Beloved in Christ, welcome! Here we are, gathered once more in the warm embrace of our shared faith, united by the ineffable love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We come together today, not as separate individuals, but as a collective body of Christ, a family bound by the divine love that transcends all understanding.
Today, we turn our hearts and minds towards a profound passage in the book of 1 Samuel, Chapter 30, verses 1-19. It reads:

As we contemplate this passage, let us remember the words of the revered Christian author, Charles Spurgeon, who once said, "By perseverance the snail reached the ark." In our lives, we too are called to persevere, to turn to the right source in times of trouble, to take authority with the word, and to trust in God's restoration.
In the midst of our daily struggles and challenges, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to turn. The story of David in 1 Samuel 30 provides a powerful example of where our focus should be in times of distress. David, finding his city burned and his family taken captive, was in a situation of utter despair. Yet, in his distress, he didn't turn to his own strength or to his fellow men for comfort. Instead, he turned to God, his ultimate source of strength and guidance.
For us in life: We often find ourselves in situations similar to David's. We face trials and tribulations that leave us feeling helpless and alone. We may be tempted to rely on our own strength or to seek comfort in worldly things. But the story of David reminds us that our true source of strength and guidance is God. When we turn to Him in times of trouble, He provides us with the strength and wisdom we need to overcome our challenges. This is not to say that we shouldn’t seek help from others or rely on our own abilities. God has blessed us with talents and abilities, and He has placed people in our lives to support and guide us. But ultimately, our strength and guidance should come from God. He is our rock and our fortress, our ever-present help in times of trouble.
Turn to God as our source: When we do this, we also acknowledge our dependence on Him. We recognize that we are not self-sufficient, that we need God's strength and guidance to navigate through life. This act of turning to God is an act of humility, a recognition of our own limitations and a declaration of our dependence on God.
Turning to God as our source also means trusting in His sovereignty: It means believing that He is in control of our lives and that He has a plan for us. Even when we don't understand why certain things are happening, we trust that God is working all things together for our good. In the story of David, we see this trust in action. Despite the dire circumstances, David trusted in God's sovereignty. He didn't question why God had allowed this to happen. Instead, he trusted that God was in control and that He would provide a way out.
Turning to God as our source means seeking His will in all things: It means making decisions based on God's guidance and not on our own desires or understanding. In the story of David, we see this clearly. David didn't act on his own. He sought God's guidance before pursuing the Amalekites. He trusted that God would lead him in the right direction. In our own lives, we can follow David's example by seeking God's will in all things. When faced with decisions, big or small, we can turn to God for guidance. We can pray for wisdom and discernment, trusting that God will lead us in the right direction.
