Luke 2: 1 – 52
No Other Name
1 And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. 6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14 “ Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them. 21 And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called JESUS, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. 22 Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the LORD”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said: 29 “ Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, According to Your word; 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation 31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, 32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel.” 33 And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against 35 (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” 36 Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; 37 and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem. 39 So when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. 40 And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him. 41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mothe did not know it; 44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” 49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Unique among all books ever written, the Bible accurately foretells specific events-in detail-many years, sometimes centuries, before they occur. Approximately 2500 prophecies appear in the pages of the Bible, about 2000 of which already have been fulfilled to the letter—no errors. (The remaining 500 or so reach into the future and may be seen unfolding as days go by.) Since the probability for any one of these prophecies having been fulfilled by chance averages less than one in ten (figured very conservatively) and since the prophecies are for the most part independent of one another, the odds for all these prophecies having been fulfilled by chance without error is less than one in 102000 (that is 1 with 2000 zeros written after it)!
The reason why prophecy is an indication of the divine authorship of the Scriptures, and hence a testimony to the trustworthiness of the Message of the Scriptures, is because of the minute probability of fulfillment.
Anyone can make predictions. Having those prophecies fulfilled is vastly different. In fact, the more statements made about the future, and the more the detail, then the less likely the precise fulfillment will be.
For example, what's the likelihood of a person predicting today the exact city in which the birth of a future leader would take place, well into the 21st century? This is indeed what the prophet Micah did 700 years before the Messiah. Further, what is the likelihood of predicting the precise manner of death that a new, unknown religious leader would experience, a thousand years from now - a manner of death presently unknown, and to remain unknown for hundreds of years? Yet, this is what David did in 1000 B.C.
Again, what is the likelihood of predicting the specific date of the appearance of some great future leader, hundreds of years in advance? This is what Daniel did, 530 years before Christ.
If one were to conceive 50 specific prophecies about a person in the future, whom one would never meet, just what's the likelihood that this person will fulfill all 50 of the predictions? How much less would this likelihood be if 25 of these predictions were about what other people would do to him, and were completely beyond his control?
For example, how does someone "arrange" to be born in a specific family? How does one "arrange" to be born in a specified city, in which their parents don't actually live? How does one "arrange" their own death - and specifically by crucifixion, with two others, and then "arrange" to have their executioners gamble for His clothing (John 16:19; Psalms 22:18)? How does one "arrange" to be betrayed in advance? How does one "arrange" to have the executioners carry out the regular practice of breaking the legs of the two victims on either side, but not the one on the middle cross? Finally, how does one "arrange" to be God? How does one escape from a grave and appear to people after having been killed?
Indeed, it may be possible for someone to fake one or two of the Messianic prophecies, but it would be impossible for any one person to arrange and fulfill all of these prophecies.
For example, concerning Micah 5:2, where it states the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem Ephrathah, some wonderful Christian mathematicians determined the average population of BETHLEHEM from the time of Micah to the present; then they divided it by the average population of the earth during the same period.
They concluded that the chance of one man being born in Bethlehem was one in 300,000, (or one in 2.8 x 10^5 - rounded),
After examining only eight different prophecies, they conservatively estimated that the chance of one man fulfilling all eight prophecies was one in 10^17.
To illustrate how large the number 10^17 IS (a figure with 17 zeros) take a look at this illustration :
If you mark one of ten tickets, and place all the tickets in a hat, and thoroughly stir them, and then ask a blindfolded man to draw one, his chance of getting the right ticket is one in ten. Suppose that we take 10^17 silver dollars and lay them on the face of Texas. They'll cover all of the state two feet deep. Now mark one of these silver dollars and stir the whole mass thoroughly, all over the state. Blindfold a man and tell him that he can travel as far as he wishes, but he must pick up one silver dollar and say that this is the right one. What chance would he have of getting the right one? Just the same chance that the prophets would've had of writing these eight prophecies and having them all come true in any one man, from their day to the present time, providing they wrote them in their own wisdom.
So, shall we take some time now and look at a great miracle, our God became a human being.

