Message Point: We must learn to be happy for others when God blesses them.

Focus Passage: I Samuel 18:6-30

Supplemental Passage: A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot. (Proverbs 14:30 ESV)

"You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor." (Exodus 20:17 NASB)

--for you shall not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God-- (Exodus 34:14 NASB)

Introduction: Biblical examples of jealousy/envy: Cain & Able, Joseph & his brothers, the chief priests who had Jesus crucified: For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. (Mark 15:10 NASB)

I. Jealousy Makes You Miserable

a. v8 – made Saul angry and paranoid

b. v15 – made Saul fearful

II. Jealousy Ruins Relationships

a. v 9 – looked at David with suspicion from then on

b. v 11 – made Saul try to hurt David

c. v 10 – pushed God away

III. Remedy for Jealousy

a. One pastor says that "Jealousy is when we resent God’s goodness in other’s lives and ignore God’s goodness in our own lives.”

b. Admit you struggle with it: “But if your heart is full of bitter jealousy and selfishness, don’t brag or lie to cover up the truth.” (James 3:14 CEV)

c. Have an Attitude of Gratitude: “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NASB)

Invitation: Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21 NASB)
