Summary: The Law was a good thing, it had its place in God's plans, but no one (except Christ) could observe it in its entirety. We are no longer under the Law, thank God that He did the new thing that He promised to Isaiah and Jeremiah, and which was accomplished

Isaiah 43: 16-19

God promises to do a new thing

Each and every book in the Old Testament records time and time again

how God’s chosen people just could not keep God’s Law;

why;

for the same reason that any and every other tribe on the face of the earth could not,

because as it says in Jeremiah 17:9:

‘the (human) heart (that we all inherit from Adam and Eve)

is deceitful above all things, and beyond cure

(or at least human cure).

Many of us will remember South African Doctor Christian Barnard

and the announcement that he had performed the first heart transplant.

The man who received the donor heart was very happy

and lived a few more years than he would have done without it,

but he eventually died,

and even though I don’t know anything about him,

I am sure that no matter how well the heart’s donor lived

and how morally upstanding the recipient lived,

neither of them would be morally perfect or live sin-free lives.

God gave the Law to help people to know and understand His moral purity

and to know how to live lives pleasing to Him

but as Almighty God is omnipotent

He obviously knew that no human being, apart from His Son through Mary

would ever be able to keep it in its entirety.

So God’s ‘old thing’ in this context was the Mosaic Law,

the Ten Commandments and all the rules on animal sacrifices,

priestly rituals and festivals, hundreds of do’s and don’t’s.

The new covenant that God announced to Isaiah

would be new in extent or coverage

in that it went beyond Israel and Judah to include all the Gentile nations,

even thank God, us gathered here today.

The new covenant would be new in application

because it would be, or should be, written on our hearts and minds,

not only on tablets of stone or on doorposts,

and the new covenant would offer a new way to forgiveness,

not through animal sacrifices and ritual actions,

what we call ‘works’, but through grace and faith,

belief, that the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross,

the Agnus Dei, the spotless Lamb of God, pure and holy,

was enough to placate God’s wrath about our sin.

My ESV Study Bible contains a note to the effect that: (quote)

‘The new covenant stands in contrast to the old covenant,

in that the new cannot be broken as the old one was.’

‘The guarantee that it will not be broken is the grace mediated by Christ through His death and resurrection.’

‘The new covenant is all Gospel, gift,

whereas ‘the nature of the covenant which God made with Israel

was Law and works,

although obviously saving faith in Yahweh WAS required by the Jews

who hoped to benefit from it.’

‘Under the old covenant, the Law of God was engraved on tablets of stone

and placed in the Most Holy Place,

whereas under the new covenant

God writes His Law on the hearts of His people,

making us living Temples, made of living stones.’

‘The old covenant Law of Moses required obedience from the heart

and mediated forgiveness and hope through sacrifices

such as grain offerings, and the blood of animals such as doves and bulls.’

‘With hindsight we can see that it was a ‘system of types and shadows’

involving significant elements which were foreshadows of Christ

and inviting trust in God through Him.’ (unquote)

What then is the function or purpose of the Old Covenant, the Law,

now that the New Covenant is in place?

Luther suggested 3 reasons:

Firstly, to warn us or restrain us from sinning

by threats and the dread of everlasting punishment.

In other words ignorance is no excuse;

we know what the consequences of our sin is.

As Paul put it in his Letter to the Romans 6:23: ‘for the wages of sin is death’.

Secondly, to be a mirror that we could look into

and see how we fall short of God’s moral requirements;

in other words to see how very low our nature has fallen;

which leads us to repent and come to God for forgiveness.

Thirdly to be our school master or guide, to teach us what God requires of us,

for God still wants us to worship only Him,

and not take His name in vain;

and He commands that we obey our parents,

and not murder or steal, or lie or commit adultery.

The old covenant employed a continuing cycle of sacrifices

which provided a constant reminder of the sins of Israel and Judah,

but under the new covenant

the once-and-for-all-time ‘satisfactio vicaria’

made by Jesus Christ on the cross

would be the perfect and ultimate sacrificial offering,

making any further sacrifices unnecessary and pointless.

The New Covenant is unlike the Old one

in that it is not based on Law and obedience,

but on grace and faith,

for God realised from the beginning

when Adam and Eve exercised their God-given free will and sinned,

that mankind just could not be obedient, at least for very long.

We can be good for some of the time,

even for much of the time if we try hard enough,

but no one could be good for all of the time,

except Jesus who was the only human being not to sin;

so God in His love provided a way out for people who could never please Him and satisfy His requirements under the Law;

salvation by faith,

salvation by grace,

salvation by claiming the merits of Jesus Christ on the cross

rather than our own works or achievements.

Thank God that as Paul again put it in Romans 8:1,

‘there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

because through Christ Jesus

the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.’

This is the essence of the New Covenant,

which Jeremiah as well as Isaiah prophesied the Messiah,

the Christ, would bring in,

and which he did on the cross at Calvary,

when Jesus Christ died not for his own sins,

but ours, and all those of who would repent and believe.

The challenge is this:

are you in Christ Jesus, saved by faith?

or are you trying to earn your salvation by observing the Law?

To paraphrase John 3:16:

‘For God so loved the world so much

that He gave His only-begotten Son, Jesus of Nazareth, born of Mary,

that whosoever believes in him,

that he is the Christ, the Son of the Living God,

would not perish in hell after they die physically,

but have eternal life in heaven before the resurrection

and on a renewed earth after the Day of Judgement.’

The term ‘whosoever believes in him’

does not mean we are no longer under any kind of moral law

and that we can do what we like

and still expect to have a place in God’s kingdom

and a resurrection body.

That is the sin or heresy of ‘antinomianism’,

but thank God that we are not in bondage to the rituals and rules contained in the Old Covenant or Mosaic Law that Jews are still under,

which is why we can eat pork or shellfish if we want to.

We do not have to make pilgrimages to Jerusalem,

observe feast days or the 7th day Sabbath,

pray 3 times every day and in the direction of Jerusalem,

and make sacrificial offerings at set times in the day.

We do not base our hope of salvation

on our trying to do all these things to the best of our ability,

but always without the cast-iron assurance

that the good that we are doing or the bad that we are not doing

will maybe earn us a place in heaven.

Thank God that through Jesus Christ,

who did everything necessary to fulfil the demands of the Law for us,

that we, who could never be righteous, never be holy,

who will always be sinners until the day we die,

are counted as righteous and reckoned as holy,

by a supremely righteous God, Who wants us to be His children.

Thank God for the Old Covenant

that makes people aware of their failings

but thank God that it does not leave people in their sin

but points them to their need of a Saviour,

who God has provided,

in the person of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world,

IF only the sinful world will accept Him.

Thank God for the New Covenant of grace

which is a much better covenant;

one that we should live in and appreciate every day,

and enjoy the benefits of for eternity.
