Summary: Three aspects of Pilate’s question.

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH JESUS, WHO IS CALLED THE CHRIST?

TEXT: MATTHEW 27:11-26

FOCAL VERSE : MATTHEW 27:22

I. SETTING: The events before Christ was lead away to be crucified.

1) Upper Room

2) Garden of Gethsemane

3) On trail before the sanhedrin

4) Brought to the governor

5) Three aspects of this question:

II. IT IS A PERSONAL QUESTION

What shall I do, then with Jesus who is called the Christ?

1) Pilate tried to push off making this decision.

a) He wanted someone else to make the decision. (He sent Jesus to Herod)

b) He wanted the crowd to make the decision

c) He wanted nothing to do with Jesus. (vs 24)

1) This morning you might be just like that.

2) You want nothing to do with Jesus.

c) Ultimately He had to make a decision.

d) Same with us... What will you do with Jesus, who is called the Christ?

2) The influences surrounding him.

a) The persuasion of the crowd - We tend to decide based on majority (vs. 15)

b) The persuasion of his wife - She told him, “Have nothing to do with this man” (vs19)

c) We allow those closes to us to decide for us.

d) This is decision that YOU must make.

III. IT IS A QUESTION THAT DEMANDS ACTION

What will you DO with Jesus?

1) Some of us have already made that decision.

2) The rest of us this morning, will make a decision.

a) you will either receive Christ or you will reject Christ.

b) You will either obey Him or disobey Him.

c) You will either confess Christ as Lord and Savior or deny Him.

IV. IT IS A QUESTION ABOUT JESUS

What shall I do, then with Jesus who is called the Christ?

1) This is the most important decision that you will ever make in life

2) No other decision is as important as this one.

3) All other decisions...

a) About what college you will attend

b) Who you will marry in life

c) Where you will work

d) What kind of car you will buy

e) Career decisions

4) Those decisions are temporal... this one is eternal.

5) This is a question that every person must answer.

6) It is a decision about Jesus.

a) Not about church,

b) Not about religious ceremony

c) Not about Rules or regulations

d) Not about doing good deeds

V. CONCLUSION: THE RESULT OF PILATE’S DECISION

1) The two prisoners (vs 17)

a) Barabbas - A murderer

b) Christ - Innocent, sinless

2) The means of crucifixion

a) The most cruelest form of execution

b) reserved for criminals , slaves, low lifes.

3) Barabbas deserved to be crucified.

4) We see ourselves in Barabbas

a) We might not be a murderer, but the Bible say’s “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.”

b) We deserve death. - “For the wages of sin is death.”

5) Christ took not only the place of Barabbas, He took the place for us.

6) Barabbas was set free... This morning you too can be set free.
