Matthew 16: 13-21 “Jesus” More than a Prophet

Jesus ask who do men say that I am the response is , Matthew 16:14 "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

1. Is Jesus really just a Prophet?

A. Jesus is the Prophet whom God sent

Deut 18: 15The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him.

B. The Prophet Isaiah speaks of the Prophet to come

Isaiah 52:7How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!"

C. Isaiah says the Prophet will be anointed with Holy Spirit

Isaiah421 "Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight;

I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations.

D. The Prophet will speak the Doctrine of God

," Jesus replied. 26"I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is reliable, and what I have heard from him I tell the world."

E. The Prophet will be a forth-teller as the other Prophets

. "Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?" 2. Peter believes Jesus is more than a Prophet

B. If Jesus could have remained a Prophet then No problem. Because Jesus is more than a prophet, then the answer to the question is life and death answer.

." 20Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ. 21From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

3. Jesus is the Prophet who does much more than a Prophet.

A. Jesus is the Prophet whom God Proclaimed.

Matthew 3:17And a voice from heaven said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I love; and with him I am well pleased."

B. Jesus is the Prophet who Positions himself for the People

Isaiah 11:10In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his place of rest will be glorious. (A pole with a banner was often placed on a hill as a signal for gathering troops (13:2) or for summoning the nations to bring Israel back home.)

C. He is the Prophet who Makes Provisions for the People

6"I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, 7to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.

D. He is the Prophet who Brings Pardon for the People

Zachariah says He is the Fountain

131"On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity

E. Isaiah says He is the Prophet who calls to a higher way

3A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORDA; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.B

F. Isaiah says He is the Prophet he calls Redeemer

20"The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins," declares the LORD.

G. Matthew says he is the Prophet who Saves

Matthew 1:21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,C because he will save his people from their sins."
