Who’s Job is it?
Good morning. I’m going to start today off with a story another Pastor Brian Bill of Pontiac, Illinois told.
“I heard a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could’ve done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about this, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.”
That story reminds me of the Lords work. It is everybody’s job, and almost nobody does it, but it isn’t somebody that gets angry. It is God who gets angry. Today’s Discussion is going to be about who’s job is it? Some might say it’s the preachers job to spread the word of God. Some excuses I hear are I’m no teacher how would I Spread the word? There are many more excuses, but today lets skip excuses and see who’s job it is to spread God’s word.
The word teach is in 108 different verses in the bible. Today we are only going to go through a few. I am sure in discussion after this we will touch on many more. I like Exodus 18:20 is a good one to start with.
“And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do”
And thou shalt what? Teach that’s what thou shalt do. I like that one because it uses another word there that most people avoid the teaching part because of. Work. Yes as a person devoted to God there is work you must do. Part of that work is share, or teach people of the word of God. Ok Lets jump to Psalms chapter 51 verse 15.
“Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.”
I love how they worded that. Ok I’m going to use the first part there as today’s question to think about. Will I teach transgressors thy ways? I know in that verse they are talking about they are going to teach, but I wanted to get to the question of the day. Today for discussion I want everyone to write down 3 reasons they don’t teach others. Then without just looking up scripture write down 3 reasons why you should teach the Word of God. Don’t worry I have done the same thing about me in the past.
Reasons I don’t teach others.
1. I’d have no clue where to start.
2. That’s why we have churches.
3. I don’t feel like it today.
Yes I used them excuses many times myself in the past. None of them are a good excuse. None of them are valid excuses, but I used them and rationalized in my mind they were good enough. Now onto the reasons I should teach. As I said I am not going to flip threw the Bible for the answers.
1. God wants the world to hear his Word.
2. It is the right thing to do.
3. I want to strive to be more Christ like.
In that list I am going to touch on each one a little bit. In number 1 God wants the world to hear his Word.
How about John 8:25-26
“Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning. I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.”
Actually that also points out number 3 me wanting to be Christ like. But Jesus spread the Word of God to everyone. Wanting the world to hear God’s Word, And I want the world to hear His Word to Because it pleases God. God has given us many gifts And I want to use those gifts to help others know Him.
Lets say you are a child and you like baseball. Your dad gives you a new baseball bat and a new catchers mitt. Wouldn’t you take those gifts out and show your friends, or would you hide your happiness and put the gifts in the closet for only you to see. I know I’d be stopping people in the streets and showing everyone the gifts my dad gave me. Just like I tell everyone about the gifts my Heavenly Father has given me. I want to share the joy. I want others to have this happiness that I have.
Now onto number 2. It is the right thing to do. If God wants his Word spread to the world Then how would it not be the right thing to do. Show your happiness again. Show how God has made your life joyful. That is the first step to number 3, Being more Christ like. When a person see’s a happy person the wonder why you are so happy. Fill them in on it. Gods n secret. God doesn’t want to be a secret.
Ok number 3 be more Christ like. What did Jesus do. He taught. He shared. He went out of his way to make sure people knew his father, And he taught disciples to help him spread the Word. I know it isn’t easy to tell everyone of the Word. Jesus had help. You can teach someone and tell them how spreading God’s word is important. Have them go and teach too.
For all of those who wrote the lists already look at your list of why you don’t teach. Think about that list. Can you see any valid excuse. I am thinking you probably don’t. For those who already help spread the word don’t worry about writing the list. Worry more about are you spreading the word or just bragging that you are a Christian. Yes another thing to think about. I know that statement was harsh but there is a difference between sharing the Word, and bragging or boasting.
Boasting and bragging scares people away from the Word. Makes people feel that you have the holier then thou attitude. I have made the mistake of bragging and boasting in the past so don’t think I am just pointing fingers, or anything like that. I am pointing out a valuable teaching hint. Even I take hints on teaching when I see them.
Today’s closing prayer is going to be a prayer for strength and courage, But before we pray I would just like to thank Pastor Bill That story was the first I had seen of his sermons and it inspired this sermon. Our great Heavenly Father. I pray to you today that you give everyone the courage to spread your word. Give them all the strength to be more like your son Jesus. Guide them. Take there hand and help them become more Christ like. Our dear loving heavenly father today I pray to you in the name of your loving son who died for all our sins Jesus Christ. Amen.
