• Review from last time
• Two problems: How could a Holy God draw near to a sinful mankind; How could God draw a sinful mankind to Himself
• Incarnation and the Atonement
Today we are going to have a bit of a theology lesson
• Theology, which is the study of God, is normally reserved for scholars and academics who use awful sounding Greek terms and titles which leave us feeling cold
• But I hope to show you today in tangible terms how theology is important to understanding the unique relationship you and I share with our wonderful God
So today we are going to be looking at the role of Jesus Christ as our Mediator and my hope is that through it we will come to a better understanding of the depth of God’s love for mankind
• A mediator is one who stands between two parties to order to affect a “reconciliation”
• 1 Timothy 2:5 (NKJV) 5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
• Diagram – God, Jesus - Fully God and Fully man (Hypostatic Union, or Incarnational Union), Sinful Mankind
• Now unless Jesus Christ is both fully god and foully man , none of what follows can happen
• Part of Jesus’ mission with the Incarnation was to give a more complete revelation of who God is
• Up to this point in time, the revelation of God was limited. He revealed Himself to mankind in His creation and through His work with the Nation of Israel
• But the closer God tried to draw near to Israel, the harder they resisted. That’s what the carnal heart will do
• So the question lingered in the mind of the Jews and sometimes lingers in the minds of Christians as to whether God is really a God of love after all (1John 4:8)
• So part of Jesus’ mission was to dispel once and for all this notion that God is this arbitrary, capricious God who just wants to punish His people like the pagan gods around them
• And unfortunately today, we see the same misconception of God being bantered around with many churches approaching the subject of evangelism leading from the perspective of “hell”
• Now “hell” is part of the gospel, but it is significantly eclipsed by the love of God
• And we have to believe that God would prefer He be represented to this dark and dying world as the God who loves us so much He provided the sacrifice of His own Son to free us from the chains of sin and death so we could spend eternity with Him
• So through the Incarnation and especially through the Atonement, Jesus wanted to display once and for all time just what kind of God He is
• In other words, the Work of God and the Person of God are one and the same
• What He does cannot be separated from what He is in His Being
• God is love and this love is displayed through His actions namely through the Incarnation and the Atonement
