Summary: A little slipping usually ends up in a big fall if something is not rectified in short order.

I Will Not Waver Too Much

or

I Shall NOT Be Moved

SLIGHTLY SLIPPING

Psalm 62:1-12

There is only one word different between verse 2 and verse 6, but it makes a whole lot of difference.

Just how much does one have to slip to hurt himself or herself? A little slip can produce a lot of hurt.

Eccl. 3:1

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

--We need to know when it is time to move and when it is time to stand firm.

There are times when we need to flee temptation and youthful lusts and there are times when we need to stand our ground against the onslaught of the enemy.

2 Tim 2:22

Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Eph 6:14

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

A Possible Scene: David is living as a fugitive, hiding from his son, Absolom, who has robbed the throne.

2 Samuel 15:6, 14-17

6 And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

14 And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword. {bring: Heb. thrust}

15 And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint. {appoint: Heb. choose}

16 And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house. {after...: Heb. at his feet}

King David is temporarily removed from his throne, and things are somewhat in disarray.

Divisions of Psalm 62

I. David confronts his enemies (vs. 1-4) ---it seems that he is a little insecure

II. David talks to himself (vs. 5-7) ---he motivates himself and feels more valiant.

Jude 1:20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,

III. David encourages and motivates his followers (vs. 8-11) ---the need to completely confide in the Lord.

IV. David exalts the Lord (vs. 12) ---God will pay each one justly in time.

3 Pictures of Security from vs. 2 & 6

1. Rock--firm, stable, solid

2. Salvation--liberty, freedom

3. Defence (refuge) ---place of protection

If we are honest, we will admit that there are times when we feel unstable, and we move just a little bit.

What are those things that would try to move us? It is not always a major shift (at least not at first), but is a move in the wrong direction.

I. Satan

(DOUBT)

2 Samuel 24:1

And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

-- on this occasion, the devil was tempting David to make a census of Israel. This was not Gods' plan.

The temptation is trust in the arm of flesh and not have complete confidence in the plan of God.

The devil did his best to persuade Job to curse God for all the negative things going on in his life; he even used his wife to aggravate the situation.

II. Sin

Isa. 59:2

But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Example: Lot--he started out with Abraham, then after a controversy, he was found at the gate of Sodom, and then he was in the center of Sodom.

III. Afflictions

1 Thes. 3:3

That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.

Ps. 55:22

Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

--You don't have to buckle under pressure, if you give it all to the Lord.

IV. Companions

Acts 20:24

But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

--Even Paul was tempted by good friends with good intents (though self-serving). Sometimes it would just be easier and more convenient to follow the wishes of family and friends instead of following the will of God.

V. The Cares of Life

Even John the Baptist, on one occasion, asked," Are you the Christ, or should we look for another?" The trials of life can be cruel and prolonged.
