I. EXORDIUM:

Are you like CHRIST?

II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:

Believers

III. OBJECTIVES:

To show in life of Phinehas, that CHRIST is already glorified, so like us, we need to glorify CHRIST in our lives.

IV. TEXT:

1 Chronicles 9:20 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Phinehas son of Eleazar had been in charge of the gatekeepers in earlier times, and the Lord had been with him.

V. THESIS:

Be like CHRIST, the Glorifier of GOD.

VI. TITLE:

Phinehas son of Eleazar

VII. EXPLICATION:

A. Author: uncertain

B. Time of writing: Probably written during or shortly after the Captivity.

C. Function: supplementary to 1&2 Samuel and 1&2 Kings.

D. Distinctive feature: deals almost exclusively with the history of Judah.

E. Central thought: Sovereignty of GOD

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. In charge of the gatekeepers

1. His physical reputation:

a. grandson of Aaron, son of Eleazar

Exodus 6:25 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Eleazar son of Aaron married one of the daughters of Putiel, and she gave birth to his son, Phinehas. These are the ancestors of the Levite families, listed according to their clans.

Numbers 25:7-9 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

When Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron the priest saw this, he jumped up and left the assembly. He took a spear

and rushed after the man into his tent. Phinehas thrust the spear all the way through the man’s body and into the woman’s stomach. So the plague against the Israelites was stopped,

but not before 24,000 people had died.

When GOD's people are crying out loud, Phinehas took action. There are times that you stop crying like a cry baby, be brokenness or in broken mode, most of the time, it's already within us, given by the HOLY SPIRIT to do what needs to be done.

b. a victorious warrior of the LORD - his weapons are spiritual - holy objects of the sanctuary and trumpets

Numbers 31:6 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Then Moses sent them out, 1,000 men from each tribe, and Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest led them into battle. They carried along the holy objects of the sanctuary and the trumpets for sounding the charge.

2 Corinthians 10:4 (New International Version)

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

Our weapons are not like the weapons of this world. We carry in our bodies, the HOLY SPIRIT, and we have the WORD OF GOD in our minds, hearts, and soul.

B. The LORD was with Phinehas

1. a great spiritual leader

Joshua 22:13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

First, however, they sent a delegation led by Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, to talk with the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

Judges 20:28 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

and Phinehas son of Eleazar and grandson of Aaron was the priest.) The Israelites asked the Lord, “Should we fight against our relatives from Benjamin again, or should we stop?” The Lord said, “Go! Tomorrow I will hand them over to you.”

2. A type of CHRIST

a. Made atonement for Israel

Psalms 106:30-31 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But Phinehas had the courage to intervene, and the plague was stopped.

So he has been regarded as a righteous man ever since that time.

Since he's a grandson of Aaron, then he's in line for the high priesthood of GOD. His job is a spiritual job, to make atonement for GOD's people. He stopped the plague, in essence defeated death on the Israelite's behalf, like our LORD JESUS CHRIST who made atonement for us with His blood, and defeated death on our behalf. But unlike CHRIST, Phinehas came out with a spear but our LORD JESUS CHRIST came out in love to save us not to judge us.

b. his priesthood is permanent like CHRIST.

1 Chronicles 6:49 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Only Aaron and his descendants served as priests. They presented the offerings on the altar of burnt offering and the altar of incense, and they performed all the other duties related to the Most Holy Place. They made atonement for Israel by doing everything that Moses, the servant of God, had commanded them. Like CHRIST, Phinehas' priesthood gives him permanent right, like CHRIST his priesthood is in the order of Melchizedek not of the levites.

1 Chronicles 15:26 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And because God was clearly helping the Levites as they carried the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams.

Numbers 25:13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

In this covenant, I give him and his descendants a permanent right to the priesthood, for in his zeal for me, his God, he purified the people of Israel, making them right with me.”

Hebrews 5:6 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And in another passage God said to him, “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”

c. conquered death

Psalms 106:30-31 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But Phinehas had the courage to intervene, and the plague was stopped.

So he has been regarded as a righteous man ever since that time.

1 Corinthians 15:26 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

And the last enemy to be destroyed is death.

1 Corinthians 15:54-55 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory.

O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”

d. he rules with a covenant of peace

Numbers 25:12 (Amplified Bible)

Therefore say, Behold, I give to Phinehas the priest My covenant of peace.

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 (New Century Version)

All this is from God. Through Christ, God made peace between us and himself, and God gave us the work of telling everyone about the peace we can have with him.

God was in Christ, making peace between the world and himself. In Christ, God did not hold the world guilty of its sins. And he gave us this message of peace.

So we have been sent to speak for Christ. It is as if God is calling to you through us. We speak for Christ when we beg you to be at peace with God.

1 Chronicles 9:20 (Amplified Bible)

Phinehas son of Eleazar was ruler over them in times past, and the Lord was with him.

e. carries the reputation of his father

1 Chronicles 6:50 (Amplified Bible)

The sons of Aaron: Eleazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishua his son,

John 14:8-9 (Amplified Bible)

Philip said to Him, Lord, show us the Father [cause us to see the Father—that is all we ask]; then we shall be satisfied.

Jesus replied, Have I been with all of you for so long a time, and do you not recognize and know Me yet, Philip? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say then, Show us the Father?

f. stoop up to mediate

Psalms 106:30 (Amplified Bible)

Then stood up Phinehas [the priest] and executed judgment, and so the plague was stayed.

Galatians 3:20 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Now a mediator is helpful if more than one party must reach an agreement. But God, who is one, did not use a mediator when he gave his promise to Abraham.

1 Timothy 2:5 (New Revised Standard Version)

For there is one God; there is also one mediator between God and humankind, Christ Jesus, himself human,

Hebrews 8:6 (New Revised Standard Version)

But Jesus has now obtained a more excellent ministry, and to that degree he is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been enacted through better promises.

f. came with a spear to stop sin, while CHRIST came in love to destroy sin.

Numbers 25:8-9 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

and rushed after the man into his tent. Phinehas thrust the spear all the way through the man’s body and into the woman’s stomach. So the plague against the Israelites was stopped,

but not before 24,000 people had died.

Romans 5:8 (New Century Version)

But God shows his great love for us in this way: Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

g. he came to intervene

Psalms 106:30 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

But Phinehas had the courage to intervene, and the plague was stopped.

Colossians 1:20 (Amplified Bible)

And God purposed that through (by the service, the intervention of) Him [the Son] all things should be completely reconciled back to Himself, whether on earth or in heaven, as through Him, [the Father] made peace by means of the blood of His cross.

h. a chief over gatekeepers, while CHRIST is the Chief Shepherd

1 Chronicles 9:20 (New Revised Standard Version)

And Phinehas son of Eleazar was chief over them in former times; the Lord was with him.

Ephesians 2:20 (Amplified Bible)

You are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus Himself the chief Cornerstone.

1 Peter 5:4 (New Century Version)

Then when Christ, the Chief Shepherd, comes, you will get a glorious crown that will never lose its beauty.

IX. CONCLUSION:

In times past and in every time, GOD have already provided someone to intervene and save His people. It's all up to us to accept Him as a gift.

CHRIST is our High Priest, Priest, Offering, Sacrifice, Mediator, Savior, Atonement, the One who intervenes and much, much more.
