Summary: Hebrews 6 is a difficult portion of scripture, we ponder to unlock it’s mystery.

LESSON ON BLASPHEMY? A LESSON ON HEBREWS 6.

By Wade Martin Hughes, Sr. Kyfingers@aol.com

Subject: What is Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit

From: ???????

I am seeking Biblical wisdom on this subject of blasphemy? Is it premeditating sin? Or is it something totally different?

Can it be committed today? And how do you know if one might have committed this sin? Does Backsliding fit into this

somehow? How many times can a person backslide and come back to the Lord?

I have many questions but this one is the most important one to me. Thank you.

My reply: Wow, you can ask a very deep question. There is no easy answer.

Let us ponder some important factors regarding blasphemy?

Some seem to never learn the difference of price, worth, and value? We must learn about sin’s cost.

Title: The Value of a Soul

On-line auction houses are becoming more popular these days. While you can buy or sell almost anything with a

computer, some items are still out of bounds In late February, the on-line auction company e-Bay removed a

Canadian man’s offer to sell his soul to the highest bidder. Sterling Jones, a self-described atheist, planned to

send the successful bidder a paper stating that the person now owned his soul.

Officials of e-Bay did not appreciate Jones’ attempt to auction his soul, and removed the offer. They sent Jones

an e-mail explaining that if a soul does not exist, e-Bay could not allow the auction because there would be

nothing to sell. If souls do exist, e-Bay said a soul would fall under the company’s ban against auctioning

human parts of remains.

The Riverside Press Enterprise, which first reported the story, says by the time th eoffer was pulled February 22nd,

the site had recorded nine bids. The highest offer $20.50.

Jesus asked, " What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man

give in exchange for his soul?" E-Bay could not say whether or not man had a soul. The bidders on the site had

no idea what to offer for a man’s soul. Jesus showed us the true value of a soul. It is the most valuable thing we have.

The best use of the soul is not selling it, but surrendering ALL to the Lord. Associated Press, 2-24-2000

Jesus bid the highest bid on the value and worth of a man’s soul. Jesus bid it all. He lay His life down to redeem

fallen man.

Before we can understand blasphemy we must understand and we must first define sin.

We cannot just use a Dictionary to define sin. The dictionary would say: an offensive against moral law, a fault, a

serious shortcoming, an action that is reprehensible, it might even say a transgression of the law of God.

The Bible defines sin a little differently than man.

James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Yes, sin can be wandering from the path of righteous, but Biblically sin can be more than just doing wrong. One can

be outwardly pure and inwardly sick.

Matthew 5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery.

28 But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery already in his heart.

TWO BROAD CATEGORIES OF SIN:

1. COMMISSION

To carry into action deliberately, behavior, give over to, to perpetrate,

2. OMISSION

to neglect or leave undone, apathy, to leave out, to fail to perform, to give up, to let go,

THE THREE FOLD CLASSIFICATION OF SIN ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE:

1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes,

and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the Will of God abideth forever.

1. Lust of the Flesh

2. Lust of the eyes

3.Pride of life

WE COULD ALSO BREAK SIN INTO THESE CATEGORIES:

1. Cardinal sins --- sin and failure of religious or ecclesiastical leaders.

2. Mortal sins --- hostile, intense, sin that could lead to death.

3. Venial sin --- excusable, forgivable, pardonable, most all sin would fall in this category.

WE ARE NOT PERFECT, WE ALL HAVE WEAKNESSES AND FAILURES.

1 John 1: 9 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His Word is not in us.

John 8:7 So when they continued asking Him, He lifted up Himself, and said unto them, HE WHO IS

WITHOUT SIN AMONG YOU, let him cast the first stone at her.

Romans 3:23 For ALL have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

TO SIN IS NOT NECESSARILY BLASPHEMY!

TO BACKSLIDE IS NOT NECESSARILY BLASPHEMY.

LET US DEFINE BLASPHEMY....

1. CALUMNY (cal-um-ny) IS A MISREPRESENTATION INTENDED TO BLACKEN

ANOTHER’S REPUTATION. It is maliciously saying false charges to damage another’s reputation.

