Summary: 5 of 6. Peter revealed that a false liberty had been presented to the Church. The true Church yields to true liberty, but Why? We will examine 9 stipulations of true Liberty(God’s liberty)....

The PROMISE Of LIBERTY-V—2Peter 2:17-22

Attention:

Freedom?

The Fourth of July was coming up, & the nursery school teacher took the opportunity to tell her class about patriotism.

"We live in a great country," she said.

"One of the things we should be happy is that, in this country, we are all free."

One little boy came walking up to her from the back of the room.

Standing with his hands on his hips, he said, "I'm not free. I'm four."

You may be something other than free!

There are many purveyors of false ‘truth’ who are infecting & effecting our great country’s government. In fact, because we are not a ‘Christian nation’ per se, but are rather a ‘Christian influenced’ nation,

The politicos promise happiness, prosperity, peace, freedom, wellness, care, etc. within a background of the church...BUT is their’s True(real/actual) Liberty/Freedom?

We must ask ourselves a question in all seriousness...

Is Liberty/Freedom a reality for you?

Peter revealed that a false liberty had been presented to the Church.

The true Church yields to true liberty.

But panderers of false Liberty/Freedom can mislead the Church.

Why must the Church yield to God’s liberty?

9 distinctions/functions/invitations/stipulations of true Liberty...God’s liberty.

We have found previously that...

True Liberty...God’s Liberty stipulates/assumes...

1. A QUENCHED THIRST(:17a)“wells without water”

2. ETERNAL LIGHT(:17b)“blackness of darkness forever”

3. HUMILITY(:18a)“great swelling words”

4. FULLNESS(:18b)“emptiness”

5. OTHER-WORLDLY ENTICEMENT(:18c) “allure”

6. A RESTRICTED SATISFACTION(:18d) “thru lusts of the flesh” “lewdness”

7—True liberty stipulates...

A RELIABLE PROMISE/Promise’s Liability(:19a)

Explanation:(:19)“promise them liberty”

:19—“While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.”

Their mantra may have been similar to our excuses, ‘I can do whatever I want!’ or ‘It’s legal so it’s okay!’ Such as these thrive on the coattails of majority opinion, crafting a salve of self-made morality(:18).

This is where the Church’s influence is brought into play. The true Church can & does positively influence the morality of the land. If it can not, it is because it is artificially silenced thru the authority of a secular culture made nervous at the prospect of accountability for personal sin.

Isa. 55:11—“So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”

And remember, ‘the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Good News.’

The Holy Spirit tells the Christian:

1Cor. 6:12—“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”

**We must ask ourselves, “What is this promise based upon?”...& “Is that foundation trustworthy?”

JESUS’ PROMISE:

Lk. 4:16-21—“So He[Jesus] came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, & stood up to read. And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” Then He closed the book, & gave it back to the attendant & sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

“In...the Old Testament, there are several dozen major prophecies about the coming of the Messiah, who would be sent by God to redeem His people. In effect, these predictions formed a figurative fingerprint that only the Anointed One would be able to match. This way, the Israelites could rule out any imposters & validate the credentials of the authentic Messiah.”.....“the probability of just eight prophecies being fulfilled[in one person] is one chance in one hundred million billion. that number is millions of times greater than the total number of people who’ve ever walked the planet.”.....“the probability of fulfilling forty-eight prophecies is one in a trillion”--13X over!—Lee Strobel & Louis Lapides in ‘The Case For Christ.’

*If anyone promises you a ‘liberty’ that is not soundly centered & based in Christ Jesus then that person is a liar or those people are liars! Such ‘promised liberty’ is all borne of the lie that the devil proffers—That we don’t need God’s solution(Jesus’ payment for our sins)...We only need a common, nondescript, subjective spirituality & religious feel-goodness.

“Promise”—epaggellw—Verb—1) To announce that one is about to do or furnish something—1a) To promise(of one's own accord) to engage voluntarily; 2) To profess—2a) An art, to profess one's skill in something. From—epi—1) Upon, on, at, by, before; 2) of position--On, at, by, over, against; 3) To, over, on, at, across, against. Strong—properly, meaning superimposition(of time, place, order, etc.), as a relation of distribution[with the genitive case], i.e. Over, upon, etc.; of rest(with the det.)--At, on, etc.; of direction(with the accusative case)--Towards, upon, etc.—&—aggelov—A messenger; especially--An "angel"; by implication--A pastor.

