Summary: There is a small thread that holds the family and society together, it is the love of a Mother.

By Wade Martin Hughes, Sr. Kyfingers@aol.com

Romans 13:7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is

due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

I. THE GOLD THREAD OF A MOTHER’S LOVE TAKES MANY FORMS.

IT MAY BE EVEN BASKET WEAVING.

A. There was a precious lady that her greatest gift to God was her children.

B. THERE WAS A MAN NAMED AMRAM, AND HE MARRIED A GIRL FROM THE TRIBE

OF LEVI.

C. JOCHEBED WAS MARRIED AND FAITHFUL TO AMRAM.

D. SHE LIVED IN A HARD AND EVIL DAY.

JOCHEBED HAD TWO OLDER CHILDREN:

MIRIAM AND AARON.

E. THE LAW WAS PASSED --- KILL THE SONS.

F. SHE LATER HAD A SON NAMED MOSES.

G. SHE DID WHAT SHE COULD: SHE MADE A BASKET OF LOVE AND HOPE!

Exodus 2:3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein;

and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink.

H. JOCHEBED’S GREAT GIFT TO GOD WERE HER FAITHFUL CHILDREN.

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

II. THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE RULES THE WORLD!

A. A Mother has many duties:

To love

To teach

To nurture

To train

B. A MOM’S WORK IS FROM SON UP TO SON DOWN?

Proverbs 31:28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

Ephes. 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

2 Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Romans 13:7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

III. I KNOW SEVERAL SWEET WORDS THAT ARE SWEETER TODAY THAN EVER

IN MY HEART!

A. JESUS MY LORD AND SAVIOR

B. HOME

C. FRIEND

D. HEAVEN

E. HOPE

F. MOTHER

IV. THE GOLDEN THREAD OF A MOTHER’S LOVE.

A. Last week our youngest son was injured. He is a policeman and was in a battle with a Cocaine dealer. He and a Kentucky State Policeman were injured. The police dog attacked the State Police man, and my son hurt his knee going over an eight feet high fence.

B. So I told my wife I would mow our sons 2 acres.

I loaded up my Gravely on the trailer and drove over to our son’s house.

As I was unloading my mower a little bird started singing and running and acting very strange.

C. The little female bird was a killdeer.

Killdeers are a lap winged bird that builds their nest on the ground.

I watched and watched this strange acting bird, do the broken wing dance and it slowly led me away from the nest.

D. This Momma bird was willing to give it’s life for the eggs.

After a several minute search, I found four beautiful colored eggs hidden laying upon the rocks.

E. I sat my bottle of Gator-aide down near the nest to remind me where the nest was hidden.

I carefully mowed around those four eggs, and each time I talked to the Momma bird and assured her I would not bother her, nor would I bother

her precious little eggs.

F. This Momma bird sat hour after endless hours on her little nest.

Her body temperature goes up.

She sweats great drops of moisture over her little new hope of life.

She eats very little and only leaves her nest for a few minutes a day.

G. All the world seems to go by as she gives herself unselfishly for the new generation.

H. This Momma bird was willing to do battle with the three blades of a 60 inch deck to defend her four little eggs.

WHY?

WHAT MAKES THIS LITTLE BIRD SO WILLING TO DIE TO PROTECT

THOSE FOUR LITTLE EGGS?

V. YEARS AGO I WAS HONORED TO BE THE SPEAKER AT A GOLD STAR

MOTHERS DINNER.

A. I saw a young soldier return from Viet Nam in a sealed casket.

I saw a Mother cry and grieve, this young man was her hope.

B. To be a Gold Star Mother --- you had to have lost a child in combat for this great nation.

I watched these precious women still grieve for their hero son or daughter that marched away to war and never returned.

C. I heard one Mother say, she never went to her son’s wedding, she never had a grandchild, that she had given the best thing that she ever had for

this great nation.

VI. I STOOD ON DEATH ROW IN A HUGE PRISON.

A MOTHER’S SON WAS TO DIE AT MIDNIGHT.

Henry Ward Beecher said:

God pardons like a Mother who kisses the offense into everlasting forgetfulness.

A. The Mother demanded to be there with her son as he would face lethal injection at midnight.

The family pleaded with the Mother not to go, so I was to stand with this Mother’s son.

B. At 5 PM I walked this Mother to her car, and she gave me instructions, HURRY BACK AND BE WITH MY SON.

I sat with him until five minutes before midnight.

We talked, we cried, the son was ashamed of the disappointment he had caused his family and especially the heart break he had caused his Momma.

C. Mom had loved her baby son no matter what he had done.

Mom had been with her son during the trial, and for 18 years she had visited with him on Death Row.

On several occasions, we left at 4 am as I took the Mother to see her baby son. We got back home at 4 am the next morning.