So in a sense it is evil speaking against God and abusing God.

( We can find an example in Psa. 74:18, Isa. 52:5, Rom. 2:24)

Jesus was accused of this kind of blasphemy when He claimed the SONSHIP of God. (Luke 22:65;

John 10:36) This is a vilification of God!

2. The expression that designated that the miracles of Jesus was performed by Satanic powers.

3. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is defined as a continual and obstinate rejection of the men of God,

the Word of God, and the Spirit of God. This reoccurring, prolonged, persistent, resisting of the Gospel is

considered the unpardonable sin. It is considered this very simply because as long as one continues in sin

and remains an unbeliever, the sinner has made a choice and he willingly and voluntarily ignores the mercy and

grace of Jesus Christ. Thus he excludes himself from the benefits and knowledge that is promised in the Bible.

A soul that has continually rejected the cross then comes under the satanic power and offers a blindness to the

hings of God. Unbelief will hinder all prayer and the person is willfully deaf to the voice of the Spirit of God.

OUR ENEMY IS A TERRIBLE FOE, MANY TIMES THE ENEMY WILL TRY TO PAINT A SINNER INTO

THE FALSE CORNER OF BLASPHEMY.

A person chooses sin and breaks the commandments of God, and the enemy will try to confuse the fallen

believer that there is no use, you are so dirty God refuses you! This is a lie!

As the writer of the question we started with, there is a condemnation not from God.

I am seeking Biblical wisdom on this subject of blasphemy? Is it premeditating sin? Or is it something totally

different? Can it be committed today? And how do you know if one might have committed this sin?

Does Backsliding fit into this somehow? How many times can a person backslide and come back to the Lord.

The Lord is FULL of GRACE and MERCY! Jesus made great provisions to restore and heal and mend the broken!

Jesus offers compassion and great forbearance, if one will repent and confess. There is a difference in being sorry

I got caught and real repentance.

WHEN THE ENEMY THROWS UP YOUR PAST, YOU THROW UP HIS FUTURE!

Psalms 34:18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

MANY WANT TO PAINT THE PUMP, BUT THIS DOES NOT PURIFY THE WATER.

We must learn there is a big difference between white washing and washing white.

When I was a college student there was a young man, he never took showers, he would splash on some good after shave

lotion and deodorant. Many avoided him, no matter how powerful the cologne, the dirty smell would always over power

the good smell. We must learn to do more than cover-up sin, we need to go to the root and, as Barney Fife would

say: NIP IT, NIP IT IN THE BUD.

REPENTANCE IS MORE THAN MAKING EXCUSES FOR SIN.

How sad, Adam blamed Eve, they both blamed God, and we see no real repentance.

Gen. 3:12. History might have been different if Adam and Eve fell down and repented.

All Adam needed to do was repent.

Aaron had lead the people in sin as they made the golden calf and worshipped it.

Exo. 32:24 Records a very sad level of repentance. Aaron excused his behavior, and said They gave me the gold,

we threw the gold into the fire, and there came out this calf.

I don’t belief Aaron’s excuse. All Aaron had to do was repent.

1 Samuel 13 :12 is a sad history of an unrepentant man. Saul, the first king of Israel had disobeyed the man of

God’s commands, thus he rejected God’s will for himself and the nation. Saul said I forced myself to offer

burnt offering to the Lord. Saul does not learn and stoops to sin again, 1 Samuel 15: 19-24.

Saul excuses his sin and says that the people made him? Who was the King?

Saul lies and says: I HAVE OBEYED the voice of the Lord.

No, you did not Saul! You didn’t acknowledge, confess, or repent, --- O, Saul you are headed towards a

painful end. All Saul had to do was repent!

HERE IS A SCRIPTURE THAT OUR ENEMY THROWS UP TO THE BACKSLIDDEN, LET US

ADDRESS THE ENEMY’S DISTORTIONS!

Many read Hebrews 6 and become convinced that there is no mercy and grace for them because

they have fallen. This is a distortion from the enemy’s camp! The enemy so distorts the word of God

that fear is bred and released.

