IMPLICATIONS From JESUS’ BURIAL & RESURRECTION-II—Luke 23:50--24:12

Need:

The death, burial & resurrection of Jesus is historical fact.

Trust in those facts is a key factor in a person’s being ‘born-again’. Trust in those facts is key to a Christian’s relationship with the family of God.

So, Luke lays out the historicity of Jesus’ burial & resurrection.

Jesus was dead, buried, & resurrected.

What details surround Jesus’ burial & resurrection?

14 implications from the details surrounding Jesus’ burial & resurrection.

Last week we found that, Personal Implications from Jesus’ burial & resurrection tell us that, God’s People Can...

1. MAN STRATEGIC PLACES(in God’s Plan)(23:50-52)Joseph of Arimathea.

2. RESTORE DIGNITY(23:53)Joseph’s borrowed tomb.

3. PRIORITIZE GOD’s TIME RESTRAINTS(23:54)Preparation Day.

4. LOVINGLY, SUPPORT GOD’s WORK(23:55)The women ministered & followed the burial closely.

5. RESPECT GOD’s WILL(23:56)The women rested on the Sabbath.

Today we will discover that:

6—An Implication from Jesus’ burial & resurrection is that God’s People Can...

FOLLOW THRU(24:1)

Explanation:(24:1)

24:1—“Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, & certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.”

“Now on the first day of the week”—Sunday

“Very early in the morning” or “At early dawn”(oryrou bayeov)—is a Greek idiom, literally meaning, ‘at deep dawn.’

The Gospel of John tells us that it was still dark(Jn. 20:1). Yet The Gospel of Mark tells us that the sun had risen(Mk. 16:2).

•So, evidently it was still dark when they left together for “the tomb.” But by the time they arrived at Jesus’ “tomb” the sun had risen.”(RWP)

•Also, the location is ‘hilly or mountainous’ so the sun could have risen while still leaving the tomb in darkness or vice-versa.

The “spices & fragrant oils”(23:56) were for anointing the dead body as it corrupted.

*The Jews did not embalm, but rather merely covered the stench of decay, by anointing the body with sweet smelling aromatics(23:56)(NAC/BECNT).

It seems that the women had previously “prepared” these anointing “spices”(23:56). Mark’s gospel tells us that the women also “bought spices” “when the Sabbath was past.”

Argumentation:

Ps. 66:13-14—“I will go into Your house with burnt offerings; I will pay You my vows, Which my lips have uttered And my mouth has spoken when I was in trouble.”

Mat. 5:33-37—“Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’ “But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; “nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. “But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ & your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.”

Be FRUSTRATED In Their SERVICE(24:2-3)

Explanation:(24:2-3)The women’s intended plan failed, because Jesus’ body was missing.

Lk. 24:2-3—“But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in & did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.”

When the women approached “the tomb”, they found that “the stone” had been “rolled away” from its resting place over the entrance to the tomb.

Moving the “stone” sealing “the tomb” was no easy task, for even physically strong people—Mat. & Mk. call it “a large stone.” Perhaps this is why “they”(the women) went as a group to anoint the body. They may have been uncertainly hoping-against-hope to find help there.

Mark records(Mk. 16:3) that they even approached the tomb knowing/supposing it to be closed & wondered among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?””

There had been an earthquake associated with the angel’s presence & the stone’s displacement(Mat. 28:2).

John describes the stone’s displacement as having been ‘taken away’(airw).

The entrance of a Jewish tomb ‘could’ be anywhere from 3-6ft. high. But, Peter had to “stoop” to look inside Jesus’ tomb(:12). The “stone” covering the opening would be circular & placed on edge, so that it could be rolled into place to cover the entrance. “Stones” used in that manner were roughly 1ft. thick. And depending on the type of “stone” used, it could weigh between 600-4000 lbs. Potentially two men could roll it into place with great effort(Mt 27:60; Jn 19:38-42).

“The stone” was set inside a ‘groove’ in front of the entrance, & kept from falling away from the entrance, by a short “stone” retaining wall that stood in front of “the tomb” opening. The groove was slightly slanted toward “the tomb” entrance on one side. So to cover the entrance to “the tomb”, “the stone” would be rolled ‘down’ the incline & come to rest in an appropriate depression directly in front of the entrance & held in place behind the retaining wall.

The most difficult task was removing “the stone”, because it would have to be rolled ‘out’ of the groove, & back ‘up’ the incline.—‘The Size of the Stone Covering Jesus’ Tomb’ 03/2011 by jasondulle on theosophical.wordpress.com & What Did Jesus’ Tomb Look Like? An Interview with Leen Ritmeyer(Part 2) by Jason Taylor 07/2008 @ thegospelcoalition.org./ISBE

“Jesus’” borrowed “tomb” was probably more elaborate than most, given that Joseph was a member of the Sanhedrin(cf.-Isa. 53:9). And not all Jews could afford to be buried in a tomb.

