The Apostle John, in John 19:17 (KJV), tells us: "And
He bearing His cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:" Now, what is interesting to note about this crucifixion site, is the fact that all three (3) visible crosses, held the bodies of individuals who would have to make a serious choice in their lives! Now, notice, also, that in order to make a choice, one has to engage in a process that utilizes his or her mind - and, "Where is the mind located?" - you guessed it, in the skull!
I want us to take a few moments here to reflect on the three (3) visible crosses:
1. The middle or center cross held the body of Jesus, the Christ, the "Author and Finisher" of our faith! If you turn to Luke 23:46 (KJV), you will discover these words: "And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands, I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost." It was at this moment in time, that Jesus, the Christ, bridged the huge gap that existed between a "Holy" God and "sinful" humanity - both male and female - thereby, making Him the Mediator between God and man; continually, on a daily basis, making intercession for you and for me!
Oh yes, my brothers and sisters, it was this cross, the cross of Jesus, the Christ, that bridged the enormous chasm that was created by human sin - and, church, it was a bridge that was firmly anchored at both ends! On the one end, the "Deity" of Jesus, the
Christ, attached the cross securely to Heaven’s bedrock! While on the other end, the "Humanity" of Jesus, attached the cross securely to this planet called "Earth". Jesus, the High and Holy One became the Meek and Lowly One - Jesus, the Christ, paid a debt he did not owe to cancel a debt we could not pay - and, the Son of God became man so that we could become the sons of God." (Adapted from "Our Daily Bread" - a Radio Bible Class Ministry publication).
2. The other two (2) visible crosses held the bodies of two (2) convicted thieves! Now, my Holy Bible is not
clear about which thief hung on which cross; however, there is some indication that would leave one to believe that the cross to the left side of Jesus, held the body of a thief who would subsequently find himself eternally tormented in the flames of Hell; because he failed to accept Jesus, the Christ, as "The Way, The Truth, and The Life!
3. The cross on the right side of Jesus, held the body of a thief who would subsequently find himself - that very same day - with Jesus, the Christ in Paradise; because this thief, although he started out like the
other thief, mocking Jesus, finally figured out who
Jesus really was and said, "Lord, remember me when
thou comest into Thy Kingdom."
Now, let’s take a few more moments and examine the three (3) choices that each individual made:
1. Jesus, the Christ, faced the choice of either exercising His awesome power as the "Omnipotent" (all-powerful) God to end His extreme agony, pain, and suffering; OR, to continue on to His ultimate end - His very own death and subsequent resurrection - so that His Father’s will would be done; resulting in His Father being glorified; thereby glorifying the Son!
Jesus, the Christ, chose to continue His suffering to His ultimate end; and when He said, "It is finished," and breathed His last breath as a man; the "fourth cross" appeared
