Summary: Doing God’s work in man’s ways

Door Knobs and Light Switches

(Doing God¡¦s Work Man¡¦s Way)

TEXT: James 4:1-4

OBJECTS: 1 Door Knob, 1 Wall Switch

1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Our Preparations vs. God¡¦s Plan

Our Promotions vs. God¡¦s Provision

Our Programs vs. God¡¦s Power

Observations:

„X A Doorknob is a more physically understandable item¡Xa Light Switch either works or doesn¡¦t

„X A Doorknob requires effort¡Xwe simply trust the Light Switch

„X A Doorknob is a local object¡Xa Light Switch requires power from afar

„X A Doorknob can be limited in access by lock and key (under our control)¡Xa Light Switch is available to all with the power out of our hands (not under our control)

Final Observations:

Ħ No amount of doorknobs can ever turn the least bit of light on

Ħ The power to turn the knob is not equal to the power of the electricity running through the light switch

ƒ¶ Doors can be used to shut away, hide behind, or hoard up behind, guarded by the door knob¡Xthe light switch brings light and direction to all.
