Good morning, dear friends. It's a joy to gather with you today, as we turn our hearts and minds toward the Word of God. The Scriptures are a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path, guiding us in our walk with the Lord. We're not merely looking at words on a page, but we're engaging with the living and active Word of God, which is sharper than any two-edged sword.
Today, we find ourselves in the book of Judges, chapter 16, verse 19. The Scripture reads,
"After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him."
This passage speaks of the mighty Samson, a man of incredible strength and power, yet, like all of us, susceptible to the pitfalls of comfort, bad decisions, and unwise choices. We all, like Samson, have found ourselves in places of comfort that were not beneficial, have made decisions we later regretted, and have chosen resting places that were far from restful.
In the story of Samson, we see a man of great strength lulled into a false sense of security. He was comfortable, at ease, resting in the lap of Delilah. But this was not a place of rest. It was a place of danger. It was a bed of comfort that led to his downfall.
We too can find ourselves in similar situations: We can become so comfortable in our circumstances that we fail to see the danger lurking. We can be so at ease in our routines that we fail to notice the pitfalls around us. We can be so relaxed in our habits that we fail to recognize the traps set for us.
Comfort: Comfort can be a good thing. It can provide rest, rejuvenation, and relaxation. But it can also be a trap. It can lull us into a false sense of security, blind us to the dangers around us, and lead us down a path of destruction. We must be careful not to let our guard down. We must be vigilant, always on the lookout for the snares of the enemy. We must be discerning, able to distinguish between true rest and false comfort. The story of Samson is a cautionary tale for us. It serves as a reminder of the dangers of comfort and the importance of vigilance. It teaches us that we must be careful where we lay our heads, for not all resting places are safe.
The nature of comfort itself: Comfort is not inherently bad. In fact, it's something we all seek. We look for comfort in our homes, in our relationships, in our jobs. It's a natural human desire. But when comfort becomes our ultimate goal, it can lead us astray. It can make us complacent, lazy, and unresponsive to the needs of others. It can make us forget our purpose and lose sight of our goals.
The role of discernment: Discernment is the ability to judge well. It's the ability to see things as they really are, not as we wish them to be. It's the ability to distinguish between truth and falsehood, between right and wrong. Without discernment, we can easily fall into the trap of comfort. We can be lulled into a false sense of security, blind to the dangers around us.
The importance of vigilance: Vigilance is the state of being constantly alert, watchful, and ready to act. It's the opposite of complacency. It's the antidote to comfort. Without vigilance, we can easily fall into the trap of comfort. We can be lulled into a false sense of security, blind to the dangers around us.
The power of choice: We have the power to choose where we find our comfort. We can choose to find our comfort in the things of this world, or we can choose to find our comfort in God. The choice is ours. But we must be careful, for the choices we make have consequences.
