Proverbs 6:1-5 (New King James Version)

My son, if you become surety for your friend, If you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,

You are snared by the words of your mouth; You are taken by the words of your mouth.

So do this, my son, and deliver yourself; For you have come into the hand of your friend: Go and humble yourself; Plead with your friend.

Give no sleep to your eyes, Nor slumber to your eyelids.

Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, And like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Definition of Surety:

The word "surety" came from the Hebrew word:"arab" meaning to be security, to braid, give pledges, mortgage, undertake. Pledging of person for person is the earliest form of a surety, life for a life. (Genesis 43:9)

Genesis 43:9 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

I personally guarantee his safety. You may hold me responsible if I don’t bring him back to you. Then let me bear the blame forever.

Proverbs 11:15 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

There’s danger in putting up security for a stranger’s debt; it’s safer not to guarantee another person’s debt.

Proverbs 17:18 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

It’s poor judgment to guarantee another person’s debt or put up security for a friend.

Proverbs 22:26 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Don’t agree to guarantee another person’s debt or put up security for someone else.

Proverbs 20:16 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Get security from someone who guarantees a stranger’s debt. Get a deposit if he does it for foreigners.

Proverbs 27:13 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Get security from someone who guarantees a stranger’s debt. Get a deposit if he does it for foreigners.

B. Dangers of Surety:

1. You are snared by the words of your mouth.

"You are snared by the words of your mouth"

Snared from Greek word:"yaqosh" meaning ensnare by a fowler's snare.

It can be compared as in a wicked trapped by their own deeds because they are slave of sin, they can't help it. Being surety is you put yourself in a trap for someone else and no one can help you anymore once you're in it.

Psalms 9:16 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

The Lord is known for his justice. The wicked are trapped by their own deeds. Quiet Interlude

It can also be illustrated like the idols of gold and silver are a trap to those who takes and worships them. They are blinded to worship the creature rather than the Creator.

Deuteronomy 7:25 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

“You must burn their idols in fire, and you must not covet the silver or gold that covers them. You must not take it or it will become a trap to you, for it is detestable to the Lord your God.

2. You are taken by the words of your mouth

"You are taken by the words of your mouth"

Taken from the Hebrew word:"lakad" meaning to catch, to capture or occupy, to cohere. Your mouth that are meant to blessed you, have been there to capture or catch you.

It can be illustrated as when Moses spied out the Jazer area, they captured all the towns and drove out the Amorites. It's sure destruction for the Amorites since they lost their habitation to the Israelites. It's like a guarantee for you that you lost your own house to another.

Numbers 21:32 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

After Moses sent men to explore the Jazer area, they captured all the towns in the region and drove out the Amorites who lived there.

It's like the feeling of people captured by Joshua when their walls of refuge, the walls of Jericho have collapsed. You are like a house with broken down walls, and you have no security at all, because you have given them to someone else.

Joshua 6:20 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

When the people heard the sound of the rams’ horns, they shouted as loud as they could. Suddenly, the walls of Jericho collapsed, and the Israelites charged straight into the town and captured it.

3. You have come into the hand of your friend

"you have come into the hand of your friend"

The word "come" came from the Hebrew word:"bo" meaning to go or come.

It's like the wild animals and all birds of the sky were brought (bo) to Adam by GOD, the animals and birds have no other choice but to go to Adam. The come and go was controlled by someone else and definitely not you. However, wild are you like the animals or you might say I can escape like a bird, it's too late, you are now controlled by the hand of someone else.

Genesis 2:19 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one.

It's like GOD's Promise to the Israelites that whatever happens or how many battles they fought alongside Joshua still a promise of GOD is a promise of GOD, Joshua will bring (bo) them to the Promised Land. Again someone will bring you to come not yourselves.

Deuteronomy 31:23 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Then the Lord commissioned Joshua son of Nun with these words: “Be strong and courageous, for you must bring the people of Israel into the land I swore to give them. I will be with you.”

4. You're like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter.

"a gazelle from the hand of the hunter"

You're like an animals such as a gazelle or a roe, yeah, both beautiful but they are at the mercy of their hunter.

Remember Saul and Jonathan who both died in one battle, no matter how beautiful Israel was, pride and joy, but they have fallen in the hands of the Philistines. The word "beauty" is similar to the Hebrew word gazelle, beauty is useless if you have fallen.

2 Samuel 1:19 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Your pride and joy, O Israel, lies dead on the hills! Oh, how the mighty heroes have fallen!

Just like lucifer, no matter how beautiful and perfect he was, he was a fallen angel who turned into satan. Still he will go down the pit. The enemy wants some companions when he does go down to the pit and he wants our soul to go down with him. That can't be because we have a surety, that is the LORD JESUS CHRIST and the gates of hell can't prevail against Him.

Ezekiel 26:20 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

I will send you to the pit to join those who descended there long ago. Your city will lie in ruins, buried beneath the earth, like those in the pit who have entered the world of the dead. You will have no place of respect here in the land of the living.

5. You're like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

"like a bird from the hand of the fowler"

The word "bird" here means "little bird" or sparrow.

Genesis 15:10 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

So Abram presented all these to him and killed them. Then he cut each animal down the middle and laid the halves side by side; he did not, however, cut the birds in half.

The birds are cut in half with no obstruction or delay, they were not able to fight the hands of Abram when they are offered. If you enter as a surety or guarantee for a loan, you're like a bird in Abram's hands, your value was diminished to be like that of an offering of a poor widow. Your self-worth and your earnings are nothing until all loan is paid in full.

C. The LORD JESUS CHRIST is our surety.

Hebrews 7:22 (New King James Version)

by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.

The GOOD NEWS is any human being need not be a surety for someone else, because the LORD JESUS CHRIST is our surety of a better covenant, His Life for our life, the LORD JESUS CHRIST have been pledge from birth as our bondsman, so we can be free.

We no longer need to sing the song of the psalmist requesting GOD to be surety for us, since GOD, the FATHER, already taken the initiative from eternity past that the LORD JESUS CHRIST is our warranty, guarantee, surety since we will not experience death, because the LORD JESUS CHRIST will experience death for all of us.

Psalms 119:122 (New Living Translation, Second Edition)

Please guarantee a blessing for me. Don’t let the arrogant oppress me!

IX. CONCLUSION:

Never become a surety. For the LORD JESUS CHRIST is our Surety.

Hebrews 7:22 (New King James Version)

by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.
