By His Stripes We Are Healed
Good Friday Sermon
Isa. 53:4-10a

Introduction:
A Isaiah 53 is the heart of this book, the Gospel, & the redemptive history of man.
1 We see a picture of the suffering Servant.
a The Good Shepherd laying down his life for His sheep.
b A prophecy that points ahead 700 years to Calvary.
2 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities Isaiah 53:5 (NASB)
a Jews didn’t practice crucifixion, the Romans did
b The Jews practiced stoning
aa 700 years out, the crucifixion was on God’s heart.
B Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth; like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; and as for His generation, who considered that He was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due? 9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, yet He was with a rich man in His death,
Because He had done no violence, nor was there any deceit in His mouth. 10 But the LORD was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief; if He would render Himself as a guilt offering Isaiah 53:4-10 (NASB)
C Let’s look at two questions surrounding the 53rd chapter of Isaiah about those stripes that heal.
I What do we need healed from?
A Surely our griefs (sickness) He Himself bore
1 Our souls are sick with a disease we can’t sure.
a For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment 2 Peter 2:4 (NASB)
b We have sin that has infected our souls.
2 The infection is there because we made some choices to engage in sin.
a All of us like sheep have gone astray... (God drew lines for us not to cross, but we did)
b each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him. (Our decision)
B Our disease has many symptoms.
1 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.
a Grief, sorrows, transgressions, iniquities...
b We can get lost in the personal pronoun of "our" and fail to see our individual contribution, responsibility to the sin disease.
2 What do we need healed from? The fatal disease of sin.
We can all agree that each of us has the same disease, now let’s look at the cure that heals us all (transitional sentence).
II How do we get healed?
A V. 5 reminds us that by His stripes we are healed.
1 We are the reason He was subject to the stripes to begin with.
a We colored outside the lines, broke God’s law, when you break the law it demands punishment.
aa Imprisonment, fine, even death
bb Our offense brings a death penalty
b God is holy, just, and must punish sin.
2 The only way a lawbreaker can be at peace with the law is to suffer the punishment that the law demands.
a Our punishment is death, but Jesus (who kept the Law perfectly) took the beating that belonged to us.
b In one gulp on Calvary He swallowed all the horrors of hell. In one mouthful at Golgotha He drank damnation dry.
B Because He took our place, we now have peace with God, our souls have been healed, and we cannot be condemned by God’s law (there’s power in the blood).
C Jesus took the disease, the prognosis that belonged to us, and gave us peace & healing.
Conclusion
A Please see your part in the Good Friday story.
1 Surely my griefs He Himself bore, and my sorrows He carried; yet I esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for my transgressions, He was crushed for my iniquities; the chastening for my well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging I am healed.
2 Each of you was given a heart when you came in, take it out now, please.
a Ask God’s Holy Spirit to speak to your heart about a confession of sin you need to make tonight.
b Write your brief confession in a prayer on the heart.
3 "By His stripes we are healed..."
a I invite you to come and kneel, reflect, & pray at the altar.
b Paint a stripe on the cross as you claim Jesus’ healing blood in your life.
4 After that, put your confession in the paper shredder & thank the Lamb of God for not only taking away the sins of the world, but for taking away your sins.
a Return to your seats
b Pray
