Summary: This message shows what God has done for us through salvation in Jesus Christ.

What the God has done for Me

Psalm 40.1-3

The first thing I want us to see in the text tonight, is the FACT OF SIN—“Out of an horrible pit.”

I don’t suppose anyone knows the exact ingredients of sin. But Sin is the failure to do the whole will of God.

1 John 3.4 says, “Sin is the transgression of the law.”

Sin is a stab in the heart of God. It robs God of all that is due Him. Man sins in three distinct ways:

First—Thought Sins—

We all experience them. Christians ask, How can we keep sinful thoughts from entering our minds?

Thoughts are like birds, we cannot stop them from flying overhead, but we can stop them from making their nest in our hair.

We can gain control of our thoughts by focusing on Christ and the things that make up God’s Kingdom. Prayer, Bible Study, Church attendance, these things can help curb the thought sins.

Second is Word Sins. Jesus warned that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment (Matt 12.36).

Unkept promises, blasphemies, gossip, insincere words that erect false fronts—these are just plain idle words.

It is what we call LIP service today! Jesus knew about these type people 2000 years ago, when He said in Matt 15.8: “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”

The third way in which we sin is Deed sins.

If we call ourselves Christians, we must act like Christians. It is a sin to claim Christianity and not practice it.

It is a SIN to say you are a Christian and not come to church. It is a sin to say you are a Christian and not Pray. It is a sin to say that you are a Christian and not Read the Word.

Sin is a universal FACT.

The Second thing I want us to see from the text tonight is the FACT of SALVATION—“He brought me up.”

The heading of this Psalm in the Hebrew, credits David with writing this Psalm.

David knew the power and domination of sin in his life. But he also knew that deliverance from sin is possible.

He could never free Himself from sin. David needed outside Help for this. He had to call upon the one who had the power to deliver,

and so does every man on the face of the earth. How did David get deliverance? From God.

God reached down to man and met him at his point of greatest need. He then sent His Son to the world of sin, as the Deliverer.

Third, tonight is the FACT OF SAFETY—“And set my feet upon a Rock.”

We know that we belong to God. If we belong to God, then we are safe. There is nothing in this life for the Christian to fear.

Jesus says to have no fear of those who can destroy the body, but fear the one who has the power to destroy both body and soul.

Christians are safe from eternal punishment, we are safe from the Great White Throne Judgment. But...

This safety does not exempt us from chastisement when we sin. We have not been given a blank check to sin!

Fourth is the FACT OF STABILITY—“And establish my goings”

This means that our eternal abode is already set. There is no question once you are saved of where you will spend eternity. Everything is already settled.

We don’t need to worry about it. Salvation has been provided, Christians have appropriated it, and HE has guaranteed us a home in Glory.

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: (Philippians 1:6)

Lastly tonight—there is the FACT OF SUSTAINING JOY—“And HE hath put a new song in my mouth, Even praise unto our God”

The pleasures that this sinful world has to offer, do not satisfy. They provide no lasting joy.

A millionaire wants another million. The alcoholic wants another drink. The drug addict wants another fix.

We could go on and on with the pleasures in this old , but none of them provide lasting joy.

This new song that is put in our mouth by God is produced by a new experience. It is produced by the new man.

A sinner has no praise for God...But the saint, the saved sinner, has such a song.

It is a song that the angels themselves cannot sing because it is the song of the Redeemed.

This is What the Lord has done for ME!
