THE MOTHER-HEART OF GOD

(337)

Sermon shared by Kenneth Trent

May 2000
Summary: No greater compliment can be paid to motherhood than God comparing His great love for us with the tender, compassionate love of a godly mother toward her children.
Denomination: Baptist
Audience: General adults
THE MOTHER-HEART OF GOD

"For thus saith the Lord: Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river. and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream. Then you shall feed. On her sides shall you be carried, and dandled on her knees, as one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you." Isaiah 66:12-13.

God pays a wonderful tribute to motherhood in Isaiah as He refers to His love for His children as "a mother’s love". Jesus paid the same tribute to motherhood when He spoke of His concern and love for Jerusalem being typified by "a hen gathering her chicks under her wing."

I. THE LOVE OF A CHRISTIAN MOTHER TPIIFIES THE LOVE OF GOD FOR HIS CHILDREN:
"To know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God." Ephesians 3:19.

God’s love is non-preferential.
Illustration: A mother who had twelve children was asked which one she loved the best. Her answer: "The one who’s sick until he gets well; and the one who is away until he gets back home!"

II. THE CONCERN OF A CHRISTIAN MOTHER TYPIFIES GOD’S CONCERN FOR HIS CHILDREN:
"Casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you."
It has been said: "A father becomes concerned when his child breaks a bone….a mother when her child skins a knee!"

III. THE SACRIFICIAL COMPASSION OF A CHRISTIAN MOTHER TYPIFIES GOD’S SACRIFICIAL HEART:
"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich." II Corinthians 8:9.

Everyone blessed with a godly mother can supply an abundance of illustrations to support this typification!

IV. THE PATIENCE OF A CHRISTIAN MOTHER TYPIFIES GOD’S PATIENCE WITH HIS CHILDREN:
"Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus." Romans 15:5.

"The Lord….is long-suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." II Peter 3:9.

The picture entitled "Answered Prayer" depicts the mother of Augustine kneeling in prayer by the couch of her wayward son. A godly mother will never cease praying for her children regardless of what their condition or circumstance might be.
