John 14:15-18 “15. If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17. Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.”

INTRODUCTION: (Personal testimony of harsh conditions during boot camp in Ft Leonard Wood Missouri, in which the government issued wool blanket used during bivouac was not sufficient to bring “comfort” while trying to sleep in a little pup tent with temperatures in the teens and snow and ice falling. Something much bigger was needed.)

. The Cold Comfort of Substance Abuse

Drugs to “Free the Mind”

Alcohol

Ephesians 5:18 “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;”

The Comfort of Substance Abuse just won’t do!

. The Cold Comfort of Sexual Immorality

Looking for Intimacy

Looking for Acceptance

Desiring to be Loved

Samaritan Woman of John 4

The Comfort of Sexual Immorality just won’t do!

. The Cold Comfort of Worldly Gain

Money can buy Anything, (almost)

Everyone has a Price

Looking for Control

Rich Man of Luke 12

The Comfort of Riches and Worldly Gain just won’t do!

. The Warm Comfort of Jesus Christ

2 Corinthians 1:3-7

Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you!

Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world! 1 John 4:4

With Jesus, we are enabled to comfort others with His comfort!

Conclusion: The world offers much in the way of “comfort” for the hurting soul. Satan has his devices and loves to entice those who are in a weakened state because of grief, or suffering with the promise of a quick and easy escape from the pain, but it’s all just shabby, moth-eaten, filthy rags. Jesus is the only King-Sized Comforter. He is the only one able to bring about true consolation, true peace, and true comfort. (Invitation)
