Focus Passage: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

I. The Myth of the so called “Prosperity Gospel”

a. Believe in God or Jesus and be healthy & wealthy

b. Believe in God or Jesus and never have to suffer

c. Believe in God or Jesus and be happy.

II. The Truth of the Bible

a. God never promised you to be healthy or wealthy

i. Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. (2 Corinthians 12:8-9)

b. God never promised you to never suffer

i. Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. (2 Timothy 3:12)

c. God never promised you that life would be a bed of roses

i. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:10)

d. God is most glorified in you when you are satisfied in Him in the midst of loss, not prosperity. – John Piper

III. The Truth of the Gospel

a. We all have sinned

b. The wages of sin is death

c. But God loves us and provided Jesus as a sacrifice for our sins. (grace)