Now we are all familiar with the Christmas story, but have you ever considered the evil schemes of Satan. We know our God Is in control of all things. God uses these evil beings to do His bidding. They hope for evil results but our Holy God Is Perfect in getting the right things done. He sets things in prefect order.
You see Rome had gotten wind that a son of David one day would rise to power and reclaim the kingship. What would be more convenient than to get all the descendents of king David registered so they would know who to destroy? We will learn how the evil Herod under the rotten advice of Satan wanted every child under the age of 2 to be killed. You will note that his evil did not just pertain to Bethlehem but to all surrounding towns and villages. He wanted to kill the coming king.
I believe that the whole Bible needs to be accepted. That is every verse. I do not think that man can vote on what he agrees with or is against. The word of God says what it means and means what it says. So, why am I on this soap box? In the book of Revelation chapter 22 says this, “18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”
Okay, so why am I bringing up this fact? Look at verse 6 and 7 of Luke with me, what does it say?
6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Mary brought forth her ‘firstborn Son’. Okay, so now look with me at the Gospel of Mark chapter 6, “ 1 Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. 2 And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! 3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they were offended at Him.”
The Word of God says that our Lord Jesus Christ had brothers and sisters. Joseph did not touch Mary until she brought forth her ‘Firstborn Son’ – our Lord Jesus Christ. God did not forbid Joseph and Mary from intimacy the rest of their lives. Some denominations have changed the word of God to fit their beliefs instead of just believing what God has said. That is a no-no as Revelation chapter 22 points out.
Doesn’t the words ‘swaddling clothes’ have a nice Christmas ring to it. Do you know what ‘swaddling clothes’ are? – Rags. Our Precious Wonderful King was wrapped in rags because Mary and Joseph were poor. He was in a cave where animal droppings and smells emanated.
Do you also know what a manager is? This is a rock that was carved into to create a bowl. Here they either put water into or grain for the livestock. It isn’t this amazing craftsman intricate wood design with pretty hay dispersed.

The Gospel of Luke does not deal with the Wise Men for Luke’s goal is to present our Lord Jesus Christ in His humanity.
Now we all celebrate Christmas on December 25th which by the way is probably not His birthday. He Is more interested in the reason why He came to earth and that was to die for our sins on Passover.

Our Lord’s Name Is Joshua. The Greek translation of His Name Is ‘Jesus’. Now, picture with me the shepherds running around Bethlehem yelling out ‘Joshua’ is born. The citizens would shout out back to them, ‘so what there are many Joshua’s here in this town.’ Unless you are Spanish we tend to single out the name ‘Jesus’ and give Him the Honor due Him.
I wonder if people, who wanted to curse, said ‘Joshua Christ’ with anger. How do you think people around them would react or respond?
Now if you are from the East coast in the United States consider the state of New Jersey. It is about the size of Israel. Now, picture with me that you lived in Trenton, NJ and had a baby boy. You are required by law to take your newborn son with your wife to Vineland, NJ. Oh, by the way you have to walk there. How does that sound to you? Kind of wants you to swear off having kids, doesn’t it.
On the eight day it is the best time to circumcise an infant in order for proper clotting. Today, in hospitals they do it right away, but what you probably do not know is that they inject the infant boys with vitamin K which helps in the clotting process.

In the book of Deuteronomy our Lord had given us the way of legal proof. If you caught someone in a crime or wanted to prove that a business deal was legal you needed two witnesses. Look at what it says, “15 “One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established. 16 If a false witness rises against any man to testify against him of wrongdoing, 17 then both men in the controversy shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who serve in those days. 18 And the judges shall make careful inquiry, and indeed, if the witness is a false witness, who has testified falsely against his brother, 19 then you shall do to him as he thought to have done to his brother; so you shall put away the evil from among you. 20 And those who remain shall hear and fear, and hereafter they shall not again commit such evil among you. 21 Your eye shall not pity: life shall be for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.”
Our Great Holy Father was putting everything in its proper order. For He had placed this old guy and woman in the city of Jerusalem. When they both saw Mary, Joseph, and our Lord Jesus, our Wonderful Holy Spirit spoke to both of these godly individuals to let them know that the Messiah was there.

Mary and Joseph return home to Nazareth. We do not know of anything that happened with our Lord Jesus from an infant until as we read here 12. There are some writings that try to explain some of these years but I would not give them any credibility?
So, why do we see Him now in Jerusalem at the age of 12? Boys are recognized as being a man at the age of 13. Here He Is 12 yet He has more wisdom than all the great scholars who were at Jerusalem. Note these two verses;
40 And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Our Precious Holy Spirit continued to teach Him as He was growing up. As you can see by the age of 12 He filled with all knowledge and wisdom. After this incident our Lord remained and continued to grow in wisdom until the age of 30 where it became time to reveal to the world The Lord’s Annointed – The Messiah
