Happy Mother’s Day Mom! This message is dedicated to you! And Happy Mother’s Day Ma (in heaven)!  And Happy Mother’s Day to my “other” moms…Leti, Shirley, Sharon, Doris and Judy!

Cont. series…last week…our role as COACH never stops if done well…

Today…Mom = 600,000 children! Octomom got nothin’ on her! One of the GREATEST MOMS of all time! The mother of MOSES…

Her name? Yo-keh-bed = YO-YO-YO-YO-KEH-BED! = “Jehovah is glory!”

Turn to Exodus 2:1-10…(only 2nd book in Bible so even guys can find it!)

SHE DEFINITELY LIVED UP TO HER NAME…Jewish Traditon says about her…

- Greatest Jewish woman who ever lived! LOOK AT HER KIDS…

- 2ND ONLY TO JESUS…Moses was the GREATEST MAN THAT EVER LIVED!

- Moses brought the children of Israel out of Egypt!

- Moses received 10 COMMANDMENTS on Mount Sinai!

- Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible!

- Son Aaron was High Priest & father of lineage of High Priests!

- Daughter Miriam lead all the Jewish women in praise of God after the crossing of the Red Sea!

- Miriam was Prophetess in whose merits they had water during 40 years of wandering in the desert!

- Jochebed = Considered = MOTHER of Israel!

- Daughter of Levi, son of Jacob, son of Abraham

- 300 yrs earlier the children of Israel had migrated into Egypt because there was a famine in their land

- Initially, everything was fine

- Joseph was the prime minister there in Egypt, a Hebrew, and everything was great

- Jochebed born when just entered Egypt

- Suddenly, though, the Bible says, there arose a Pharaoh, a leader, a new administration, who had no concept of Joseph

- They made the Israelites their slaves!!! DEPLORABLE CONDITIONS!

- Brought up by her father & grandfather

- Married her nephew Amram, her father’s grandson

- She quickly becomes the Chief Jewish Nurse in all of Egypt!

- She = Lead Midwife!

- If slavery wasn’t bad enough…Pharaoh one day, sitting on his throne, looks around the countryside and he sees all of these Hebrew children, this giant Israelite baby boom

- He’s thinking, “Wait a minute. I’d better do something about this.”

- So, what does he do? He puts task masters over the Hebrews and he tries to tire them out and work them so much that they don’t even want to think about multiplying

- Pharaoh decrees the Hebrew midwives as they’re assisting the Israelites in birth, if it’s a boy baby, to take the boy baby and throw the baby into the Nile for crocodile food! 

- Hebrew midwives come back to Pharaoh and they say, “Pharaoh, these - - - - Hebrew women, they are so vigorous; they’re having children so quickly, we can’t get to them fast enough.”

- Pharaoh’s paranoid!

- He didn’t want these people to revolt against him.

- He didn’t want the Israelites to leave because the economy in Egypt would crash.

- Jochebed = great lover of Jewish children!

- Devoted life to helping Jewish moms & their newborns

- Daughter Miriam, little girl of 5 helped her

- Jochebed & Miriam worked day & night helping young Jewish moms

- Got clothes & baby food from richer Jews to give to poorer Jews

- Risked their lives for ALL the children!

- Brought REAL help!

- Angels of Mercy!

- God protected them!

- Mother of 600,000 cuz as MOM of Moses = worth all the people of Israel who came out of Egypt!

- All this! And she finds herself pregnant!

- Moses born when Miriam was 5 and Aaron was 3

Seen The Ten Commandments movie version, but here’s what really happened…

Exodus 2:1-10 (NASB)

1Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a daughter of Levi. 2The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was beautiful, she hid him for three months. 3But when she could hide him no longer, she got him a wicker basket and covered it over with tar and pitch Then she put the child into it and set it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. 4His sister stood at a distance to find out what would happen to him. 5The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to her. 6When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, "This is one of the Hebrews’ children." 7Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, "Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for you?" 8Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, "Go ahead." So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, "Take this child away and nurse him for me and I will give you your wages." So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. And she named him Moses, and said, "Because I drew him out of the water."

No names mentioned but…baby = Moses. Moses’ mom and dad were named Jochebed and Amram (am•räm’). We know this from Exodus 6:20 and Numbers 26:59.

Not a great time to have a child! No sonogram pictures! No child-birthing classes! No status updates on “tsä•faf’” (Hebrew for Twitter)!  No videos uploaded on “kole-ü•gäb’” (Hebrew for YouTube)!  No pictures on “af-safer” (Hebrew for FaceBook)!  No baby shower! None of it!

