VI. TITLE:

Kinsman Redeemer: Comparison between Boaz and Ruth vs. CHRIST and the Church

VII. EXPLICATION:

A. Author: Unknown, probably Samuel

B. Period: Time of the judges

C. Subject: How a young Moabite woman's life was enriched.

D. Main Purpose: To show how a Gentile woman became one of the ancestors of CHRIST.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. CHRIST redeemed the Church - Boaz redeemed Ruth

"And with the land I have acquired Ruth"

1. acquire or purchase came from the Hebrew word: "qanah" meaning to procure especially by purchase, to recover, to redeem.

2. CHRIST redeemed, or ransomed us from the devil, acquiring or owning us especially by purchasing us paying us by His blood, while Boaz acquired Ruth by His name, properties, and reputation.

1 Peter 1:20 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but he has now revealed him to you in these last days.

1 Peter 1:18 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver.

Matthew 20:28 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Psalms 34:22 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But the Lord will redeem those who serve him. No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

Ruth 3:13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Stay here tonight, and in the morning I will talk to him. If he is willing to redeem you, very well. Let him marry you. But if he is not willing, then as surely as the Lord lives, I will redeem you myself! Now lie down here until morning.”

B. CHRIST married the Church - both Jews and Gentiles - Boaz married a Moabite

"And with the land I have acquired Ruth, the Moabite widow of Mahlon"

1. It is literally, spiritually and in all aspect, it's a marriage made in Heaven, for we will be wed to the LORD in Heaven.

Revelation 19:7-9 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Let us be glad and rejoice, and let us give honor to him. For the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb, and his bride has prepared herself.

She has been given the finest of pure white linen to wear.” For the fine linen represents the good deeds of God’s holy people.

And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.” And he added, “These are true words that come from God.”

Ephesians 5:25 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her

Ephesians 5:32 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one.

Isaiah 62:5 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Your children will commit themselves to you, O Jerusalem, just as a young man commits himself to his bride. Then God will rejoice over you as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride.

Isaiah 61:10 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God! For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness. I am like a bridegroom in his wedding suit or a bride with her jewels.

Matthew 9:15 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Jesus replied, “Do wedding guests mourn while celebrating with the groom? Of course not. But someday the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Matthew 25:6 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

“At midnight they were roused by the shout, ‘Look, the bridegroom is coming! Come out and meet him!’

C. CHRIST gave His Life to the Church - Boaz gave Ruth his properties.

"And with the land I have acquired Ruth, the Moabite widow of Mahlon, to be my wife."

1. CHRIST never can withold anything good for us, because He has already given us His life on the cross, He gave in love, so we can love Him back with our lives.

Hebrews 9:28 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

so also Christ died once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.

1 Peter 3:18 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.

Jude 1:21 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will bring you eternal life. In this way, you will keep yourselves safe in God’s love.

Revelation 20:4 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Then I saw thrones, and the people sitting on them had been given the authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony about Jesus and for proclaiming the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his statue, nor accepted his mark on their forehead or their hands. They all came to life again, and they reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

1 Peter 3:16-18 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ.

Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong!

Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.

John 10:10 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

John 17:3 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.

John 20:31 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.

Romans 5:15-21 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.

And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins.

For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.

Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone.

Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.

God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant.

So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

D. CHRIST gave His Name that is above every Name to us, the Church - Boaz gave Ruth his name

"And with the land I have acquired Ruth, the Moabite widow of Mahlon, to be my wife. This way she can have a son to carry on the family name"

1. As a CHRISTian, we bear CHRIST's name.

2. CHRIST gave us His Name to trust and hope for, we have no better guarantee aside from His Name. Even unbelievers do their "best" to slander or insult us, still we are more blessed because we carry the name of the LORD JESUS CHRIST, our Master, GOD, and Savior

1 John 3:23 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us.

Philippians 2:9-11 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names,

that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

John 20:31 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.

Acts 2:38 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins, turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ to show that you have received forgiveness for your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 1:2 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

I am writing to God’s church in Corinth, to you who have been called by God to be his own holy people. He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus, just as he did for all people everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.

1 Corinthians 6:11 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Peter 4:14 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

So be happy when you are insulted for being a Christian, for then the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you.

Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!”

Luke 1:69 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

He has sent us a mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David,

1 Timothy 3:15 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

so that if I am delayed, you will know how people must conduct themselves in the household of God. This is the church of the living God, which is the pillar and foundation of the truth.

1 Peter 4:17 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

For the time has come for judgment, and it must begin with God’s household. And if judgment begins with us, what terrible fate awaits those who have never obeyed God’s Good News?

F. CHRIST made us witnesses of others coming to His Family, the Church - Boaz made others and family members as witnesses.

"You are all witnesses today."

1. We are all witnesses if we bear the name of the LORD JESUS CHRIST, be one with Him today, accept Him as your LORD, MASTER, SAVIOR and GOD and live for Him.

1 Peter 5:1 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And now, a word to you who are elders in the churches. I, too, am an elder and a witness to the sufferings of Christ. And I, too, will share in his glory when he is revealed to the whole world. As a fellow elder, I appeal to you:

Acts 22:15 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

For you are to be his witness, telling everyone what you have seen and heard.

Acts 26:16 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Now get to your feet! For I have appeared to you to appoint you as my servant and witness. You are to tell the world what you have seen and what I will show you in the future.

Romans 1:9 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

God knows how often I pray for you. Day and night I bring you and your needs in prayer to God, whom I serve with all my heart by spreading the Good News about his Son.

2. We are all convicted by GOD's Words, GOD's Words stand as a witness to us. It's more than 3 verses.

Deuteronomy 17:6 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But never put a person to death on the testimony of only one witness. There must always be two or three witnesses.

G. CHRIST is eternity older than His Bride, the Church - Boaz is much older as a father to Ruth. (Ruth 3:10)

1. GOD, the Son is called the Ancient of Days, or the Ancient One, infinitely, eternally much, much older than His Bride, the Church.

Ruth 3:10 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

“The Lord bless you, my daughter!” Boaz exclaimed. “You are showing even more family loyalty now than you did before, for you have not gone after a younger man, whether rich or poor.

Daniel 7:22 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

until the Ancient One—the Most High—came and judged in favor of his holy people. Then the time arrived for the holy people to take over the kingdom.

I watched as thrones were put in place and the Ancient One sat down to judge. His clothing was as white as snow, his hair like purest wool. He sat on a fiery throne with wheels of blazing fire,
