Summary: A sermon on Blessed are the Pure in Heart, focusing on guilt. (Taken from John Baker’s Book, Life’s Healing Choices on Choice #4)

Evening Sermon for 3/15/2009

Matthew 5: 8- Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Introduction:

Have you ever tried to outrun your past?

A convention of Arkansas State troopers was asked to submit the best excuse they’d ever heard for someone trying to get out of a speeding ticket. The winning entry was submitted by a trooper who clocked a semi-tractor truck speeding down the interstate. The trooper pulled in behind the truck and turned his lights on, but the truck kept going. The trooper got right up on his bumper, but the truck kept going. The trooper turned on his siren, but the truck went even faster. Finally, the truck ran out of gas and rolled to the side of the highway.

The trooper got out and walked up to the trucker’s window. The driver rolled down his window, and the trooper asked, “Did you see my lights?” “Yes sir, I did,” the trucker responded. “Did you see me following you right on your bumper?” The trucker answered, “Yes sir, I did.” “Did you hear my siren all those miles?” “Yes sir, I did,” the trucker answered. Finally, the trooper said, “Then why didn’t you pull over?”

“Well, to be honest, about 2 years ago my wife ran off with an Arkansas state trooper. I was afraid you were trying to bring her back!”

Wouldn’t it be nice to live our lives in such a way that we could be unafraid of our past catching up with us? Is that even possible?

WBTU:

A. Celebrate Recovery

B. We realize that we have sinned against God and that we have problems that we cannot overcome- Poor in spirit

C. We realize that we need Jesus Christ to overcome our problems and sins- Mourn

D. We have taken the step to salvation. We have let go and now we let God.

Good, it is all over with and we don’t have to do a thing. No, that is not quite the case. Skip down to Matthew 5:8, come to the others later- Also in connection with this is (Heb 12:14 NIV) Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.

E. Is it possible to have a pure heart? Of course.

F. Those who are truly pure in heart aren’t afraid of their pasts.

G. We need to come clean. The truth is that we all have regrets. We’ve all done things that we wish we could go back and change. We feel guilty, and we carry that guilt with us. We need to let go of our guilt.

H. A young man called in to one of those call in talk shows hosted by a psychologist and said, “I’m consume with guilt and don’t know what to do with it. How do I get rid of this guilt?” The answer offered by the talk show host was upsetting: “You can’t get rid of guilt. You just have to learn to live with it.

I. The Bible tells us how to get relief from our guilt.

Thesis: Tonight we are going to talk about guilt.

For instances:

I. What guilt does to us?

1. Guilt destroys our confidence

A. Guilt and confidence cannot exist in the same person. (Isa 32:17 NIV) The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever.

B. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, writer of the Sherlock Holmes novels, was quite a prankster. One day he played a prank on 5 of the most prominent men in England. He sent an anonymous note to each man, which simply said, “All is found out. Flee at once.” Within 24 hours, all 5 men had left the country.

C. Skeletons in our closets.

2. Guilt damages our relationships

A. We respond to people in harmful ways. We overreact or explode.

B. Some appease people unwisely. Parents indulging their children.

C. Cause us to avoid commitment. We won’t let people get close to us.

3. Guilt keeps us stuck in the past

A. It’s like driving a car by always looking in the rearview mirror. A rearview mirror is helpful, because it gives us perspective. Looking at our past gives us perspective, too, but if we look only at our past, we never get to see the present or look forward to the future. Some people focus on the past to the extent that their rearview mirror gets bigger than their windshield. With this kind of driving, forward progress is nearly impossible. In fact, a crash is likely.

B. Spiritual growth is the process of expanding that windshield and shrinking the rearview mirror so we can get on with the present.

C. Feeling guilty just makes our today miserable.

II. Coming clean or how do we move past our guilt?

1. Take a personal moral inventory.

A. Like cleaning out a closet. This can transform our lives.

B. (Psa 139:23 NIV) Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. (Psa 139:24 NIV) See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

C. Keep this inventory in writing. Why? Because writing forces us to be specific. “God I’ve blown it” is not specific enough.

D. My Name is Earl.

E. Now don’t just list the bad stuff but also list the good stuff.

2. Accept responsibility for our faults.

A. Accepting responsibility for our faults begins with 1 do and 3 don’ts.

1. Do be radically honest. Andy Johnson came into my office…

2. Don’t rationalize.

3. Don’t blame others. Special note: Those physically or sexually abused. Take responsibility for your actions resulting from that abuse but not the abuse itself.

4. Don’t deceive yourself. (1 John 1:8 NIV) If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

3. Ask God for forgiveness.

A. (1 John 1:9 NIV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

B. How do I ask God for His forgiveness?

1. Don’t beg

2. Don’t bargain

3. Don’t bribe.

4. Do believe.

C. (Isa 1:18 NIV) "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

C. (Psa 32:3 NIV) When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.(Psa 32:4 NIV) For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. (Psa 32:5 NIV) Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"-- and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

4. Admit faults to another person

A. (James 5:16 NIV) Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.

B. We are only as sick as our secrets. Revealing is the beginning of healing.

C. Freedom comes when we do this.

D. Who? What? When?

1) Who? Someone you trust. Mature enough not to be shocked. Someone who knows the Lord.

2) What? Find a place without interruptions. Be up front in saying that we need to share this. Be specific.

3) When? As soon as possible.

5. Accept God’s forgiveness and forgive yourself.

B. What happens? How does it work?

1) God forgives instantly.

2) God forgives freely. (Rom 3:23 NIV) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (Rom 3:24 NIV) and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

3) He forgives completely. (Rom 8:1 NIV) Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

B. We need to forgive ourselves.

1) The Lord forgives and forgets- (Heb 8:12 NIV) For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."

2) (Psa 103:12 NIV) as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

3) (Micah 7:19 NIV) you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.

What Sin? - Morgan Cryar (Love Over Gold)

Chorus:

What sin, what sin? Well that’s as far away as the east is from the west.

What sin, what sin? It was gone the very minute you confessed

Buried in the sea of forgetfulness.

The heaviest thing you’ll carry Is a load of guilt and shame.

You were never meant to bear them So let them go in Jesus name.

Our God is slow to anger Quick to forgive our sin

So let Him put them under the blood Don’t bring them up again.

Cause He’ll just say,

Chorus

If you feel like it, “Let it go, give it to Jesus, Let it go, the guilt you feel inside, there’s no need for you to feel defeated, when there’s nothing left for you to hide; for his blood destroyed the traces sin had left behind, walk on in his forgiveness, mercy granted one more time.
