Alive but Dead – Letter to the Church at Sardis
Scripture: Revelation 3:1-6
Introduction: The Spirit of God brings live and if a child of God does not live a spirit-lead life he/she may be living but dead spiritually. Only a spiritual revival can bring them back to life.
This morning I want to speak to you on letter to the church at Sardis.
Background of Sardis
In 500 BC Sardis was one of the richest and the powerful cities in the world. By the time John writes this their riches and power started to disintegrate. This effect spread to the church also and the church was slowly losing its former glory.
What is Jesus telling to this church?
You have good deeds and good reputation but you are dead.
Why was the church dead?
1. There was no movement of the Holy Spirit.
2. The people of the church were living in SIN.
Sin causes death. James 1:15
a. Sin causes death of Will.
b. Sin causes death of feelings.
c. Sin causes death of all loveliness.
God’s remedy for the Church at Sardis.
Watchfulness. Revelation 3:3
What do we watch for?
1. Wiles of the devil. 1 Peter 5:8
2. Temptation. Matthew 26:41
3. False teaching. Acts 20:29-31
4. Coming of the Lord. Matthew 24:42
