The Sower and the Seed
Luke 8:5-15
Intro: Here we have the parable of the Sower and the Seed. Jesus used this parable to teach about mankind’s reception of God’s Word.
There are many that hear God’s Word, but very few who live it. Some accept it for a short time, only to allow sin and self to choke out the Word.
There are others that hear the Word and keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
We are going to examine this parable in 3 parts.
1) The Sower and the Soil; vs 5-8; 2) The Savior and the Story; vs 9-10 and 3)
The Story and Symbols; vs 11-15
I. The Sower and the Soil - vs 5-8.
A. Vs 5 says, “a sower went out to sow his seed.” The sower is God the Father.
His Word remains the same. It will never pass away.
God has given us His Holy Word. He speaks to us through His Word.
In vs 5-8 we see what kind of soil is mentioned.
There are 4 types of soil:
1) Wayside -vs 5 It was stepped on, squished, and the birds of the air devoured it.
2) Rocky ground - vs 6 It grew quickly and died.
3) Among the thorns - vs 7 It grew, but so did the thorns and they choked it.
4) Good ground - vs 8 It grew and brought forth much fruit.
“When Jesus had finished saying this, he cried out, ‘You have ears, then listen.’”
II. The Savior and the Parable - vs 9-10
A. Interest - vs 9 His disciples ask the meaning.
B. Interpretation - vs 10 “God has granted you to know the meaning of these parables, for they tell a great deal about the kingdom of God.”
God wants us to understand His Word. And He gives us His Holy Spirit to show us great truths in His Word.
C. Ignorance - vs 10 “But these crowds hear the words and do not understand, just as the prophets predicted.”
2 Cor 4:4 says, “The gospel is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.”
Satan has a lot of people blinded and fooled. They don’t know the Truth.
2 Timothy 3:7 says, “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of truth.”
Christ is the Truth. Satan is a liar.
Paul speaks of people not seeking God in Romans 3:11. “There is none that seeketh after God.”
Psalm 14:1 says, “The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.”
But Isaiah 55:6-7 tells us to “seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near; Let the wicked forsake his ways, and the unrighteous
man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”
Psalm 34:4 says, “I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”
The true Christian is not known for how much he knows about God, it’s not an intellectual knowledge.
