Summary: Jesus did the works of the Father and has now commissioned His church to do the same in His name.

Praying For the Sick (Part 2)

Luke 4:18

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, (KJV)

Introduction: In part 1 we gave Scripture supporting God’s commission to the Church to heal the sick. In this portion we want to see some of the dynamics involved in this process.

I. Praying and anointing with oil in the Name of the Lord

James 5:14-15

14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. (KJV)

A. Is any sick among you?

1. This question is to the church

B. Let him call for the elders (why not everyone?)

1.Elders are leaders and examples of God’s love and faith are able to pray the prayer of faith

C. Anoint with oil

1. Oil is representative of the Spirit

2. The Holy Spirit gives gifts of healings (1 Cor. 12)

D. The prayer of faith

1. Will save (make whole) the sick

A. The Lord will raise him up

1a. Forgive sins

II. Speaking (Preaching) the Word

A. The Centurion recognized “authority” and the power of authority spoken

Matt 8:8

8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. (KJV)

B. Jesus cast our devils with “His Word” (again authority)

Matt 8:16

16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: (KJV)

III. Rebuking unclean spirits

Luke 9:41-42

41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.

42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

(KJV)

A. In this portion of Scripture we see that sickness may sometimes be caused by demonic forces. Here we see a need for spiritual discernment. Jesus saw the cause and simply rebuked the workings of this devil and healed the child.

IV. Laying Hands on the Sick

A. God sometimes transfers His power and authority through the hands of His people

Mark 16:18

18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (KJV)

Acts 8:19

19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. (KJV)

V. Healing by the Gifts of the Spirit

1 Cor 12:8-11

8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

(KJV)

A. The Holy Spirit works through some to heal certain sicknesses

1. I believe that we have taken this portion of scripture and negated too many healings because some may not have these “giftings” and fail to exercise faith in the aforementioned modes of God’s healing. Again, God heals through faith in His Word and the power of His Name. Some members of the body have an additional enabling from the Holy Spirit mentioned here in this passage. No, not all have this but we have the Word and Jesus Name, hallelujah!

In Conclusion:

In conclusion:

1. Be led by the Word and the Spirit

2. Pray with love and faith

3. Believe that you receive what you ask for

4. Be bold in your witness

5. Give all glory to God