“Liberty/Freedom”—eleuyeria—Noun Fem.—1) Liberty to do or to omit things having no relationship to salvation; 2) Fancied liberty—2a) License, the liberty to do as one pleases; 3) True liberty is living as we should not as we please. Strong—Freedom(legitimate or licentious, chiefly moral or ceremonial). Used 11X.

*From the alternate of—ercomai—To come or go(in a great variety of applications, literally & figuratively).

Argumentation:

What sort of integrity governs the promise-ers?

**1Cor. 14:26-33—“How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, & let one interpret. But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, & let him speak to himself & to God. Let two or three prophets speak, & let the others judge. But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn & all may be encouraged. And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.”

Accountability maintained.

Jn. 8:31-59—“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, & the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, & have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will be made free’?” Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you. I speak what I have seen with My Father, & you do what you have seen with your father.” They answered & said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this. You do the deeds of your father.” Then they said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father--God.” Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth & came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, & the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, & does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar & the father of it. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.” Then the Jews answered & said to Him, “Do we not say rightly that You are a Samaritan & have a demon?” Jesus answered, “I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, & you dishonor Me. And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks & judges. Most assuredly, I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.” Then the Jews said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, & the prophets; & You say, ‘If anyone keeps My word he shall never taste death.’ “Are You greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? And the prophets are dead. Whom do You make Yourself out to be?” Jesus answered, “If I honor Myself, My honor is nothing. It is My Father who honors Me, of whom you say that He is your God. Yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be a liar like you; but I do know Him & keep His word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, & he saw it & was glad.” Then the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, & have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.” Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself & went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, & so passed by.”

**2Pet. 3:1-13—“Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, & of the commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord & Savior, knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, & saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, & the earth standing out of water & in the water, by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. But the heavens & the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment & perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, & a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, & the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth & the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct & godliness, looking for & hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, & the elements will melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens & a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”

But you must trust Him. You must trust His promise because a promise is only as good as the promise-er!...And He is Almighty God!

**Heb. 11:6—“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, & that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”

Acts 1:1-5—“The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do & teach, until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days & speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; “for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

**Rom. 4:9, 16-22—“Does this blessedness then come upon the circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness.”.....“Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all (as it is written, “I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed--God, who gives life to the dead & calls those things which do not exist as though they did; who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, “So shall your descendants be.” And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), & the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, & being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

**2Cor. 1:15-24—“And in this confidence I intended to come to you before, that you might have a second benefit-- to pass by way of you to Macedonia, to come again from Macedonia to you, & be helped by you on my way to Judea. Therefore, when I was planning this, did I do it lightly? Or the things I plan, do I plan according to the flesh, that with me there should be Yes, Yes, & No, No? But as God is faithful, our word to you was not Yes & No. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us--by me, Silvanus, & Timothy--was not Yes & No, but in Him was Yes. For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, & in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. Now He who establishes us with you in Christ & has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us & given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. Moreover I call God as witness against my soul, that to spare you I came no more to Corinth. Not that we have dominion over your faith, but are fellow workers for your joy; for by faith you stand.”

Gal. 4:31--5:9—“So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free. Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, & do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Indeed I, Paul, say to you that if you become circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing. And I testify again to every man who becomes circumcised that he is a debtor to keep the whole law. You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. You ran well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? This persuasion does not come from Him who calls you. A little leaven leavens the whole lump.”

A TELLING ENSLAVEMENT(:19b)

Explanation:(:19b)“slaves of corruption,” “overcome” & “brought into bondage”

:19—“While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.”

“...they themselves are slaves of corruption;...”

Ironically, these very heretics who “promise” the church “liberty,” though an aberrant one, are themselves enslaved to moral degradation(“corruption”) & thereby, utter shipwreck & failure(1Tim. 1:18-20).

They are slaves of majority opinion riding on the coattails of majority opinion, crafting a salve of self-made morality(:18).

However the Holy Spirit tells the Christian:

1Cor. 6:12—“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.”

“They Themselves”—autov—Pronoun—1) Himself, herself, themselves, itself; 2) He, she, it; 3) The same. Strong—from the particle au[perhaps akin to the base of ahr[air] through the idea of a baffling wind]--Backward; the reflexive pronoun--Self, used(alone or in the comparative eautou) of the third person , & (with the proper personal pronoun)of the other persons.