Hebrews 6:4 --9

4. For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift,

and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost.

5: And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,

6: If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of

God afresh, and put him to an open shame. 7: For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it,

and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: 8: But that which

beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned. 9: But, beloved,

we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.

Let us look at what this great mystery scripture is addressing, BETTER THINGS.

Hebrews 6 iS not a lesson on a just backslidding and a partial spiritual declining.

Paul is not saying that a person that sins can never find repentance.

These verses are discussing an open and avowed renouncing of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

The individuaL discussed here is one that has become an enemy of the cross, the Bible, and the church.

These have tasted the good things of God and known the knowledge of truth.

The impossibility of them returning is not because the BLOOD of Jesus is not sufficient to restore one to

a complete pardon of sin, no never. There is still power in Jesus’ blood.

God makes provisions for restoration and reconciliation.

Look at the Word! Paul is not saying a backslidden individual cannot be forgiven and restored,

we can prove this. The very nature and heart of God is to forgive. We know several in the Bible that served the

Lord and failed Him, then returned and served the Lord with a greater love and determination than ever before.

DAVID FAILED:

King David failed the Lord, David chose sin. David didn’t go to battle and stayed home and while idle, David

watched a lady take a bath. This bred lust and temptation and David fathered an illegitimate son. To cover his sin,

David had a good man killed.

God never threw David away. Nathan the man of God confronted David and David repented.

Psalms 51, is the greatest chapter of repentance recorded in the Bible. David sinned, but he repented, and God

accepted David’s brokeness. God’s nature is to forgive and restore.

PETER FAILED:

How about Peter? Peter failed Jesus. Peter had walked with Jesus. Peter had seen the miracles Jesus performed.

Peter started failing by sleeping through the prayer meeting.

Peter had his foot in his mouth often. Peter even rebuked Jesus. Peter had a false sense of power, no, Jesus I will

never let you down. The morning was very cold, and Peter was cold... as Peter warmed by the wrong fire, Peter

denied knowing Jesus. (John 21:3-17) Peter cursed and said bad words, Peter failed the Lord.

But the rooster finished his little sermon and Peter looked and saw Jesus, and Peter was so broken, he cried ---

Peter disappointed the Lord. Peter failed in a time of crisis, but as the tears ran down Peter’s face, he repented

and was restored to deliver the first sermon, What meanth this?, after Pentecost.

Jesus forgave David! Jesus forgave Peter!

Look at Luke 15, the LOST CHAPTER, the son came home and the Father received him not as a servant,

but as a restored son!

Sometimes we can get so religious, our outward righteousness has a way of hiding our inward corruption and sin.

Matthew 23:27 Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees, HYPOCRITES! For ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which

indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and all uncleanness.

Many serve God with a lip service. I is possible to think I am pleasing God and be doing nothing for God.

Matthew 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouths, and honoreth me, with their lips;

but their heart is far from Me. 9. But in vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Many are sitting in the phew, or pew --- they profess, but they possess nothing.

Matthew 7: 19 --23

19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20: Wherefore by their fruits ye

shall know them. 21: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he

that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22: Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not

prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

23: And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Hebrews 6 is more than an account of nature of man to sin, this a complete computation voluntary renouncing of

Christ and His cross and the Word of God. Blasphemy is joining the enemy’s team, and uniting with evil. It is

selfishness and deceitfulness and there is no penitent spirit.

We must stay forever near the foot of the cross. We must respect the Word of God and the men of God.

We must feel great sorrow and regret and sorrow when we sin and offend the God head.

Psalms 51:12 Restore unto me the JOY of THY salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Don’t listen to the distortions of our enemy, GOD FORGIVES! LET HIM!

The cross is the uniting factor of God with fallen man. Under the blood of Jesus we are in harmony and

great friendship with our Savior and Creator. It is forever settled to those that repent and come to the cross.

We need to submit to God’s Holy Spirit, we were alienated, separated and hopeless --- then Jesus came.

We must accept Him as Lord and Savior!

Could you enlarge my hands and pass this on?
