what is in a name
word translation. Now lets ascribe a name to each verse or to a set of verses.
Wonderful (1-2)
What a terrible thing it is what you are in darkness and you cannot see where you are going or what you are doing. What a terrible thing to think that this is all there is to life: disappointment, depression, sorrow and no hope for tomorrow. It is not so wonderful to think that all we have is what this old world has to offer. This name wonderful was not given to HIM by GOD but rather those who knows what HE has done for them call HIM wonderful.
Isaiah calls HIM wonderful because HE is the one that gave light to his nation. HE is the one who delivered his nation from sin and destruction. HE is called wonderful because HE became flesh and dwelt among you and I. HE is called wonderful because HE liberates me from sin, death and hell. I call HIM wonderful because HE died on a cross to set me free. I call HIM wonderful because when all is said and done I know I have won the victory because HE is WONDERFUL in the future when HE places Satan under lock and key in hell, forever and ever.
Counselor (3)
Here is where some believe that Isaiah skips the church age and goes on to the second coming and this is where I say it becomes a double prophecy. It is JESUS that multiplies the nations, increases their gladness, and it is in HIS presence we are glad, it is because of HIM that we rejoice and divide our harvest or spoil. HE is called counselor because it was HE that was in the beginning when GOD said let US make man in OUR image. It was JESUS who GOD talked with and discussed things with. It is by HIM that we know what GOD expects from us. It is by HIM that we know what GOD looks like and how to know GOD more. It is by HIS counsel that we know how to treat our brothers and sisters. It is by HIS counsel that we know what is best for us.
Mighty GOD (4-5)
The strong army of the Assyrian would boast as to how they imposed their enemies with burdens. The nation of Israel was weak as are our flesh. It is only through a Mighty GOD that we shall be freed from our bondage of Satan, sin and death. No matter what you are going through my GOD is mightier than all and will free you and impose HIS yoke upon those who oppress you. The thing Satan hates most is to be reminded what his future holds and here Isaiah reminds him of his past defeats and reminds him what is going to happen.
The battle is the LORD’S because HE is the only one that can defeat Satan. We are but flesh and blood and cannot see the powers of darkness. We do not see the principalities of the dark. We need to take our problems to the MIGHTY GOD who sees all and knows all so that HE can deliver us today as well as for in the future. This verse, verse 5, is also referring to the future. Because Satan is the prince of the air for now he has reign in this world for this time and because he is cause havoc he will one day pay his dues. He maybe mighty now but not mighty enough.
Eternal FATHER & Prince of Peace (7)
In that this scripture is a double prophecy we know that JESUS did come as a child and HE did come through the line of David but HE did not sit on the throne of David and this is because HIS kingdom is not of this world. HIS kingdom is an eternal spiritual one.
Being the eternal FATHER is hard to explain because HE is the father but this is not referring to the GODHEAD.
