Summary: Lets say you are playing for the NBA championship and in the fouth quater you are down 40 points. You have a guy on the bench that has not played a minute, as a matter of fact, he is still in his warm ups and not even sweating. The guys name is Michael

Wake up Jesus!

Mark 4:35-41

5 As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, "Let’s cross to the other side of the lake." 36 He was already in the boat, so they started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). 37 But soon a fierce storm arose. High waves began to break into the boat until it was nearly full of water. 38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. Frantically they woke him up, shouting, "Teacher, don’t you even care that we are going to drown?" 39 When he woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the water, "Quiet down!" Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 And he asked them, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still not have faith in me?" 41 And they were filled with awe and said among themselves, "Who is this man, that even the wind and waves obey him?"

I. Jesus is a “troublemaker.”

DEF: Trouble: source of distress, difficulty, pain, disease, or malfunction Maker: One that makes or manufactures. So Jesus is the one who makes us aware of the source of our pains…

a. He knows exactly what you’re in.

1. Jesus is the one who “allows” things to happen to us.

2. He does not do all these things, he just allows it.

3. We see in this passage that Jesus said, “lets cross to the other side of the

lake”

4. It is not as if he didn’t know a storm was coming.

5. As a matter of fact he WAS IN THE BOAT WITH THEM!!!!!

6. He was asleep, but I am sure he was aware of the surroundings.

b. Your “trouble” is a process.

1. Egg: If you know of any way to make an omelet without cracking an egg please let me know.

2. How do I know the peril of not being a good steward unless I have some financial trouble?

3. The only way players can get ready for a game is if they practice. You can read the play book until the words begin to disappear, but it is only when you get into a serious practice, where you get sweaty, dirty, hurt, will you learn.

4. Then you can truly say: “coach put me in the game.”

c. Jesus knew all, before hand [Psalms 139:16].

1.Q Why should I get saved if I am going to have problems?

2.A Christianity is not a cakewalk. God does not put you through problems for no reason. He is trying to refine you.

3. What does pain and hurt indicate? That something is wrong. (We would not get rid of some stuff in our lives if we didn’t have some pain.)

4. When you feel the pain you need to address it, because it is when the pain subsides, and before you know it, its not there any more, THEN YOU HAVE TROUBLE!! (Example: PERFECT EXAMPLE: Pastor gave before. The Tooth)

5. This passage shows me this: Sometimes the worst storms happen when you are closest to Jesus.

II. You cannot do it alone. [John 15:5]

a. Christians were not created to be independent.

1. Independent: Free from the influence, guidance, or control of another: self-reliant. Interdependent: Mutually relying on or requiring the aid of another.

2. You need God, plain and simple. (Side note: We also need each other)

3. If you cannot do ANYTHING apart from God it is a safe bet to say that if you ARE part of God you CAN do anything. [John 15:7]

b. Don’t let pride fool you.

1. You can go to all the schools in the world, and get all the degrees, if you don’t have Christ in the mix it is not going to last or make sense.

2. You can have all the money in the US mint, and it won’t mean anything, sooner or later, its going to turn for the worse.

3. In the passage it stated that the [v.37].

4. These guys were fishermen. So they had to be used to storms. So used to it, that they waited until the boat was nearly full with water. Why??? ( possibly because they thought they had it under control!!)

5. Please don’t think that you are smart enough or you can outwit God; that you have found a fool proof way to get your paper and keep it.

6. God is smarter than you think. (You cannot outwit the very person who created you, and the very person who knows the plans that he has for you. Jeremiah 29:11)

7. Because when you think that, and think you are getting over, is when its all over.

8. There is NOTHING or NO ONE who can give you the help you need like Jesus

can. Why, because he has a combination of three things that no other person or thing has. TOTAL ability, TOTAL resources, TOTAL authority.

9. If you choose something else, you will come up short. (dryer sheets???)

c. Get the help you need.

1. Why don’t people ask for help? It shows your dependence on the individual

you are asking.

2. It reveals you as vulnerable.

3. Another reason: people are afraid of the help they are going to receive.

4. Bad relationships, bad money decisions. You ask for help and you KNOW the

People you ask are going to tell you what you may have been doing wrong.

5. Once you start asking God for help, he sits up in heaven and DELIGHTS. (see

That’s my son he needs me, he depends on me, let me hook him up)

6. Myth: Getting help is not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of maturity

III. Jesus its time to wake up.

a. Don’t be fooled Christ cares.

1. There are many who will tell you “Look what you are going through, there is

NO WAY that God can love you if you are going through that”.

2. Proverbs 3:12

3. There are times where God tells us not to do stuff and we just don’t listen so

he has to get through to us in some other way.

b. You just have to ask him.

1. John 5:7 again!!!

2. Going to Jesus shows that you respect his Lordship, you acknowledge who he

is and what he can do in your situation.

3. You have to wake him. (It does not say, then Jesus arose).

4 How do I “wake him up”

a. First acknowledge him as your personal savior

b. Recognize him as your source for survival.

c. Stay in constant communication with him. [John 5:4]

d. With your worship, praise and adoration towards him in all things.

e. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

c. There is no situation too “small”. (We always focus on the “big problems”)

1. From cancer to a toothache, from diabetes to a headache.

2. If you are a believer that truly believes that Jesus suffered & died on the

cross, and rose again For you, why can’t you believe him for anything else?

3. The disciples knew about Jesus healing the man with the deformed hand, him

healing the paralyzed man, him healing the man with leprosy, and he even

healed peters mother in law, and still they didn’t think enough to think maybe,

just maybe this guy can help us out.

4. Jesus even asked them “Do you STILL not have faith in me?”

i. Do you still have faith in Jesus?

ii. Even though Jesus said that he will take care of you, do you still have

doubt, worry, frustration about certain things

iii. We need not to do that and we need to REST in the WORD of the Lord.

5. The disciples asked Jesus Frantically “Don’t you even care that we are going to drown?”

6. This might be an accepted statement given their current situation.

7. What makes it really a problem is that they asked after Jesus had already said

“Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.”

8. This is how we treat Jesus at times. We have NO FAITH!

Once you wake him up

IV. You will be excited about Jesus.

a. Stand in awe of Him.

1. Once you take out the time to put Jesus in his rightful place in your life by

going to him at all times, you will begin to understand how good he is to you.

2. You will worship him at the very thought of who he is to you.

3 the phrase in verse 41 was not a statement that was made in hopes for an

answer. It was a statement of assurance!

b. See his love for you.

1. Once you begin to see that God is a God who does these things for your good

You will begin to see the purpose of it all.

2. This way when something comes that is unexpected, you will say thank you

Jesus. I know you are doing something here.

3. Making that statement with your actions will bring about a joy over you. And

then the “problem” that started out to irk you will transform into a “FUTURE

TESTIMONY”

4. How much did Jesus Love his disciples “peace be still” He even commanded

the quiet to be quiet.

c. Understand his power.

1. Know who he is, and what he is able to do.

2. The things in your life aren’t freak accidents. They were planned out. It is up

to you to decide which way are you going to go.

3. Saying you are a Christian will mean nothing if you don’t fully surrender and

understand that it is only Jesus who can save you ALL the time!

3. It does you NO GOOD if you are loosing the game, and you have Michael Jordan on your team, and you keep him on the bench.
