This sermon aims to discuss the importance of order in the church, specifically focusing on the qualifications and responsibilities of church leaders as outlined in Titus 1:5-9.

Introduction

Good morning, church family! Today, we're going to dive into a topic that's extremely important for the vitality and effectiveness of our community of faith - the qualifications and responsibilities of our church leaders. We're going to talk about why it's so crucial for us to have order in our church. Our guide for this discussion is going to be Titus 1:5-9.

Now, before we read and unpack these verses, here's a quote from one of our respected Christian authors, C.S. Lewis, that sets the stage for our conversation. He once said, "The church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time."

I. The Qualifications of Church Leaders

The qualifications of church leaders, as outlined in Titus 1:5-9, are not only important but also vital for the health and growth of the church. These qualifications serve as a guide, a standard, and a benchmark for those who are called to lead God's people. They are not arbitrary or optional, but rather, they are divinely inspired and mandated.

A. Firstly, the scripture mentions that an elder must live a blameless life. This does not mean that our leaders should be perfect, as we all fall short of the glory of God. However, it does mean that they should strive for a life of integrity, honesty, and righteousness. They should be individuals whose lives are above reproach, who strive to live in accordance with God's commandments and who are quick to repent when they fall short.

B. Secondly, the scripture highlights the importance of family life in the qualifications of a church leader. An elder must be faithful to his wife, and his children must be believers who don’t have a reputation for being wild or rebellious. This underscores the importance of a stable and godly family life. It is within the family that we first learn about love, respect, and commitment. If a leader cannot manage his own household well, how can he take care of God's church?

C. Thirdly, the scripture points out that a leader must not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or dishonest with money. These are characteristics that can cause division, strife, and scandal within the church. A leader should be humble, patient, self-controlled, and trustworthy. He should be a person of good character, who leads by example and not just by words.

D. Fourthly, the scripture states that a leader must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must love what is good. This speaks to the leader's hospitality and love for righteousness. A leader should be welcoming, kind, and generous. He should have a heart for people and a passion for the things of God.

E. Lastly, the scripture emphasizes that a leader must live wisely and be just. He must live a devout and disciplined life. He must have a strong belief in the trustworthy message he was taught; then he will be able to encourage others with wholesome teaching and show those who oppose it where they are wrong. This speaks to the leader's spiritual maturity, wisdom, and ability to teach and defend the faith. A leader should be a person who is grounded in the Word of God, who lives out his faith in his daily life, and who is able to instruct and guide others in their spiritual journey.

These qualifications are not meant to discourage or disqualify potential leaders, but rather, they are meant to ensure that those who are called to lead are equipped and prepared to do so effectively. They serve as a reminder that leadership in the church is not about power or prestige, but about service, sacrifice, and spiritual maturity.

II. The Responsibility of Church Leaders

The responsibility of church leaders is a concept that is deeply rooted in the Bible and is essential for the proper functioning of the church ... View this full PRO sermon free with PRO