“2she saw that he was beautiful” Love that! Moses was so exceptionally “beautiful” his parents KNEW that God had a special plan for him.

Moms, who thinks their children are beautiful? And do you also realize that they are a gift from God? They’re beautiful! Each one is unique! God has a special plan for each one and He gives MOMS, and DADS, the responsibility to be used as instruments, to mold them into Godly adults!

Now not all babies are beautiful… Even the Nile crocodiles wouldn’t eat these babies! 

2she hid him for three months. Blows me away! How you gonna HIDE a baby, a BOY baby, for 3 months? In a little Hebrew shanty, with Egyptian soldiers going back and forth, the Nile River right there. GOD AT WORK!

Then, the Bible says, (you’re talking about a creative mom), she decides, “Well, something has to be done,” and she takes a HUGE step of faith!

v. 3. Jochebed knew what doing! Egyptian riverboats were made with these same reeds and waterproofed with the same tar and pitch. The reeds, which grew as tall as 16 feet, could be gathered in swampy areas along the Nile. She fashioned a basket, a little boat, a little ark, puts Moses in it, covers it, and places at the edge of the river, knowing that every afternoon the Pharaoh’s daughter would bathe there, with her giant entourage with her.

Today…these same type of baskets are called “MOSES” BASKETS!

No way she was going to destroy her child! Little she could do to change Pharaoh’s new law. Her only alternative was to hide Moses and later place him in a tiny basket on the river. The SAME crocodile-infested Nile River where probably hundreds of baby boys were tossed!

“Maybe, just maybe, one of the people would see the little wrap and have pity on Moses.” She prayed, she trusted God, and she also used her common sense. v. 4. She asked her daughter, Miriam, to hide in the distance to see what would happen to little baby Moses.

v. 5. Here’s Miriam! She’s watching and she sees Pharaoh’s daughter coming down, and sure enough, Pharaoh’s daughter sees the little boat. She gets a servant to bring it to her. v. 6. She opens the basket and she sees Baby Moses and has pity on him.

Women have pity on children, don’t they? Every time you bring a baby to a party or up here on the stage, all the women do this, “Aah!” That’s the maternal, God-given instinct. It’s great. And that’s what, if we could translate this Hebrew term “she had pity on him”, “Aah, isn’t he cute?” She also discerns quickly, “This is a Hebrew baby. I’m around all these Hebrew huts here.”

v. 7. Then Miriam, she leaps from behind the giant reeds. She runs over to Pharaoh’s daughter and she goes, “I can find a nurse to nurse the baby for you,” and sure enough, v. 8. Pharaoh’s daughter says, “Go ahead,” and she goes and gets her MOM, MOSES’ VERY OWN MOM!!! They rush back to the river and let’s re-read v. 9.

9Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, "Take this child away and nurse him for me and I will give you your wages." So Jochebed took her own baby and nursed him.

AS A MOM IN THAT HORRIBLE SITUATION CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE??? I’ll bet Jochebed’s about to faint right there in her sandals! WHAT WAS SHE THINKING? “and I will give you your wages.” ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? GUESS IT “PAYS” TO BE A FAITHFUL MOM!!!  Pharaoh’s daughter is paying Jochebed cash money to nurse her VERY OWN son!

v. 9. “nurse” = 5 YEARS!

Jochebed didn’t realize it then, but psychologists tell us that 90% of a child’s personality is formed by the time he or she is three years of age. What happened during that span of time? What happened during that little block there? What did Jochebed do? She built into Moses’ life a foundation of faith like the world has never seen!

You’re thinking, “Come on! A little kid? She built a foundation of faith in a child that young?!” Yes. Moms, take advantage of ANY time you have with your children to build the right stuff into their lives! She had a tough, tough life, but she knew she would only have this baby Moses for five years and she put the real stuff into him.

10The child grew (up to be Charleton Heston…JK), and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. And she named him Moses, and said, "Because I drew him out of the water."

Commentary: God used her courageous act to place her son, the Hebrew of God’s choice, in the house of Pharaoh! Clearly, Moses’ MOM had something else in mind beside child abandonment or exposure on that river, for each individual action denoted love and hope for deliverance.

Jochebed demonstrated 3 ABSOLUTES that made her a faithful mom. Moms, if you apply these in your mothering, and you will leave an eternal legacy in your children, because…

BIG IDEA: A faithful mom leaves an eternal legacy!

