Summary: Fuel up with the Spirit

Title: Fuel up with the Holy Spirit

Text: Ephesians 5:15-20

“Be very careful, then, how you live- not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

1.MY WISH LIST

I’m making the most of every opportunity

 I’m understanding what the Lord’s will is

 I’m free from the control of any addictive behavior

 I’m filled with the Spirit

 I’m speaking to others with psalms, hymns and spiritual

songs

 I’m singing and making music in my heart to the Lord

I’m always giving thanks to God the Father for everything

2. MY REALITY

“Billy Graham has said that, according to his research, at least 90 percent of all Christians in America are living defeated lives.”

3. MY ANSWER

I need to be filled up with the Spirit!

“Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”

A. WHO HAS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

1. EVERY BELIEVER HAS THE HOLY SPIRIT LIVING IN THEM.

“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.”

Eph. 1:13-14

2. BUT NOT EVERY BELIEVER IS FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT

The command "Instead be filled with the Spirit" (Eph. 5:18) is in the present continuous tense.

•The Disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit on different occassions. (Acts 2:4; 4:31)

• Our reality tells us that we are not always filled with the Spirit

3. HOW DO WE GET FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT?

A. RECEIVE CHRIST AS OUR SAVIOR.

“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.”

Eph. 1:13-14

B. REPENT

“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.” Eph 5:18

Repent of...

•Pride

•Fear

•Indifference

C. REQUEST TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:11-13

D.RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT BY FAITH

“Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1

Conclusion: Might God want to fill us with the Holy Spirit now?
