Text: Hebrews 2:14-15 (King James Version)

"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil. (v. 15) And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage."

Topic: The Devil Destroyed!

Have you ever noticed in the secular world how one structure must be destroyed so that a new structure can be built? We see this happening all the time in new subdivisions, new high-rise apartment complexes, new skyscrapers - many of which are erected after a wrecking ball or explosive detonation has done its work of destruction on the previous structures that were there! We have to knock down the old to make room for the new!

This morning, my brothers and sisters, the Lord would have us look at Jesus, the Christ, as the Destroyer - not as the Fixer - which is our usual topic when it concerns Him! In order for Jesus, the Christ, to fix our lives - whatever it is that needs fixing in them - some demolition needs to take place first! The old life - that sinful one - and, the devil himself must be destroyed before the process of building the new life - that saintly one - in Christ Jesus, can begin!

In the course of the destruction of our old sinful life, there are three (3) separate characters who are affected by the "demolition derby" taking place: Satan - humanity - and, Jesus, the Christ, Himself! The beloved Disciple/Apostle John, in 1 John 3:8 (NLT), tells us: "But when people keep on sinning, it shows they belong to the Devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy these works of the Devil."

First, we have a doomed Satan! Death is Satanís weapon of choice! The only way to destroy Satan was to rob him of his weapon of death! Satan takes great pleasure in our death - our physical death - our spiritual death - and, our Eternal death! Satan knew that Almighty God required death for us because of sin! Death had become the most certain fact of life - the moment we were born, we began to die! Satan knew that if we remained as we were - sinners - that we would die and go out of Almighty Godís Presence into Eternal torment in the flames of Hell! Therefore, Satan wants to hold on to us until we die; because, once we are dead, the opportunity for Salvation is gone forever - that, is the "Unpardonable Sin" - to reject Almighty God and die in our sins!

Satan has been sinning from the beginning! All sin originated with Satan! Did you see it? Were you listening? The beloved Disciple/Apostle John told us that the devil is the source of all sin! There has never been a sin committed that did not have its origin in the Satanic mind!

The late great Lutheran pietist clergyman, Johann Albrecht Bengel (1687 - 1752) explained that "from the