How do you do this Mom? You…

1. Mature in your faith! Turn to Deuteronomy 6:1>

Jochebed had a maturing faith. How do we know that? Look at the life of Moses. Look at the FRUIT of the life of her son! Look at these words he penned later in his leadership of the nation of Israel. Been wandering in the dessert. Before crossing the Jordan River. Before entering the Promised Land. He’s giving the GREAT COMMANDS, including the GREATEST COMMANDMENT of all!

Deuteronomy 6:1-13 (NASB)

1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you. 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. 10 When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, 12 be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 13 Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name.

Moses is talking here about a lifestyle! A lifestyle of faith! A lifestyle of passing on your faith from generation to generation! The commands weren’t just for them at the time, but for our children and our children’s children, and our children’s children’s children. Moses GOT THIS at a very young age under his Mom’s influence! She MATURED in her faith!

I grew up in a lifestyle of faith, in a Christian home …shared before but…

Saved @ 7 at Child Evangelism Good News Club in park by my Cub Scout Den Mother - Brothers got saved next days - Went to church with Cobbs - Bugged mom & dad to take us - Prayed my dad would get Sundays off - Jim closed Better Buy on Sundays - Mom & dad took us - They went forward and got saved - All 5 baptized together - Church and our church family became our life - Dad was a Deacon and helped LEAD the church and taught adult Sunday School (still does to this day) - Mom began teaching us in Junior Church on Sundays and Whirlybirds and Jet Cadets on Wednesday nights and Vacation Bible School in the Summers, etc. - At 12, I began teaching children - As teenager, became a Junior Deacon - Never forced me to read the Bible! - Never forced me to pray! - Always brought me to church! - MY MOM IS A GREAT WOMAN OF GOD CUZ SHE MATURES IN HER FAITH! MY DAD IS A GREAT MAN OF GOD CUZ HE MATURES IN HIS FAITH!

MOMS…MATURE IN YOUR FAITH…like Jochebed did!

How do you do that? It’s SIMPLE! It’s summed up in 3 words around here at Rock Point….KNOW, GROW & GO! Connect with God and with each other!

Do you KNOW God personally!

Having a Quiet Time?

Reading & Studying Your Bible?

Spending time Meditating on God’s Word?

Spending time in Prayer?

Worshipping God, both personally and corporately?

Are you GROWing in Biblical Community!

You in a Home Group?

Connecting with other women in your group?

Are you Going and living generously!

Serving with your time?

Leading with your talent?

Giving of your treasure?

Sharing your testimony?

Are YOU KNOWing, GROWing and Going?

That’s how YOU, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, MATURE IN YOUR FAITH!

I’m sure Jochebed, as she was rearing Moses, and I’m reading between the lines a little bit, was a woman, a mom, who was KNOWING, GROWING and GOING! Even there in Egypt, as a slave, in the most deplorable of conditions, you can be sure she was spending time with God and living life together with God’s people and she was most definitely GENEROUS in taking care of all the moms and children!

Ladies…Moms…you give out so much, especially to your children, but you’ve got to have time where you take in as well!

Are you maturing in your faith? Are you passing on to your children a growing, maturing, developing FAITH IN GOD? Do you even have a faith TO give?

A faithful mom leaves an eternal legacy by maturing in her faith!

2. Model your faith!

Jochebed…first years of Moses’ life…MODELED her faith!

How many in here have ever been to a fashion show before? Who watches the TV SHOWS: America’s Next Top Model (Dena loves it!), Project Runway, Make Me A Super Model?

Moms…may not have thought of yourselves as MODELS, but you are always modeling! You may not be Naomi Campbell or Heidi Klum, but you’re always modeling! In fact, you’re modeling 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year! YOU ARE ALWAYS ON THE RUNWAY!!! (Do runway walk!?!?)

Question is: what CLOTHING are you modeling? Jochebed modeled a garment called FAITH! What are YOU modeling, moms?

What kind of language are you modeling?

What kind of tone of voice are you modeling?

What kind of attitudes are you modeling?

What kind of love toward your husband are you modeling?

What kind of conflict resolution are you modeling?

Because, like at these big-time modeling shows, our children are snapping pictures, and they’re taking the pictures and they’re putting them in the permanent photo albums of their mind. And kids go back and forth through the photos, don’t they?

And the best training ground for modeling your faith is not here at church or even in your home group. No! It’s in the home, especially during those early years. BUT IT’S NEVER TOO LATE!

