Encourage the Involvement of as many people as possible.

Act you do it first

- start it do something GO – remember the string

Determine to go on - There will be troubles –

- (there will be some who speak against you - say you are special - etc etc )

Earn respect of the people by being. Not only doing.

- They said about Jesus he is not like the Pharisees of the day

Recruit others.

- The Paul timothy principal.

What is intentional?

It’s recognising that we are leaders - you have been chosen:

1Pe 1:2 who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ an

Eph 1:11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,

It’s accepting it.

Accepting could be the hardest part. Many run from it but it is such a special privilege. It’s so wonderful - you as a leader can influence others to change, to grow, to be better people, to learn. It’s almost endless how much you can influence people.

Every one has some kind of dream but it’s the great leaders who started with a dream and then did something about it.

DAVID

In God he has chosen you to be a leader---- he gives a warning:

Jas 3:1 ¶ Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.

This is because as a leader you can and do affect people - you can and do influence them for the good or the bad. You can and do Help them- or not.

Others dream about saving the world. Others think about how it would be if they were in charge. Talk is cheap - most do not even listen to them.

Other complains and tells everyone what is wrong. Have you noticed with them nothing changes even in their lives?

But as leaders you have the power and authority to change the way things are.

Accepting it lets all of God’s greatness now play a part in your life. He is just waiting for you to say yes. Most of us do not do it because we know its work. Somehow we know it costs —

Do you know what, it does cost and plenty — but one the rewards are Jesus saying Mt 25:21 “His master replied, `Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

It’s growing in our leadership. Just getting down and doing it.

Getting better and better equipped. It’s becoming supernaturally natural at it. If you start small more will come.

It’s working on our character

It’s the most important. Not by talking about it.

It’s recruiting others.

This is the true test of your leadership that others not only follow but they become leaders themselves. If you study discipleship then you will know the meaning is to help make others Christ like.

If you can pray all of the above then passion will come. All of this has to be bathed in prayer.

Pray for passion. Pray you will be the best leader you can be. Pray through each one of these.

PHYLLIS

Now that you are going to be intentional about leadership

Here are a few exciting things.

1. We are not all going to be the same leaders. Just as each of is different so will your leadership will be. What you need to do is lead.

Heb 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

You are going to be accountable not so much to Phyllis or me but to GOD. And you can be assured if he called you he will also equip you.

I. Leadership is a call.

Not just something we do or someone has to do because no-one else will do it. Nor is it a position. That’s the way the world looks at it.

What is a call?

1. Some may feel called.

2. Some may not feel called, but life circumstances show them that they are.

a. People follow them.

b. They end up leading because no one else does.

c. You just function in leadership. People always look to you for leadership.

3. A call is something God does. He calls in many ways.

Moses and the burning bush

Abraham

Jacob

Jesus

The apostles

The new apostle in Acts

Timothy

The Leaders in the church appointing because they have recognized they are leaders.

Prophecy

God leading though scripture

The difference is God is involved in the call. And he does it his way.

When God calls it is sure.

DAVID

I used to teach leadership to business people (a group with a paper on the floor and leave for a minute.)

II. How do you know you’re called?

1. God has spoken to you.

A. Through the word.

b. through prayer.

c. The counsel of others.

d. You have been trained for it.

e. You just know.

2. What to do about it. You can do different things.

1. Accept it and follow God as he unfolds it

2. Be a reluctant leader

A. out of felt need

b. you’re pushed into it.

3. Be gung ho and you push it and get into trouble. (Timing)

3. Getting started:

Asking God for a passion for leading — entering the race.

1Co 9:24 ¶ Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

Don’t get side tracked by – others, things of the world, discouragement:

Ga 5:7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?

Heb 12:1 ¶ Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Finish the race even to the end.

Ac 20:24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.

Then we can be as Paul and say:

2Ti 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

Goal Setting:

A goal has a beginning and an end. It is also measurable.

A goal: For the month of may I will tell my wife “I LOVE YOU” each

day.

Not a goal: My wife should know I love her and when I stop loving her I will tell her (just joking)

Not a goal: I will start to tell my wife I love her
