Summary: Who is a man that the most Supreme God would even recognize him. This message deals with God’s great love toward mankind

WHO AM I

I Chronicles 17:16-27

Intro: In the reading of these scriptures we read how David desires to build a house for the Ark of the Covenant. However, the Lord came to Nathan the prophet and gave him instructions to tell David that he would not allow him to build the temple. In verses 11 and 12 we see how God gave David a promise that he would allow his seed to build a house and will stablish his throne forever. Of course he is talking about Solomon. I have often had doubts about the condition of Solomon after he slipped into idolatry, but after I read this verse I realized that God had mercy on Solomon. Nathan delivers the message to David and we find David immediately sat before the in prayer. During the opening remarks of his prayer David shows his humility before the Lord and realizes how God is promising to do greater things for David than what he could see. David’s prayer turns to one of praise and gratitude. David was grateful that God would even recognize who he was after all of sinfulness. I want to preach on the subject; WHO AM I?

I. WHO AM I THAT THE GOD OF HEAVEN WOULD EVEN WANT TO KNOW MY NAME

A. (John 10:3) To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice; and he calleth his own sheep by name; and leadeth them out

B. (John 10:4) And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice

C. Thank God I know his voice but better than that I am glad he knows my name

D. And no only does he know it he has it recorded in the Book of Life

E. (Revelation 21:27) And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life

F. The Lord showed me something that brought great joy and comfort to my soul

G. Immediately, in the next chapter here is what you read

H. (Revelation 22:1) And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb

I. That verse is personal. “He shewed me…”

J. WHO AM I that God would even care to keep my name in his presence.

II. WHO AM I THAT GOD WOULD WANT TO FEEL MY HURT

A. (I Peter 5:7) Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you

B. Don’t think for one minute when you bow your head in hurt and sorrow that he doesn’t feel every bit of it.

C. Don’t think that when tears of pain well up in your eyes and stream down your face that he doesn’t want to wipe away

D. Don’t think for one minute that when you are laying in the bed at night and your are troubled and tears take the place of sleep that he doesn’t feel for you

E. (Luke 12:7) But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows

F. (Matthew 10:29) Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? And one of them shall not fall on the ground without your father

G. If God knows every time a sparrow falls from the sky you better believe he knows every time your heart breaks

H. WHO AM I that God would care enough for me to feel my hurt

III. WHO AM I THAT THE DAY STAR WOULD EVEN DARE SHINE ON ME

A. (2 Peter 1:19) We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts

B. There was a time when the inside of my heart was as dark as night. Void and empty would not adequately describe how I felt

C. The road was dark, the end was dark with no light to guide me

D. But one day the Word of God offered some light. Though the path was still dim I could finally see where I was going

E. The more Word I heard the more light it would give until one day I took heed

F. Then that light rose in my heart and became a star. That darkness was gone. The sun is a star and even though we can’t see it I guarantee you it is shining.

G. WHO AM I that the day star would shine on me and light my dark path.

IV. WHO AM I THAT THE EYES WHO CANNOT LOOK UPON SIN WOULD LOOK ON MY LOWLY ESTATE

A. (Psalm 8:4) What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him?

B. (Psalm 8:5) For thou has made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour

C. To think that God would even consider looking down on man in his sinful state. Beat down, filthy, scarred and mangled from the affects of sin

D. But he sent His only begotten Son so that we could rise from the ashes of sorrow and he takes great delight in it

E. WHO AM I that the Sovereign God of heaven would look down in love just to watch me rise up to glorify him

V. WHO AM I THAT THE GOD WHO CALMS THE RAGING STORM ON THE SEA WOULD CALM THE STORM IN ME

A. (Mark 4:35-41) The disciples were tossed in a great storm and they were scared and they went and got Jesus and asked him, Master carest thou not that we perish?

B. Jesus arose and went to the stern of the boat and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea; Peace be still. And the wind ceased and there was a great calm

C. There have been many times in my life when I have been tossed by storms in my life and the waves of worry and the sea of sorrow has covered me to the point I couldn’t see where I was going.

D. I have gone to Jesus and said Lord carest thou not that I perish.

E. And I have been there when he has arose and stood on the stern of Heaven and rebuked the winds and said peace be still. I know what it is like to have that great calm.

F. I have been in storms where I was completely out of the boat and I was sinking and could not see the way to go

G. And I have heard Jesus call out through the rain and say; Be not afraid, It is I. And thou I couldn’t see him I could hear his voice and I knew the way to go.

H. Finally, I would feel a hand reach down and pull me back into the boat

Close: So who are we that God would do this for? I tell you who we are, we are His. And he will do those things for us that no one else can because of his love.