How do we know Moses’ Mom modeled her faith? Turn to Hebrews 11:23-28

Hebrews 11:23 (NASB) 23By faith Moses’ parents (pl. mom AND dad) hid him for three months after he was born, because they (pl. mom AND dad) saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.

See the first two words? It says “by faith”, circle those two words.

The king’s edict was for every male Hebrew child to be thrown into the Nile (Exod 1:22). Presumably, anyone who disobeyed would be severely punished. But Moses’ parents were people of FAITH! They TRUSTED Almighty God…rather than FEARING Pharaoh!

Parents, are YOU trusting that God will take care of your children? MODEL YOUR FAITH!

Someone’s gonna get mad when I say this….whatever we model around the home, our children will end up modeling it and wearing the same wardrobe one day! What we say, what Dena and I MODEL in our thought lives, the kind of things we watch, what really attracts us, one day, Jennifer, Bethany, Jaye, Jared and Randy Jr will be, AND ALREADY ARE, wearing the same garments that Dena and I have MODELED!

Jochebed modeled the garment of faith! Here’s the question. Moms, Dads, do you really concern yourself with what you’re going to wear? Your SPIRITUAL WARDROBE?

Some of you are thinking this, “Well, I want to MODEL a garment called faith,” but I don’t have one.” You’re trying to model something you don’t have. You’ve got to have a faith, a maturing, growing faith, to MODEL it! If that’s you, let’s pray right now…

STOP: SALVATION PRAYER RIGHT HERE!

?: Are YOU modeling the life that you want your children to lead? Is what you’re wearing on the runway really the kind of wardrobe you want your children to wear one day?

My mom (AND DAD) modeled FAITH to me from the time I was 7 years old…May not have known, but I had a "drug" problem when I was young…

I was "drug" to the family room to study the Bible and pray

I was “drug” to the dinner table every night

I was “drug” to church every Saturday night to clean the buildings

I was "drug" to church on Sunday morning

I was "drug" to church on Sunday night

I was "drug" to church on Wednesday night

I was "drug" to Sunday School every week

I was "drug" to Vacation Bible School every Summer

I was “drug” to every church picnic and kite flying contest

I was “drug” to every summer camp, winter camp and retreat

I was “drug” to Hospitals to visit the sick

I was “drug” to Nursing Homes to visit the elderly

I was “drug” to homes to visit the shut-ins

And I was also "drug" to my room and spanked when I disobeyed my parents.

LISTEN TO ME…Those "drugs" are still in my veins today; and they affect my behavior in every thing I do, say, and think. They are stronger than cocaine, crack or heroin. Maybe if more of our children had this "drug" problem, WE WOULDN’T HAVE TO HAVE A SERMON SERIES CALLED “RAISING IN ARIZONA!” AMEN? AMEN!

A faithful mom leaves an eternal legacy by maturing in her faith AND modeling her faith!

3. Mark your children with your faith!

Clarify…not talking about leaving marks ON your children…that’s a whole nother sermon! 

Not only did Jochebed MATURE in her faith and MODEL her faith, she also did the most strategic thing of all…she MARKED her children WITH her faith!.

How do we know? Again…look at Moses’ decisions later when he grew up….

Hebrews 11:24-28 (NASB)

24By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. 26He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. 27By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. 28By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.

Moses became one of Israel’s greatest leaders, a prophet and a lawgiver. No OT character ranked higher in popular Jewish estimation than Moses. He was the great lawgiver, and the law was central to Jewish life. He’s FAMOUS even in the secular world for THE TEN COMMANDMENTS and the PARTING OF THE RED SEA!

See here in Hebrews several examples of Moses’ INCREDIBLE FAITH…

Moses = 11 x Hebrews the HALL OF FAITH.

Earlier in 23 Began with the FAITH of his Mom and Dad.

24 Here Moses = 40 yr old MAN - been AWAY from his parents for 35 years living as an Egyptian and in FULL knowledge of what he was doing, he "refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter." Can you imagine? It wasn’t because Pharaoh’s Daughter was the Wicked Step Mother! He was next in line to be the next Pharaoh! The most powerful nation in the world at the time! He was living the high life and He gave it all up! How? He’d been marked with FAITH from birth!

Remember…when Moses was 5, his MOM had to make the long journey from her little SLAVERY shack all the way up to the Pharaoh’s Palace and she had to give Moses to Pharaoh’s daughter. Moms, can you even imagine? What kind of MOM could do THAT? A FAITHFUL MOM!

Wonder what her last words were to Moses? “Moses, be sure to make your bed. Clean your room. Moses, be sure to say ‘thank you’. Be sure to clean your plate.” Doubt it! Sure it was about Almighty God!

