11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
13 Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
This is the day when we switched from Central Standard Time...
to Daylight Savings Time
So todayís sermon is about "time".
It amazes me how time has flown by!
Iím 60 years old now!
Iím an old man now!
I not only have children, but also grandchildren!
Sometimes I wonder where the time has gone.
I recall when Dad was a young father raising his sons.
Now, heís gone!
I recall when Mom was a young mother raising her sons.
Now, sheís an elderly woman struggling with many ailments!
My Dadís body is buried at Graceland Cemetery in Albion, Illinois.
When my mother dies, her body will be buried next to him.
Their tombstone carries pictures that relate to their lives.
On Dadís side is the inscription of the U.S. Postal Service
for he served as a Postmaster for __ years.
On my motherís side is an engraving of Big Ben.
As most of you know, Mom was born and raised in England.
She grew up seeing Ben Ben...
and listening to the sounds of that great landmark.
Are you familiar with Big Ben in London?
Big Ben is a 13 1/2-ton bell attached to a 5-ton clock
in the tower of the Houses of Parliament in London.
This is the worldís largest 4-faced, chiming clock
and the 3rd largest free-standing clock tower in the world.
It celebrates its 150th birthday in 2009.
Built in 1859, it is famous for its accuracy.
But several years ago scientists determined
that in 20 years the clock
had gained 1 second on Godís celestial time.
Godís celestial time?
Yes, thatís exactly what it is.
You see, the sun & stars & planets move so precisely in their orbits
that scientists gauge the precision of our time-keeping clocks
by celestial movements.
But back to Big Ben, how did they fix it?
How were they able to adjust the clock
to keep it from gaining 1 second every 20 years?
They did it by attaching a coin about the size of a penny
to the top of the giant pendulum.
And now it is in absolute accord with Godís celestial clock.
But Godís greatest measuring piece is not His celestial clock.
It is His Word!
And Godís word is all wound up and ticking away.
And when we begin to measure ourselves by Godís standards,
Iím convinced that, just like Big Ben,
weíll find adjustments that we need to make, too.
Today, we adjusted our clocks for Daylight Savings Time.
Perhaps itís also time to adjust our lives!
Romans 13:11-14 says:11 And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand.
