Daniel 6:1-28
Living in the Lion’s Den
Daniel had survived many changes in the politics and policies of Babylon. Taken from his homeland of Israel, Daniel had lived through the reigns of Nebuchadnezzar, Evil-Merodach, Nergal-sharezer, Labashi-Marduk, Nabonidus, and Belshazzar. Now Cyrus, King of the Medo-Persian Empire had elevated Darius the Mede to govern the affairs of the newly conquered people.
The Positions established 6:1-3
It is here that we find Daniel promoted to one of three governors position. He and two others were placed over the 127 provinces in the land. After he was found faithful in his duties, Daniel was in the prime position of being named the executive governor by Darius.
The Plot devised 6:4-9
Envy is a dangerous and debilitating emotion to harbor in our hearts. It can cause one to make serious errors in judgment concerning others. The officials conspiring in this incident found Daniels character impeccable. There were no skeletons in his closet. So, these schemers presented an innocuous proposal to Darius establishing the first annual “god of the month” statute.
The Prayers offered 6:10-11
Daniel witnessed the signing of the document and proceeded to carry on with his daily routines. He opened his windows and prayed toward his homeland. His loyalty to God would not be over-ruled by man. His accusers sought him out and brought him before Darius.
The Pretense exposed 6:12-17
The first item on their agenda was to reinforce through Darius the edict he had established that could not be changed or revoked. After agreeing with them concerning the decree, they produced Daniel as Exhibit A of one who had violated the law. Darius was displeased with himself that he had been defrauded in establishing this pronouncement. But he had no option but to carry out the edict.
The Punishment dispensed 6:18-23
After making an attempt to discover a way to circumvent the law, Darius was faced with the prospect of sending his friend to the lion’s den. He suffered a sleep deprived night. Music, food and company were no consolation to him. He only hoped that the God of Daniel would be able to deliver him. Meanwhile, while Darius suffered from insomnia, Daniel read between the lions and slept like a baby. God is faithful!
The Persecutors destroyed 6:24
The scripture is short and to the point concerning Daniel’s accusers. They met the same fate they wished on Daniel. Psalm 7:15 states, “He who digs a hole and scoops it out falls into the pit he has made.” Be careful about seeking the destruction and ruin of someone you are envious of.
The Proclamation delivered 6:25-28
As Nebuchadnezzar proclaimed the majesty and sovereignty of God, Darius also proclaims the glory of the Lord. He witnessed one of the greatest events in the Old Testament. Our Lord Jesus faced the lions, entered the tomb and came out victorious. Daniel was a man of God in the will of God and was immortal until his work on earth was done.
