WARNING SIGNS ON THE ROAD TO JUDGMENT

3/19/06 Mark 6:53-56; 7:1-24a S__L__R__

1. Young Preacher 1st Serm at New Church – 2nd Coming

a. very dramatic presentation – forgot next pt.

b. backed up –rushed forward – Jesus “I’m Coming’

c. still blank -w. more force – nothing;

d. rushed forward- hammered pulpit –

much to his surprise - pulpit fell forward &

tumbled into the lap of chairman Decon’s

e. that’s alright – you warned me three times I

should have listened.

2. Many Warning signs

a. Traffic – medical – relationships – equipment

I. BLESSINGS WITHOUT OBEDIENCE 6:43-56

A. Shunned His Message - occurs right after John 6:60-61 (KJV)

B. Sought His Blessings

1. What wonderful God we serve Lk 6:35c

…for He is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil

2. When we take God’s blessings w/o obeying His

commands

II. RITUALS WITHOUT POWER 7:1-6

A. Unified in their Purpose

1. ‘came together’ – join together - common goal

a. outwardly appeared same as every one else

b. ‘unto Him’

2. ‘they found fault’ – find what you’re looking

a. spiritual gift of criticism

b. feed on each others negativism

B. Unbending in their Passion v. 3

1. ‘holding the tradition of the elders’

a. 5x’s Jesus referred to Tradition b. TRADITION TRUTH

2. OT Priest -wash their hands prior to Worship

a. Utensils of worship -clean prior to using

b. Principle – Clean when we approach God!!!!!

3. Made Set of Rules -Understand & Keep Command

a. “What Do You Think?” – “What Did He Say”

b. “We’ve never done it this way before!”

4. Examples of Tradition –Law >keep Sabbath holy

Tradition said:

a. No looking in a mirror because - might see

a gray hair & be tempted to pluck = work

b. Could not wear false teeth- fell out

tempted to pick up = work

c. Carrying burdens forbidden – You could not

carry a handkerchief, but you could wear a

handkerchief; if upstairs and wanted to

carry down stairs could tie it around your

neck & walk down; untie & blow nose!

d. Careful where you spit- on the dirt and

scuffed it w/foot you were cultivating land

= work

No Muslim would dare enter a mosque without inhaling water thru his nose and spitting it out his mouth; hands and feet must be thoroughly washed in water so that the uncleanness of the street could be washed away.

No Baptist would dare light up a cigarette; pop a top; sit down w/playboy – in Church

C. Unreal in their Pursuit V. 6

1.hypocrites – play actor; one wearing a mask

a. speaking- does not believe what saying

b. just lines or acting a part; no reality

2. Quotes Isa. 29:13-14 Message

13 The Master said: "These people make a big show of saying the right thing, but their hearts aren’t in it. Because they act like they’re worshiping me but don’t mean it, 14 I’m going to step in and shock them awake, astonish them, stand them on their ears. The wise ones who had it all figured out will be exposed as fools. The smart people who thought they knew everything will turn out to know nothing."

A. Defeated Lives Vs. 7

1. ‘In vain’ no purpose; like gnawing of a rat;

2. presence of God -all see unwashed hands

3. Come to church & all they do is complain

a. to hot-cold-loud-long; didn’t speak to me

4. End of ver.se –

a. don’t get into heaven head 1st!- HEART 1st

b. bottom line Christians – Not can we do it?

afford it? But Is He In It?

B. Dangerous Legacy Vs. 8-13

1. Sin is always progressive –

a. vs. 8 Laying aside

b. vs. 9 you reject

c. vs. 13 making word of God of none effect

2. They knew the truth-

a. children & grand children did not!!

2 Timothy 3

For men will be lovers of themselves,

… lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of

God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying

its power. And from such people turn away!

IV. RELIGION WITHOUT RIGHTEOUSNESS Vs.14-23

A. Presentation more Important than Revelation

1. Vs. 21 begins with the Root of the Problem

a. then exposes the Fruit of the problem!!!!

2. Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of

it are the issues of life.

Proverbs 23:7

7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he:

Eat and drink, says he to you; but his heart

is not with you.
