Sometimes we miss many important and profitable things in life when we overlook their values and the great advantages they offer to us. Chastisement is a very good example of what we are talking about.
There is always the tendency for a believer to despise the chastening of the Lord. Hebrews 12:5 was not written without a purpose, but rather written to counteract believers’ negative attitude concerning God’s chastisement. The Bible tells us not to despise the chastening of the Lord.
Comfort-oriented believers react indifferently every time chastisement comes to their lives. Some are not even bothered by their sins and accountability. They desire blessing from God, but despise His correction. The Bible tells us that chastening is for our own profit and it is God’s way of leading His children to Christ-likeness.
The heavy hands of afflictions squeeze us not to destroy our lives, but to bring the best out of us. This life-changing message will surely guide us to understand the purpose of chastisement.
(I) The Presence Of God’s Love
Hebrews 12:5-6
-Indication of God’s love
(II) Blessing From God
Hebrews 12:5-6 Psalm 94:12-14
-Should not be despised
He who despises the chastening of the Lord belittles the blessing of God.
(III) The Clarity Of Believers’ Legitimacy
Hebrews 12:7-8
-Important proof
(IV) The Spiritual Profit
Hebrews 12:9-11
-Spiritual education
-Sanctification
-Spiritual training
Most people, even professing believers, have the inclination of desiring material profit more than spiritual gain. Sad to say, but it’s true. God wants to give the best for His children, but on our part, we must realize that spiritual blessings are the best for us. Through chastisement, we are led to be partakers of God’s holiness. What a blessing to ponder this in our hearts.

1. Louis Butterfield says...
I am interested in practical ways in which God chastises someone today. For example, a non-believer engages in the drug culture and her baby is born deformed. At the same time, a believer, who is trying her best to serve God and has never engaged in the drug culture has a baby and her baby is born deformed too. How does one know what is chastisement by God, the work of Satan or just an outcome that is purely accidental?