*The women courageously entered “the tomb” probably in order to further care for & anoint “Jesus’” “body”. However, to their surprise, they “did not find” His “body” at all! “Jesus’” “body” was “not” there in “the tomb”!

•They had clearly seen Jesus’ “body” laid there before dusk on Friday(23:55). Now that it was Sunday, & “the body” was somehow missing!

OVERCOME PERPLEXITIES(24:4)

Explanation:(24:4)Confusion would be met with solution.

24:4—“And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.”

The circumstances surrounding the absence of Jesus’ body, so stunned the women, that they were “greatly perplexed” about the whole situation.

Adding to their “perplexity”, there suddenly ‘appeared’ “two men” standing beside them!(cf.-Mk. 16:5—one man)...Don't let this fool you into supposing that the Gospels are flawed. Each author's focus was merely different from that of another.

•These “men” were angels(Mat. 28:2, 5; Jn. 20:12) & they wore “shining garments”(Mat. 28:3).

•Mat. 28:2-3, 5—“And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, & came & rolled back the stone from the door, & sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, & his clothing as white as snow.”.....“But the angel answered & said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.”

•Jn. 20:12—of Mary Magdelene—“And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head & the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.”

Argumentation:

Php. 4:6-7—“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer & supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; & the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts & minds through Christ Jesus.”

Lk. 12:29-30; Mat. 6:33—““And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. For all these things the nations of the world seek after, & your Father knows that you need these things.”.....““But seek first the kingdom of God & His righteousness, & all these things shall be added to you.”

Application:

?Do YOU OVERCOME PERPLEXITIES, by the Holy Spirit, in serving the risen Lord Jesus?

9—An Implication from Jesus’ burial & resurrection is that God’s People Can...

RECOGNIZE Their LIMITATIONS(24:5-7)

Explanation:(24:5-7) The reality of Jesus’ resurrection was not considered.

24:5-7—“Then, as they were afraid & bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” “He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, “saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, & be crucified, & the third day rise again.’”

:5—“Then, as they were afraid & bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?”

The women responded to the angelic presence appropriately by “bowing” before these messengers of God.

The angels(“two men” “in shining garments”(:4)) questioned the motive of the women. The angels’ question, was an attempt to make them see that their quest for a still “dead” Jesus was absurd & ludicrous!

The angels directly ask the women a pointed question, “Why do you seek the living among the dead?”

Their question informed the situation for the women who were filled with “fear” & humility.

*Jesus was indeed now “living”! So it would be ridiculous seek Him “among the dead”!

:6-7—““He is not here, but is risen!” Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, “saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, & be crucified, & the third day rise again.’”

“He is not here, but is risen!”

What Jesus had previously said to them multiple times, was on NO ONE’S-radar’!

It had been prophesied by Jesus Himself at multiple times prior to the Cross, that He would be “raised” on “the third day.”

•Cf.-Mat. 16:21, 20:18-19, 26:2; Mk. 8:31, 9:31, 10:33-34; Lk. 17:25, 18:31-34.

•That specific prophecy of Jesus’ "rising" from the dead on “the third day”, was openly known, & is testified to by the insistence of the chief priests & Pharisees, for Pilate to secure a guard at Jesus’ tomb(Mat. 27:62-66; 28:4, 11-15).

•The chief priests & Pharisees were SO insistent, that they themselves violated Jewish law, making themselves ‘unclean’, by approaching the Gentile ruler(Pontius Pilate) on the Sabbath!

Many difficulties in our lives could & can be readily solved...

...IF we would only “remember” what YHWH God has said in regard to our need!

Argumentation:

Gen. 18:14—to Abraham & Sarah,—“Is anything too hard for the LORD?....”

Num. 11:23—to Moses,—“And the LORD said to Moses, “Has the LORD’S arm been shortened?...”

1Sam. 14:6—Jonathan to his armor bearer,—“...For nothing restrains the LORD from saving by many or by few.””

Job 42:1, 2—Job to YHWH,—“Then Job answered the LORD & said: “I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You.”

Jer. 32:17—“‘Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, You have made the heavens & the earth by Your great power & outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.”

Mat. 14:25, 28-32—During a storm on the Sea of Galilee,—“Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.”.....“And Peter answered Him & said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; & beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand & caught him, & said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.”

Mk. 10:27—Jesus told His disciples,—“with God all things are possible.”

Php. 3:20-21—“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.”

Php. 4:13—“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Application:

?Do YOU RECOGNIZE YOUR LIMITATIONS thru the risen Lord Jesus?

?What Implications are brought to YOUR life by Jesus’ burial & resurrection?

CONCLUSION:

1Cor. 15:16-23—“For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins! Then also those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable. But now Christ is risen from the dead, & has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.”

Rom. 4:25—of Jesus our Lord,—“who was delivered up because of our offenses, & was raised because of our justification.”
