Sermon shared by Jonathan Mcleod

April 2004
Summary: What it means to be in Christ instead of in sin
Denomination: Baptist
Audience: General adults
God.

Christians once "WERE BY NATURE THE CHILDREN OF WRATH, even as others" (Ephesians 2:3b).

"Being now justified, WE SHALL BE SAVED FROM WRATH THROUGH HIM" (Romans 5:9).

Christ "DELIVERED US FROM THE WRATH TO COME" (1 Thessalonians 1:10).

"GOD HATH NOT APPOINTED US TO WRATH, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thessalonians 5:9).

We see the wrath of God in the Bibleís most famous verse: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him SHOULD NOT PERISH, but have everlasting life." The alternative to everlasting life is perishing. "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; BUT THE WRATH OF GOD ABIDETH ON HIM" (John 3:16, 36).

"THE WRATH OF THE LORD IS REVEALED FROM HEAVEN AGAINST ALL UNGODLINESS AND UNRIGHTEOUSNESS OF MEN" (Romans 1:18).

"But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving thanks. But this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: FOR BECAUSE OF THESE THINGS COMETH THE WRATH OF GOD UPON THE CHILDREN OF DISOBEDIENCE" (Ephesians 5:6).

B. The Christian now enjoys the wealth of God.

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, WHO HATH BLESSED US WITH ALL SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS IN HEAVENLY PLACES IN CHRIST" (Ephesians 1:3).

We are not only saved FROM HELL; we are saved TO HEAVEN.

APPLICATION

Why has God done all of this for you? Because of His "GREAT LOVE" (v. 4).

What should be your response to Godís great love? Paul gives us the answer: "I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that YE WALK WORTHY OF THE VOCATION WHEREWITH YE ARE CALLED" (Ephesians 4:1).
