THE KINDNESS OF GOD
2 SAMUEL 9
Text: 2 Samuel 9:3
Introduction:
There is nothing more amazing than the grace of God that brings salvation. Ephesians 2:8-9 An Old Testament picture of New Testament grace is Jonathan’s son,
Mephibosheth. He was Saul’s grandson. When Saul and Jonathan died, his nurse fled with him. He fell and became lame. 2 Samuel 4:4
1. HE WAS SEPARATED
A. As the Son of a former king, Mephibosheth’s life was not worth much (Vs. 8).
B. He was separated from the new king and the kingdom. He remained in hiding; for fear that the new king would want to destroy anyone who had a claim to the throne.
C. Today every sinner is separated from God and deserves God’s punishment. Isaiah 59:2, 64:6, Ezekiel 18:4, Romans 6:23.
2. HE WAS SOUGHT - VSS. 1-5
A. David, for the sake of Jonathan, sought to show kindness to one of Jonathan’s descendants.
B. David sought out Mephibosheth.
C. God seeks out sinners to show kindness to them.
D. He sent his Son to die for sinners. John 3:16, 10:11, Isaiah 53:4-6
E. He sends the Holy Spirit to convict sinners. John 16:8-11
F. He sends the church to share the Gospel. Mark 16:15
3. HE WAS SAVED - VSS. 6-13
A. Mephibosheth was saved from a miserable life and was given his inheritance.
B. He did nothing to earn it; it was granted to him freely.
C. All he had to do was accept David’s kindness.
D. We are saved from a miserable life and given an inheritance in Heaven when we accept God’s free gift of salvation.
E. The price for sin has been paid.
F. All we must do is accept God’s free gift. John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9
4. HE WAS GIVEN SONSHIP - VSS. 7, 13
A. David treated Mephibosheth as a son, allowing him to eat with the other sons at the King’s table.
The moment a person is saved, he or she becomes a son of God. John 1:12
