Sermon:
“THE EARTH IS THE LORD’S, AND ALL IT CONTAINS, THE WORLD AND THOSE WHO DWELL IN IT. 2 FOR HE HAS FOUNDED IT UPON THE SEAS, AND ESTABLISHED IT UPON THE RIVERS. 3 WHO MAY ASCEND INTO THE HILL OF THE LORD? OR WHO MAY STAND IN HIS HOLY PLACE? 4 HE WHO HAS CLEAN HANDS AND A PURE HEART, WHO HAS NOT LIFTED UP HIS SOUL TO FALSEHOOD, AND HAS NOT SWORN DECEITFULLY. 5 HE SHALL RECEIVE A BLESSING FROM THE LORD AND RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM THE GOD OF HIS SALVATION. 6 THIS IS THE GENERATION OF THOSE WHO SEEK HIM, WHO SEEK THY FACE, -EVEN JACOB. (SELAH) 7 LIFT UP YOUR HEADS, O GATES! AND BE LIFTED UP, O ANCIENT DOORS! THAT THE KING OF GLORY MAY COME IN! 8 WHO IS THE KING OF GLORY? THE LORD STRONG AND MIGHTY, THE LORD MIGHTY IN BATTLE. 9 LIFT UP YOUR HEADS, O GATES! AND LIFT THEM UP, O ANCIENT DOORS, THAT THE KING OF GLORY MAY COME IN! 10 WHO IS THIS KING OF GLORY? THE LORD OF HOSTS, HE IS THE KING OF GLORY.” (SELAH)

Psalm 24 asks a question that from the beginning of time is the most important question a man can ask himself.

The reason it is so important, is that because of our sin nature we tend to forget the answer; and it is being mindful of the answer to this question that helps us order our lives and puts all of the events and circumstances of this life into perspective.

The question: “Who is the King of Glory?”

Well, first of all, WHAT is the King of Glory I mean, what does that term mean?

We all know what a king is. Here in America it doesn’t strike us in the same way as for a person in a country that has always been led by a king. But think about it. A true king has all the power and authority. He sends out his decrees, and all across his kingdom, no matter how vast and populated it is, all of his subjects obey.

In a kingdom with a good and fair king, obedience isn’t just an obligation; it is a joy and a privilege. When people love and trust their king they want to obey, and they are willing to fight to the death to support their king and preserve his kingdom. They are faithful to him in his presence, and when they are far away, and even when he is far away on a crusade to a distant land.

It doesn’t matter to them where he is; he is their king, and they serve him.

What does the Psalm mean by “glory”? In this case it means ’abundance’ and ’honor’. So the King of Glory is the supreme ruler of Heaven and all of creation. He is the King over all kings; and He is divinely just and fair and good. His decrees are righteous, His judgments are fair and final, and He loves His subjects enough to die for them.

See what it says about Him in the first 2 verses of the Psalm? The earth is His, and all it contains. He established it in its place; indeed, He is the owner and controller of all. Then, in the last three verses, the Psalmist tells us the Lord is mighty in battle and close to His people. Our protector and our salvation. Who is the King of Glory? The Lord, Jesus Christ, that’s Who!

The One who is and was and who is to come. The Lamb that was slain, and the Lion who now reigns. The One death could not keep, and evil cannot keep back. He is the King, who goes to and fro throughout His creation at will and unhindered; and He is coming back for His subjects, to take them with Him to His glorious abode. The Celestial Kingdom. He has promised; He will do it. “Jesus Christ
