Summary: The Gospel of John is full of descriptive passages revealing that Jesus is the Son of God. Here are twelve of them and how they apply to our life today.

Jesus is the Son of God, as shown in John 5:15- 47

You guys have heard this the past several weeks, the reason John wrote the Gospel of John was to teach that Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God. Here are 12 more times that John reveals Jesus is the Son of God:

Jesus is the Son of God because…

1. He had the power too heal people.

2. He said God was His Father.

3. He can control whom He gives life too.

4. God has given Jesus His authority to judge people.

5. He must be honored in order to honor God.

6. He was given the same life as God.

7. He has authority to judge people because He became a person.

8. John the Baptist said He was.

9. His work shows that He is.

10. God the Father says He is.

11. The Bible says He is.

12. Moses said He is.

#1. John 5:15 The man [this is the man Jesus healed, who had been an invalid for 38 years] went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

Jesus showed Himself to be the Son of God because he had the power too heal people. Jesus still holds this power today. Many people get discouraged and disenchanted as they wait to be healed, but that is not what we are called to do.

Deuteronomy 7:22 reads, The LORD your God will drive out those nations before you, little by little. You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once, or the wild animals will multiply around you.

When a person comes to know Christ as their personal Savior, there are many traits they need to be healed from: doubt, discouragement, dishonesty, poverty, lying, loneliness, unfaithfulness and more. These are the nations that stand between us and our promised life in Christ. Little by little, the Lord drives these out. Changing us daily, creating a new heart and new mind in us that enables us to walk free from the bondage of sin and its destructive power. If He eliminated them all at once, other, perhaps more deadly traits and behaviors would appear in their place.

In Matthew 12 Jesus said, [When evil returns to a person it says, “I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. Jesus has the power to heal and He knows how to heal and when to heal. If we wait on Him, standing firm in our faith, believing in His power we will see God and we will all be healed.

2. Jesus is the Son of God because He said God was His Father.

John 5:17 Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.”

Romans 8:17 says, “Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”

John 1:12 tells us, “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” The Bible says that as sure as Christ is the Son of God, we too can become sons and daughters of God. I don’t know where you may stand on the Pro-Life issue, but I am completely confident that God does not have abortions and that He will be faithful to complete the work He began in you.

3. Jesus is the Son of God because He can control whom He gives life too.

John 5:21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

4. Jesus is the Son of God because God has given Jesus His authority to judge people.

John 5:22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,

2Corintians 5:10 says, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” We are saved by grace not by works, but our works do matter and our works will be judged and our works will be judged. Is there anything you need to do that you have not done? You need to do it before you die and face the judgment.

John 5:23, that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

5. Jesus is the Son of God because He must be honored in order to honor God.

Hebrews chapter 10 teaches us how, “11 Day after day every priest [stood] and performed his religious duties; again and again he offered the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.” But when a perfect Priest offered himself as the sacrifice, He offered one sacrifice that was accepted for all sins, then the Priest, “12 … sat down at the right hand of God”. The Bible says in Philippians 2:9, “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

John 5:26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself.

6. Jesus is the Son of God because He was given the same life as God. John 11:25 is one of my favorite passages, it says, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.” The reason I like this passage is because Jesus said He was the resurrection, He didn’t say He knew about the resurrection, He is the resurrection, this tells me when we die we not only go to a place but to someone; someone who has been there before and knows the path to life. In John 11 Jesus made this statement to Martha then He asked her a question, “Do you believe this?” When Martha answered yes, Jesus resurrected her brother from the dead. I wonder what would have happen if she had said, No?

I wonder what happens every time we doubt. Every time we don’t pray. I wonder what happens.

7. Jesus is the Son of God because He has authority to judge people because He became a person.

John 5:27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. Hebrews 4:15 says, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.” Last Friday was what the Markets call “Black Friday” because their books are in the black that day. It is the day many people start there Christmas shopping. I am hear to tell you there is nothing Black about Christmas, it is the time of year we remember that God became a Man and salvation became a promise.

John 5:31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid.

Jesus is NOT the Son of God just because He said so. Self-boasting does not work for anyone, even God. After all why do you think He made us? It was to glorify and testify about Him.

#8. But because John the Baptist said so in verse 33.

#9. Because His work shows that He is. That’s in verse 36.

#10. Because God the Father says He is.

John 5:37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. ….

11. Jesus is the Son of God because the Bible says He is.

Verse 39, this is Jesus speaking to a group of Jews that were causing Him some problems, “You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me.”

These past few weeks I have repeatedly encouraged you to read and study your Bible. But for some Bible reading and Bible Study become their god. These people know everything but apply nothing. I encourage you to diligently search to scriptures to reveal Christ in your life, so that others can see God in your daily behaviors. Your Bible study should set you free, not bind you tighter.

12. Jesus is the Son of God because Moses said He is.

John 5:46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.

Dt 18:17 The LORD said to Moses: “What they say is good.

Dt 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.

Dt 18:19 If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account. Do you remember I told you about the Judgment seat of Christ? That’s a good place to be. But there is another Judgment, the “Great White Throne Judgment” and that’s a bad place to be. We want to be judged by Jesus, not by God. Those who know Christ will be judged by Christ and those who don’t will be Judged by God. I don’t know about you but I’ll take my chances with Christ. He understands the troubles and problems we deal with daily.