25 By FAITH, Moses chose what was ETERNAL, even if it meant slavery, over what was TEMPORAL. Once he saw where God’s call lay, it would have been sin for him to turn away from it and continue to align himself with the Egyptians. There would have been pleasures, although temporary, but they would have been enjoyed only at the expense of disobeying God. He chose to trust God, not fear Pharaoh, just his Mom had! He’d been MARKED with FAITH!

26 FAITH kept him from being deceived by the glitz and glamour of the Egyptian lifestyle. We don’t so much as know the name of the Pharaoh of his time, but the choices Moses made resulted in his influence still being felt TODAY! Moses had his eye on a much greater king than Pharaoh! He had his eyes on the King of Kings! Can you imagine his Mom’s response at his decision?

27 "He saw him who is invisible." Because he’d been marked with FAITH, Moses had very close relationship with God that sustained Moses through all the difficult days.

28 By FAITH, he continued the observance of the Passover.

God used both Moms to make Moses the man he was , but look at the difference between his Egyptiam Mom versus his Hebrew mom:

Moms, AND dads, are we marking OUR children with OUR faith? The question REALLY is NOT do you trust God with your children, it’s…

Can God trust YOU with HIS children?

The greatest thing I will ever do is not preach a sermon, it’s not grow a church, or for my wife, it’s not being a pastor’s wife or doing ministry, it is that we will have raised GODLY FAITHFUL ADULTS! That’s the greatest thing we can do this side of eternity! NOW, WE HAVEN’T DONE IT PERFECTLY, BUT YEA GOD! All five of our children KNOW God personally!

Randy Jr came home from IGNITE winter camp…no offense Dad…re-baptized by Pastor Josh…MARKED!

Moms, AND dads, that’s our calling! That’s our agenda! That’s our purpose! That’s our goal! To translate the Word of God into life! Every chance you get, MODEL for ‘em…MARK ‘em!

Will our kids be able to say like…

Abraham Lincoln: "All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother. I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all my life."

Andrew Jackson: "There never was a woman like her. She was gentle as a dove and brave as a lioness... The memory of my mother and her teachings were, after all, the only capital I had to start life with, and on that capital I have made my way."

Charles Haddon Spurgeon: "I cannot tell you how much I owe to the solemn word of my good mother."

Spanish Proverb: "An ounce of mother is worth a ton of priest."

A faithful mom leaves an eternal legacy by maturing in her faith AND modeling her faith AND marking her children with her faith!

MOMS! YOU MAY BE THE MOTHER OF THE NEXT MOSES!!!

My Mom Taught A Lot of Things, like:

• My Mom taught me ANATOMY - like, "If you don’t stop crossing your eyes, they’re going to freeze that way."

• My Mom taught me SPORTS PHYSIOLOGY - "When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don’t come running to me.

• My Mom taught me to MEET A CHALLENGE: "What were you thinking? Answer me when I talk to you...Don’t talk back to me!"

• My Mom taught me LOGIC: "Because I said so, that’s why!”

• My Mom taught me how to BECOME AN ADULT: "If you don’t eat your vegetables, you’ll never grow up."

• My Mom taught me about JUSTICE: "One day you’ll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you. Then you’ll see what it’s like."

• My Mom taught me RELIGION: "You better PRAY that’ll come out of the carpet."

• My Mom taught me about the FUTURE: "If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to knock you into the middle of next week!"

• My Mom taught me FORESIGHT: "Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you’re in an accident."

• My Mom taught me IRONY: "Keep crying and I’ll *give* you something to cry about."

• My Mom taught me about the science of OSMOSIS: "Shut your mouth and eat your dinner!"

• My Mom taught me about STAMINA: "You’ll sit there until you finish your vegetables."

• My Mom taught me about WEATHER: "It looks as if a tornado swept through your room."

• My Mom taught me THE CIRCLE OF LIFE: "I brought you into this world, and I can take you out of it.”

• But truthfully, I am only standing on this stage today, preaching the Word of God to you, serving in full time ministry, because of the legacy of my MOM AND DAD! They lived out their faith before me! They taught me to Love the LORD my God with all my heart and with all my soul and with all my strength. To this very day, they continue to MATURE in their faith, they MODEL it in front of me, and they continue to MARK me with it!

BIG IDEA: A faithful mom leaves an eternal legacy!

Be an M3om…faithfully Maturing, Modeling and Marking!

Let’s pray…
