Why We Need Each Other
with opportunities to live out your faith.
Practically speaking, why is it better to walk with others in life?
3 Reasons: (you might want to just jot these down in the margin)
1) It’s safer.
It’s safer when you walk with others through life. There’s safety in numbers. Whether it’s walking in a dark alley in the inner-city or out in the countryside, it’s still safer to have someone walking with you. It’s a whole lot less risky.
Now, some might disagree here. Maybe the words to a Simon and Garfunkel song (a real oldie!) express your thoughts:
A winters day
In a deep and dark December;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I’ve built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
Its laughter and its loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
Don’t talk of love,
But I’ve heard the words before;
It’s sleeping in my memory.
I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.
Sure, you feel no pain. Sure, you never cry. But have you lived?
Have you fulfilled God’s purpose for your existence? No!
God desires that we be involved in relationship with others.
We need each other to walk with us.
It’s not only safer, it’s also...
2) It’s supportive
It keeps you from giving up.
When other people are walking with you, they keep you going.
Listen to this old Zambian proverb:
“When you run alone, you run fast. But when you run together, you run far.”
The life that we are called to live is not a 50-yard dash!
It’s a marathon! And we had better be prepared to run far.
And to do that we need each other.
The geese are going to start flying south for the winter now.
Why do they fly in V-formation?
It’s because they can fly farther in that formation because it creates an updraft and they don’t get as tired when they fly together like that.
When we fly, when we walk, when we run through life together, we’re a whole lot less tired when we walk with others.
It’s safer. It’s supportive. It’s also just plain...
3) It’s smarter
You’ll learn a whole lot more when you go through life with other people close to you. You will learn from them. You will learn from their mistakes. It’s just plain smarter to walk together through this life with others.
Now, I want you to look at Genesis 2:18. Read it with me:
“It is not good for man to be alone.”
Who’s talking here? God
When did He say it? Right after creating Adam.
Here everything was perfect, right?
I mean, here Adam is in the Garden of Eden!
And yet, God says, “It is not good for man to be alone.”
And so, God created two groups:
He gave you a physical family and a spiritual family.
And actually, your spiritual family is going to last a whole lot longer than your physical one because it’s going to go on for ever and ever and eternity.
God gave you a safety net, it’s His family.
