Summary: Too many of us non-Pentecostal type churches seem to fear the Holy Spirit. Let us embrace Him!

Why We’re Not Afraid Of The Holy Spirit

John 14:16-18

1. We Are Not Afraid Because We Understand His Origin

*We have Him as an _answer to the prayer_ of Christ. 14:16

*We receive Him as a _fulfillment to a promise_ 14:17

*We realize His indwelling is a _relationship_ and not an _experience_

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. Romans 8:9

2. We Are Not Afraid Because We Rejoice In His Mission

A picture of the Holy Spirit’s Mission in Genesis 24

A Father (Abraham) sends His Servant on a mission to

*He is sent by the father on behalf of the _son_

*Secure a _virgin bride_ for his son (Gen 24:1-10, Eph. 5:27)

*He gave _gifts_ to the bride (Gen 24:22, 1 Cor. 12:4)

*He _glorified the son_ as he spoke to the bride (Gen. 24:34-49,

John 16:14)

*He completes his task as he _escorts & presents_ the bride to

the son (Gen. 24:57-67, Philp. 1:6)

3. We Are Not Afraid Because He Makes The Difference

*He seals us (Eph. 4:30)

_protects_ & _identifies_

*He empowers us (Acts 1:8)

_to be useful for God_

Three Keys To Spirit Power

1. Be _filled_ with the Spirit

means to be under the _influence_

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit Eph. 5:18

2. _Walk_ in the Spirit

means to be constantly _conscious_ of His presence

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Gal. 5:16

3. Let the Spirit _flow_

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7

I believe it was Gordon Fee who quoted a colleague who said:

“Without the Holy Spirit, there is no alive church but only a dead carcass or memory of better days, or regrets of what might have been. The only power that can raise churches from the dead is the Holy Spirit”