“Slaves”—doulov—Noun Nominative Plural Masc.—1) A slave, bondman, man of servile condition—1a) A slave, 1b) metaph.--One who gives himself up to another's will those whose service is used by Christ in extending & advancing his cause among men, 1c) Devoted to another to the disregard of one's own interests; 2) A servant, attendant. Doulov is the usual word for slave, one who is permanently in servitude, in subjection to a master. Strong—A slave(literal or figurative, involuntary or voluntary; frequently, therefore in a qualified sense of subjection or subserviency).

“Corruption/Depravity”—fyora—Noun Fem.—1) Corruption, destruction, perishing—1a) That which is subject to corruption, what is perishable, 1b) in the Christian sense--Eternal misery in hell; 2) in the NT, in an ethical sense--Corruption i.e. Moral decay. Strong—Decay, i.e. Ruin(spontaneous or inflicted, literally or figuratively). Used 9X.

“...for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.”

Peter brings a truism(adage) to the forefront as proof of the false prophet’s & teacher’s own internal deception. Simultaneously it is a direct condemnation of the false teachers as well as an exhortation for those of the church who fall under the spell of the singular charm of such professors.

This truism is applicable across all time, for all ages, people groups, & all individuals. The result being, that if we allow ourselves to be “overcome” by anything or anyone other than Christ Jesus, we have willingly placed ourselves “in bondage” to that one(their doctrine, belief system, worldly & flesh-driven directives, etc.) by which we are “overcome.” Our “bondage” is a personally chosen allowance of bondage! We willingly ‘invite’ the shackles placed upon our hands & feet.

The heavy implication is that we must ‘allow’ ourselves to be “overcome” by God Himself, & that in so doing, we will be brought into absolute “bondage” to Him & His Kingdom!

“By whom”—ov, h , o—Pronoun—1) Who, which, what, that. Strong—the relatively (sometimes demonstrative)pronoun--Who, which, what, that.

“Overcome/Defeated”(See :20)—httaw—Perfect Middle/Passive Deponent Indicative 3rd Sing.—1) To make less, inferior, to overcome—1a) To be made inferior, 1b) To overcome, worsted, to be conquered by one, forced to yield to one, 1c) To hold a thing inferior, set below. Strong—To make worse, i.e. Vanquish (literally or figuratively); by implication--To rate lower. Used 3X.

“Brought into Bondage/Enslaved/Mastered”—doulow—Noun Masc.—1) To make a slave of, reduce to bondage; 2) metaph.--Give myself wholly to one's needs & service, make myself a bondman to him. Doulow represents the servant in servile relation to a person. Strong—To enslave(literally or figuratively). Used 8X.

Argumentation:

Deut. 28:63-68—[To Israel when they disregard the LORD]“And it shall be, that just as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good & multiply you, so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you & bring you to nothing; & you shall be plucked from off the land which you go to possess. Then the LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, & there you shall serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known--wood & stone. “And among those nations you shall find no rest, nor shall the sole of your foot have a resting place; but there the LORD will give you a trembling heart, failing eyes, & anguish of soul. Your life shall hang in doubt before you; you shall fear day & night, & have no assurance of life. In the morning you shall say, ‘Oh, that it were evening!’ And at evening you shall say, ‘Oh, that it were morning!’ because of the fear which terrifies your heart, & because of the sight which your eyes see. And the LORD will take you back to Egypt in ships, by the way of which I said to you, ‘You shall never see it again.’ And there you shall be offered for sale to your enemies as male & female slaves, but no one will buy you.”

Though this description regards Israel in disobedience to YaHWeH God, there are striking similarities which the disobedient face personally.

1Cor. 7:17-23—“But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one, so let him walk. And so I ordain in all the churches. Was anyone called while circumcised? Let him not become uncircumcised. Was anyone called while uncircumcised? Let him not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing & uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God is what matters. Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called. Were you called while a slave? Do not be concerned about it; but if you can be made free, rather use it. For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who is called while free is Christ’s slave. You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.”

**Mat. 11:28-30—“Come to Me[Jesus], all you who labor & are heavy laden, & I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you & learn from Me, for I am gentle & lowly in heart, & you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy & My burden is light.”

**Jn. 8:31-36—“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

**Rom. 16:17-19—“Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, & your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace. What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that *to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey*, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, & of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, & having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, & the end, everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