This Mom always stood by her son. She never condoned what he did, but she loved her son.

D. Right before the curtain went up, I almost smothered, I thought:

I AM IN THE WRONG ROOM, WHAT WILL OTHERS SAY?

I felt Jesus sweetly whisper to my heart, I AM IN THE ROOM WITH YOU!

At midnight, the curtain went up, I was alone with the Prison Chaplain in a small room to the man’s right and her baby son looked to me and the gold cross I held in my hand.

He had sought forgiveness and was very sorry, we had agreed to meet in heaven with our Mom’s some day!

E. There were state’s witnesses and 12 members of the press across from us.

At his feet were several members of the offended family.

As the offended family’s curtain went up, a lady started crying real hard.

The guilty criminal died in just a few minutes.

I was escorted to my vehicle, and went to the motel room where all the family had gathered around sweet, dear old Mom.

I hugged the little frail woman, I told her what her son told me to say, and we stood there and cried together.

F. At 8 am the next morning, I went to the local funeral home and picked

up the son’s body and I returned home with her precious baby son’s body.

We had his funeral, a few close family members and friends gathered.

G. This precious Mother followed her son all his days and had saved her

life’s savings to bury her son with a Mother’s respect.

H. THERE WAS A GOLD THREAD THROUGH OUT THIS MAN’S SAD HISTORY,

IT WAS HIS MOTHER’S LOVE.

VII. THE POWER OF THE PEN IS SO LIMITED.

GOD’S LOVE AND A TRUE MOTHER’S LOVE WOULD BE HARD TO SEPERATE.

Their love knits people together.

Jude 1:22 And of some have compassion, making a difference:

A. How could we record all of the work a Mother does?

What is the value of a Mom’s kiss or hug?

B. How could there ever be a repayment for all a Mom gives?

C. I have had many great teachers in my life, but I will tell you my Mother

was a great teacher.

VIII. THERE WERE TIMES I THOUGHT I HAD THE MEANEST MOM AND DAD IN THE

WORLD.

A. We had a drug problem at home.

Mom and Dad drug us to school, they drug us to church, and they drug us to the cross.

B. THE GREATEST INHERITANCE I HAVE FROM MY MOM AND DAD IS THE LOVE FOR GOD AND THE LOVE FOR THE CHURCH.

C. Mom taught more than sympathy, she taught me compassion.

D. My older brother and I used to preach to the neighborhood kids and our cousins as we played church.

Our sermons were simple Bible stories that we heard at our Momma’s knee.

E. When my brother was in combat in Viet Nam, my Mom and Dad prayed so hard.

Dad kept preaching and Mom kept praying.

My older brother finished his TOUR OF DUTY and was coming home.

My Dad was to preach that night in Middlesboro, KY.

My brother flew into Knoxville, TN.

My Dad was torn as what to do.

Mom said to Dad, PREACH, GOD HAS BROUGHT OUR SON HOME.

I drove to Knoxville, got my brother and drove him to the church where

Dad was preaching.

I will never forget the hug and love that Mom and Dad extended to God and their son when he came home.

F. I was a Senior in High School in Springfield, Illinois. I went to bed one night.

I was hurt and crying. During the night, I felt something wet.

My younger brother Tim slept on the top bunk.

I thought O, NO!

I was still and realized it was Mom’s tear falling on my arm.

While I was asleep, my Mom knelt by my bed and prayed for me.

I remember hearing these words,

FATHER IF YOU HAVE TO SLIGHT MY SON IN ANY WAY, SLIGHT HIM IN THE THINGS OF THIS WORLD, BUT BLESS HIM SPIRITUALLY TO KNOW YOU IN YOUR FULNESS.

IX. WE TALK ABOUT THE SINS OF THE PARENTS BEING PASSED TO THE CHILDREN, WHY NOT TEACH THE INVERSE?

THE VIRTUES OF THE PARENTS SHALL BE VISITED UPON THE CHILDREN!

A. How could we ever forget the instructions from our Mothers and Fathers?

B. Abraham Lincoln said:

NO MAN IS POOR THAT HAS A GODLY MOTHER!

X. GOD HAS GIVEN US SOME VERY IMPORTANT MOTHERS IN THE BIBLE...

A. Eve --- Mother of all

B. Sarah

C. Hannah --- Samuel --- made a little coat every year

D. Elizabeth --- John the Baptist

E. Mary

F. Eunice --- Beatrice (GRANDMOTHER) --- Timothy

XI. WE HAVE SPIRITUAL MOTHERS AND BROTHERS!

Mark 3:35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother,

and my sister, and mother.

Today we give honor to all those that have helped give life and nurture others.

We thank God for the gold thread of a Mother’s love.

His servant,
